Ed was born in Bradley, Okla., on Aug. 8, 1912. After losing both parents by the age of 8, he and his three brothers were placed in a Catholic boarding school in Chickasha, Okla. During his teens, he and a friend hopped a freight train bound for California. He eventually landed in Moorpark, where his first job was as a ranch hand working on Peterson Ranch, which is now California Lutheran University. His desire to better himself led to a job at the then new Camarillo State Hospital. Ed retired in 1974 as an equipment operator. He enjoyed working with the patients, teaching them to be independent and productive. Much of his retirement time was spent helping his son with equipment maintenance and repair at California Landscape Products in Somis. Ed was a resident of Camarillo for 66 years and served his community in several capacities, including serving several terms as a member of the board of directors of the Camarillo-area water district. His hobbies included a love of the outdoors, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing the waters of the High Sierra. His favorite fishing spot was Eagle Lake, where he enjoyed many summers fishing with family and friends. After retirement, he and his wife traveled extensively, enjoying several trips to Alaska, Australia, New Zealand and China. Many motor-home trips throughout the United States rounded out their retirement years. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sadie Hudnall Maurer; son and his wife, Ron and Kathleen Maurer; and granddaughters, Julie McCardell and her husband, Scott, Rebecca Radwan and her husband, Tom, all of Camarillo. He was blessed with five wonderful great-grandchildren, who were an important part of his life: Morgan, Abigail and Madison McCardell, and Jessica and Jacob Radwan. Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 17, at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Grady County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/grady/grady.html
