Tomie Lee Mayes was born March 8, 1925, and died on Friday, Oct. 31, 2003. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Chickasha, under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home. ========= © The Chickasha Express-Star 2 Nov 2003 Tomie Lee Mayes Funeral service for Tomie Lee Mayes, 78, of Chickasha, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 3, 2003, at the Central Assembly of God Church, 902 S. 9th. Tomie Lee Mayes was born March 8, 1925, in Coalgate, Oklahoma, and died October 31, 2003, in Chickasha. Mr. Mayes played on the banks of the Muddy Boggy River as a child. He and Emma Fay Henager were married November 28, 1952. She preceded him in death in 1999. Mr. Mayes worked as a truck driver, millworker, cook at old Bill's Bakery in Chickasha, and at the Chickasha Ice Dock. He was employed by the Chickasha Sanitation Department and was employed as a farm/ranch hand for 33 years by J. Harper Thomas. Mr. Mayes retired at the age of 68 and began building fences for local farmers and ranchers. He loved to fish, raise cattle, hunt and garden. After the passing of his wife, he was often seen with his new friend and companion in the bib of his overalls, Burritto, his little chihuahua. Mr. Mayes attended the Central Assembly of God Church. He was also preceded in death by: Parents: Moad and Viola McConnell; 1 sister: Norma Becker; Grandson: Robert Austin Self Survivors include: 4 sons: Mike Garen (Tomie Leon) Mayes and wife Linda of Agra, OK, Larry Leonard Mayes and wife Nelda of Agra, OK, Benjamin Mayes Sr. and wife Katrina of Verden, OK, Martin David Mayes and wife Stephanie of Chickasha; 4 daughters: Patricia Sims and husband David of Chickasha, Veda Morse and husband Tom of Chickasha, Rachel Robinson and husband Donald of Chickasha, Norma Self and husband Franklin of Cement, OK; 2 stepsisters: Tressie Townley of Blanchard, OK, Louise Robison of Harker Heights, TX; 1 stepbrother, Murel McConnell of Delhart, TX; 31 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren.
