All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Schow Jr., Dr. Carl Dr. Carl Schow, Jr., long-time resident of Galveston, passed away after a lengthy illness at the age of 84. C.E., as he was known by many friends and family, was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma on March 22, 1918 where he lived until moving to Clifton, Texas when he was a freshman in high school. He graduated from Clifton High School in 1937 and attended Clifton College for one semester before entering Baylor University in Waco as a pre-dental student in 1938. He also served as dental corpsman in the Navy for a short period. In 1940, Dr. Schow met Mary Jane Wilson while he was attending Baylor and Mary Jane was working as a nurse at Missouri Baptist Hospital. They were married December 29, 1943 in Dallas, Texas. At this time, Dr. Schow was attending St. Louis University School of Dentistry. Dr. and Mrs. Schow celebrated the birth of their first son Carl Emil, III in 1946. Their second son, John Charles, was born in 1947, and their third son, Olan Weldon, was born in 1950. In 1946, Dr. Schow earned his Doctor of Dental Science degree and received the Delta Sigma Delta Award for the highest scholastic average over four years. He was elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon, dentistry's scholastic honorary fraternity. After receiving his D.D.S. degree, Dr. Schow served his oral surgery at the University of Tennessee School of Dentistry in Memphis, and his residency at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine and University Hospital in Oklahoma City. In 1953, he became an instructor of oral surgery at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine Department of Surgery. Dr. Schow would distinguish himself in such a way as to eventually become an associate professor in the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine Division of Oral Surgery in 1958. He practiced oral surgery in Lawton, Oklahoma and was an attending oral surgery associate professor at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine from 1954-1969. It was there that he became the first full-time director of oral surgery. In 1969, Dr. Schow joined the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston as an associate professor and the first chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the Department of Surgery. He later became the first doctor of dentistry to attain the rank of professor of surgery at UTMB. Dr. Schow served under three UTMB presidents: Drs. Truman Blocker, William Levin and Thomas James. Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Schow served on the examining committee of the American Board and American Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons, was past president of the Oklahoma Oral Surgery Society and past president of the Southwest Society of Oral Surgeons (a six-state area). Dr. Schow was past president of South Central Dental Society of Oklahoma and Ninth District Dental Society of Texas, a five- year chairman of the committee of membership and examination for the Southwest Society of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons, and on the American Board of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Advisory Committee. Dr. Schow was a member of many professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the American College of Dentists, of which he was a fellow. He was a fellow of the International College of Dentists, and a member of the Singleton Surgical Society, Southwest Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the International Association of Oral Surgeons, and served on the Continuing Education Committee of the American Association of Hospital Dentists. Dr. Schow was honored as speaker for the 1974 Washington, D.C. and the 1978 Anaheim Convention Center Sessions of the American Dental Association's Annual Scientific Sessions. He was named Dentist of the Year in 1973 by the Ninth District Dental Association of Texas and was named to Who's Who Among Outstanding Texans in 1974. In 1979, he was appointed Special Consultant to the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. In 1999, Dr. Schow was recognized with an endowed chair in his name at UTMB. His successor and dear friend, Dr. Elgene Mainous, is the inaugural holder of that chair. Dr. Schow was a dedicated surgeon and professor. After his retirement from UTMB in 1989, he continued to meet with residents on a regular basis to offer his expert advice and to share his wealth of wonderful and entertaining stories. He was an active Baylor University alumnus and was a member of the UTMB President's Cabinet. Dr. Schow leaves a loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Mary Jane, his three sons, Carl Emil III, John Charles (Buddy), Olan and his wife Irene. He is also survived by his three precious grandchildren, Carl Emil, IV, Sara Jane and Victoria Anne (Annie) whom he cherished dearly. C.E. touched so many lives and will be sadly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be remembered for his caring ways, his strength, his courage and his dedication to his family and his profession. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2002 from 5:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at J. Levy & Bro. Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 23, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church, 1903 Church Street, Galveston, Texas, with Reverend William Zambon officiating. Interment will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2002 at 4:00 P.M. at Clifton Memorial Park Cemetery in Clifton, Texas. Pallbearers will be Dr. Elgene Mainous, Bill Rider, Frank Williamson, L.D. Edwards, Dr. Bill Glenn, Dr. Courtney Townsend, Roger Quiroga, Dr. Roger Throndson, James Hilton, and Carl E. Schow IV. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Frank Essex, Richard Peters, F.W. Tillman, Joe Lopez, Dr. Courtney Townsend, Dr. Jim Thompson, Dr. Tom James, Dudley Pederson, Dr. Frank Schmalstieg, Dr. Don McDonald and Dr. James Bauerle. In lieu of flowers, the Schow family requests that monetary gifts be donated to the Carl E. Schow Academic Scholarship at Baylor University, the UTMB Carl E. Schow, Jr. Endowed Chair in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, St. Louis University Dental School or Hospice. The Schow Family would like to take this opportunity to thank all friends, family and colleagues who have supported us throughout Dr. Schow's illness.
