Rhodes June W. Rhodes, 87, of Duncan and formerly of Friona, Texas, passed away Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at the Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City. Services in Duncan will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, in the Chisholm Trail Church of Christ with Leonard Keele officiating. A second service will be held in Friona, Texas, at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 at the sixth Street Church of Christ with Cecil Bunch officiating. Burial will be in the Friona Cemetery under the direction of Bailes-Polk Funeral Home of Duncan. Mrs. Rhodes was born June 18, 1915, in Rush Springs to J. A. and Iona Wigham. She graduated from Gotebo High School and attended Southwestern University at Weatherford, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in education. She later attended Eastern New Mexico University at Portales, N. M., earning her Master’s Degree in education. She married Aubrey Rhodes in April 4, 1941 in the Westside Church of Christ (now Chisholm Trail Church of Christ). Rhodes taught elementary school for more than 40 years, starting at Empire City. She was active in the Friona City Council, Panhandle Regional Planning Commission, American Heart Association, National Cancer Society and March of Dimes. After retiring and moving to Duncan, she volunteered with Duncan schools and was active the Chisholm Trail Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey; her parents; and a sister, Doris Cooper of Stillwater. Survivors include one son, Tim Rhodes and his wife Sharon of Duncan; one granddaughter, Michelle Welsh and her husband Chad of Snyder, Texas; a sister-in-law, Otha Watkins of Duncan; a brother-in-law, Woodrow Rhodes of Duncan; several nieces and nephews; and several grand-nieces and nephews. June moved to Duncan in 1995, from Friona. June was an educator to the very end. She taught school, primarily elementary, for over 40 years starting at Empire City, then moving to Bovina, Texas, and finally retiring in Friona. While teaching in the classroom she found time to serve on the Friona City Council for three terms, served on the board of the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission. She was also the county chairwoman for the American Heart Association, National Cancer Society and the March of Dimes. She was named Woman of the Year and Teacher of the Year by the Friona Chamber of Commerce. Still, with all of her involvement in the community and the region, she would put everything on hold for her kids. They were the most important part of her life. When she returned to Duncan, the first thing she asked was how can I help in the schools. She volunteered at several elementary schools and tutored in her home along with being involved in the local chapter of AARP. She was an active member of 6th Street Church of Christ in Friona and Chisholm Trail Church of Christ in Duncan. She was co-owner, along with her daughter-in-law and son, of The New Southern Trophy Mfg. Co. and Heartland Wrestling Supply of Duncan. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Doris Cooper of Stillwater. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Sharon Rhodes of Duncan; a granddaughter and her husband, Michelle and Chad Welsh of Snyder, Texas; a sister-in-law, Otha Watkins of Duncan; a brother-in-law, Woodrow Rhodes of Duncan; nieces, Carole Heck of Dallas, Texas, Nancy Apfel of Stillwater, Susie and Mark Grundy of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Dorothy and Fred Wilson of Amarillo, Texas, Gwen and Scotty Scott of Amarillo; nephews, Thomas and Virginia Rhodes of Amarillo, Terry Rhodes of Oklahoma City and Darrell Rhodes of Norman; several great-nieces and nephews; and a host of very good friends.
