Owens, 87, Cement, will be 10:00 am Wednesday, February 16, 2005 in the Fletcher Christian Church, Fletcher, Oklahoma with Bill Long, pastor, First United Methodist Church, Cement, Oklahoma, officiating. Mr. Owens died Saturday in Lawton Burial will be at 3:00 pm Wednesday in the Dodson Cemetery, Dodson, Texas under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home of Fletcher (formerly Robbins Funeral Home). Friends may view Mr. Owens at the Becker Cement Chapel, Cement, Oklahoma until 8:00 pm Tuesday. H.T. was born October 19, 1917, seven miles east of Rush Springs, Oklahoma, the youngest of 9 children of Henry Thomas Owens and Florence Virginia (Long) Owens. H.T. Grew up in Rush Springs, Oklahoma and the Dodson, Texas area. He graduated from Arnett (near Hollis) High School in 1937 where he excelled in basketball, track and as a tenor vocalist. After high school, he worked at a grocery store, continued working on the family farm and later worked as a pipe layer for Consolidated Gas Company. H.T. was a decorated WWII veteran who served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star with three bronze service stars, Good Conduct Medal and the EAME Service Ribbon. In 1942 he completed airplane mechanic training at Wichita Falls, Texas and Santa Monica, California. In 1943 he was assigned to the 9th Tow Target Squadron in Chicago. During late 1943 through 1945 he served in parts of Africa, Firenzuola, Italy and Sicily. Over the years he would proudly recall the A20 aircraft, affectionately nicknamed Toodles, on which he was Crew Chief. After returning from the war, H.T. resumed working for Consolidated Gas. On March 2, 1946, H.T. married Virginia Igo in Rush Springs. From this union three children were born. In 1963, H.T. began working for Western Farmers Electric Cooperative at the Mooreland power plant. After thirty years of service, he retired in 1993 as Supervisor of Pipeline Operations at the Anadarko plant. He loved gardening, reading his Bible and watching OU play basketball and football. H.T. will always be remembered for his loving, generous spirit and his dedication to his family, friends and co-workers. He was a Christian and truly demonstrated that in his everyday life. H.T. is survived by his wife, Virginia, of the home; a son and daughter- in-law: Henry and Debbie Owens, Anadarko; two daughters and a son-in-law: Jeane Blevins of Lawton and Dawne and Don Massey, Elgin; six grandchildren, Jason Blevins, Bella Vista, Arkansas; Kaleb, Joshua and Mathew Owens, Anadarko, and Aubrey and Andrew Massey, Elgin; two brothers and a sister-in-law: Charlie and Helen Owens, Sherman, Texas and Monroe Owens, Rush Springs. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Henry L. and Evan Owens and four sisters Etta May Owens, Oleta Owens, Ida Evans and Arietta White.
