He passed away Saturday, June 23, 2001, in Norfolk, Virginia, at the age of 48. Oliver was raised in Chickasha, Oklahoma, and graduated from Chickasha High School in 1971. In 1974 he received his undergraduate degree from Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts in music performance, with bass as his performing instrument. After earning a master's degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma, Oliver accumulated thirty years of "real world" experience working in various fields of audio and video production. In 1986, he became the director of audio and lighting for the United States Senate and was finally employed as the senior broadcast engineering technician for the United States Senate in Washington, D.C. He was married to Anita Louise Powers in Oklahoma on October 14, 1974, a union that lasted for twenty-eight years. The family moved to Silver Spring, Maryland, in 1985, to be involved with the planting of a church in the area. He remained an active member of Valley Brook Community Church until his passing. Oliver Bennett Powers is survived by his wife, Anita Louise Powers; his sons, Isaiah Lucas Powers and Micah Joel Powers, of Silver Spring, Maryland; his mother, Ella Belle Powers, of Chickasha, Oklahoma; his brother Roy William Powers II and sister-in-law Janelle, of Norman, Oklahoma; his brother Robert Leonard Powers and sister-in-law Kathy, of Laguna Niguel, California; and his aunts Mary Swineford and Yoshie Good, of Chickasha. The family requests that memorials be made to Valley Brook Community Church, designated for the Oliver Powers Memorial Fund. The fund will be donated to a charitable foundation yet to be determined for children with cerebral palsy. A memorial service for Oliver will be held in Chickasha on Saturday, July 21, 2001.
