Miller Jr., 72, died Thursday, August 5, 2004. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church of San Marcos. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Monday in Cowboy Cemetery, east of Rochelle, near Brady. Arrangements are by Pennington Funeral Home. Dr. Miller was born in Chickasha, Okla., on Sept. 13, 1931, to Roy and Eva Miller. When Roy was 14 his family moved to Friona, where he graduated from Friona High School. He received a BS degree in animal husbandry from Texas Tech University in 1953. This is where he met the love of his life, Glenda Ruth Williams from Lohn. They were married at First Baptist Church of San Angelo on Dec. 15, 1954. Following graduation, he served in the Navy from 1953 to 1957. He was stationed up and down the East Coast from Florida to Norfolk, Va., and then was discharged while stationed in Albuquerque, N.M. From 1957 to 1966, he was on the experiment station staff as range management conservationist at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo. From CSU, he received an MS degree in range management in 1960 and a Ph.D. in botany and plant ecology in 1967. During this time the family was blessed by the births of their children, Dan, Darla, and Ben. The family moved to Chico, Calif., where he taught at Chico State University from 1966 to 1969. During his time there he developed the university's range management program. Then the family moved to Vernon in 1969, and he became the area range and brush control specialist for the Texas Extension Service. In 1974, he accepted the position of chairman of the agriculture department at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos. After 15 years as chairman, he stepped down to a full-time teaching position at the university. Dr. Miller retired from SWT in August 1996. He was an active member of the Texas Section of Range Management, having been a member in Texas, Colorado and California. Roy was a deacon and a steadfast member of First Baptist Church in San Marcos. For many years he taught and ministered to a co-ed Sunday school class. Survivors include his father and mother, Roy and Eva Miller of Friona; his wife; his children, Dan Miller and wife, Rhonda, of Wheelock, Darla Powell and husband, Ricky, of Wichita Falls and Ben Miller and wife, Tracy, of Middleburg, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Joshua Powell, Jared Miller, Sam Miller, Rachel Miller, Elizabeth Miller, Hannah Miller, Abigail Miler, Jessica Miller, and Jenny Miller; four sisters, Mary Lou Glass and husband, Dale, of McLean, Donna Mears and husband, Sam, of Friona, Linda Tims and husband, Clyde, of Sunray and Jan Miller of Los Alamos, N.M.; and many nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church of San Marcos Building Fund, P.O. Box 1745, San Marcos, TX 78667; or to CTMC Hospice Care, 1345 Thorpe Lane, San Marcos, TX 78666. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
