She died Thursday, July 15, at home. Mrs. McKinney received her early formal education at Lincoln School in Chickasha. She joined First Baptist Church at an early age, where she attended regularly with her mother and continued through her adult life. At the age of 19, she married Robert McKinney on December 19, 1934. Most of her adult life, Mrs. McKinney was a stay-at-home mom, paying careful attention to rearing her nine children. As the children grew older, she would take them with her on various jobs on farms on the outskirts of Chickasha. Work outside the home became even more essential to help make ends meet, when during World War II, her husband sought more meaningful work in the shipyards in California. She also managed the raising and marketing of cows, hogs, and chickens on the home place. After their children graduated from high school and college and began careers of their own, Mrs. McKinney began pursuit of the career of her dreams. She worked for many years as an aide in nursing homes and later received training and certification as a medical assistant. As a medical assistant, she worked in hospitals and nursing homes until she retired to devote full-time to home care nursing her ailing husband of 63 years who passed away in September 1997. Two children, Evelyn and Raymond, preceded her in death. She is survived by seven children: Herman McKinney and Herbert McKinney of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Lafayette McKinney (Venora) and Sherell L. McKinney of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Margarette Crockett and Robert McKinney, Jr., of Los Angeles, California, Karen Ates (Clyde) of Chickasha, Oklahoma; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends. ========== The Chickasha Express-Star 23 July 2004 SAVANNAH McKINNEY Funeral services for Savannah McKinney, 89, of Chickasha, will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 24, at First Baptist Church, First and Dakota, in Chickasha.
