Spoon, a retired custodian for Santa Rosa schools, died June 7 of cancer. He was 82. He was born in Chickasha, Okla., in 1919, and moved to Fresno with his family when he was young. In 1943 he went to Sebastopol to work for an apple dryer, where he met his wife, Frances. The two were soon married and moved back to Fresno before returning to make a life in Sonoma County in 1950. After holding several other jobs, Spoon became a custodian and for 23 years worked for Santa Rosa High, Santa Rosa Junior High and Lewis Elementary schools. Spoon was active in the Westside Church of Christ, where he served as a church elder, taught Sunday school classes and was a song leader. He also was an avid fisherman. "He would always catch fish when nobody else would get them," Frances Spoon said. His good luck helped him catch one of the biggest catfish pulled out of Clear Lake, his favorite fishing spot. The fish was so big that park rangers took a photo of it and hung it on the wall. In recent years, Spoon dedicated himself to caring for his wife, who is blind. One of the responsibilities he assumed was cooking, and he developed into an exceptional cook, Frances Spoon said. "Everything he made was delicious," his wife said. "At church potlucks the ladies would all gather around him and ask for his recipes." Last year, traveling around the country with his newly retired son, Spoon realized a lifelong dream of seeing the Grand Ole Opry, the legendary country music concert hall in Nashville, Tenn. "We got to see a lot of places he never really thought he'd ever see," said his son, Kenneth Spoon of Rohnert Park. In addition to his wife and son, Spoon is survived by another son, James Spoon of Santa Rosa; eight grandchildren; and seven great- grandchildren. Funeral services were Tuesday. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Grady County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/grady/grady.html
