Served in the A. E. F. in France and saw service in the Argonne campaign. He was of a sunny disposition and easily won the confidence of his acquaintances. At the time of his death, was a clerk in a grocery store at this place. His mind having without doubt become demented, he chose the course that not only took his own life but that of the woman whom he declared he loved so well he could not give up. Tuesday afternoon of last week he shot and killed his former wife and then turned the gun on himself and sent a bullet through his heart. His body was shipped to his former home Monday of this week for burial. He leaves a brokenhearted mother, brother and sister to mourn his departure. ========== Dear friends of Verden: I think it's right that I should write a letter in regards to Naomi and Calvin's marriage as he has written a letter. When he came to see her xmas she had no thought of marrying at that time but wanted to wait until he got released from the army. Before coming up here he had tried to make his insurance to her but couldn't unless they were married and that was his plea to get her to marry before he got out of the army. He said he didn't want this made to anyone except to her since he had nothing to do with his mother, brother, nor sister. He never would let Naomi know any of their addresses so she could write to them. They hadn't known where he was since he left them in 1916, until he came by there from France. Naomi wrote and told him to be sure and come by and see his mother. Naomi learned while he was in France that he had another wife. A Broken Hearted Mother ========== By request we publish the following copy taken from the court record: I, W. Irwin Hunter hereby certify that on the 28th day of May, 1914, at Greensburg, Pa. that Calvin Jacob Soles and Clara Beaula McDonnell by me were united in marriage in accordance with license issued by the Clerk of the Orphan's Court, of Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, numbered 368008.
