Buryl Walter Southerland on April 26, 1933, and died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, in Oklahoma City. ==================== Chickasha Express-Star 18 September 2000 Buryl W. Southerland Funeral service for Buryl W. Southerland, age 67, of Alex, Oklahoma, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2000, in the Alex Southern Baptis t Chapel. Rev. Cody Devers, pastor, will officiate. Walter Buryl Southerland was born on April 26, 1933, the oldest of four children to Alma Fay Carico and Masil Lee (Sully) Southerland, in the small community of Vaughn, near the town of Alex, Oklahoma. He died on Wednesday, September 13, 2000, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Buryl graduated from Lawton High School in 1952, where he played on the football team. After graduation, he served in the United States Army. In 1953, he married Marcille Burns of Lawton, Oklahoma. After his stint in the Army, they resumed to Lawton where he worked as a cook for Wayne’s Drive-In for seventeen years. Having great artistic ability he left the food profession and pursued his talents in painting and metal sculpting. Buryl was the owner of “Sculpture Fantasies” and traveled the United States selling his art work. He opened Lawton’s first art gallery in the late 60’s. In 1984, Buryl married Stephanie Galimberto. They settled in Alex, where he continued his business. Buryl attended the Alex Southern Baptist Chapel. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Laney Southerland in 1994, his father, Masil Southerland in 1993, his sister, Sharon Vanover in 1999, and his mother, Alma Fay Fine in April of this year. Survivors include his wife, Stephanie of the home; one daughter, Scherrie Ann Michelle (Mikki) Southerland of the home; five sons, Paul Blake Southerland, a photographer with the Daily Oklahoman and his wife, Becky, of Oklahoma City, Steve Southerland, also an artist, and family of Lawton, Royce Earl Southerland of Minnesota, Bruce Trimble and wife, Leanna of Virginia, and Donnie Smith of Lawton; step-mother, Billie Hurt Southerland of Oklahoma City; six brothers, Kent Southerland and his wife, Jessie of Oklahoma City; Larry Southerland and his wife, Carla of Oklahoma City, Jarrel Southerland of Oklahoma City, Gary Southerland and his wife, Cheryal of Edmond, Patrick Southerland of Duncan, and Michael Southerland of Oklahoma City; grandchildren, Dawson Wayne of the home, Joshua and Bradley Southerland of Oklahoma City, Chase Southerland of Lawton, Morgan Southerland of Newcastle, Robert and Chris Trimble of Virginia, Amber Smith of Virginia, Valariee Southerland of Medicine Park, John, Heather, and Marci Southerland of Chickasha; several nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as friends all over the United States in the Artistic Community. Buryl was a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all. He loved cooking, being outside in his flower garden and with his rooster and kittens. There will definitely be an empty spot in our hearts for Buryl. He will be greatly missed. Interment will be in the Alex Cemetery. Service will be under the direction of the McRay Funeral Home.
