He died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, in Chickasha. ========== The Chickasha Express-Star 5 September 2002 KIRBY K. SMITH Funeral services for Kirby K. Smith, 78, of Chickasha, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 7, 2002, in the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kim Hayes officiating. Kirby K. Smith was born November 7, 1923, in Stecker, Oklahoma, the son of William Smith and Edna Coffman Smith. He died Tuesday, September 3, 2002, in Chickasha. Kirby grew up in Stecker, where he attended elementary school. He graduated from Broxton High School. He later attended business school in Okmulgee. Kirby came to the Chickasha area in 1956. He married Wilma Nadine Massengale in October 1956 in El Paso, TX. Kirby served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He had been employed at Tinker Air Force Base for eighteen years before retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Shriners and was a 32nd Degree Mason. Kirby was preceded in death by both parents, one son, Joseph Aron Massengale, and one sister, Katheryn Williams. Survivors include his wife, Wilma Nadine of the home; five sons, Jim Sontany and wife Chris, of Alex; Steve Massengale and wife Becky, of Duncanville, TX; Mike and wife Judy Massengale, of Arlington, TX; Bob Massengale, of Stecker, OK; and Bill Smith, of Chickasha; one brother, Cecil and wife Sheila Smith, of Houma, LA; as well as nineteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Interment will be in the Apache Cemetery in Apache, Oklahoma, under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
