L. SMITH RITES HELD MONDAY AFTERNOON Funeral services for J. L. Smith were held Monday afternoon at 5 o'clock in the Baptist church with Rev. Leach officiating. Mr. Smith was killed Friday at noon by a mule which he was unharnessing. Verden lost an outstanding citizen, a man who held the trust and confidence of all who knew him. He was a kind loving father. He was a member of the Baptist church, of the Masonic and Eastern Star Lodges. He was an active member, always interested in doing things for his community and fellow man. The large funeral attendance and the vast floral offering was a symbol representing his many friends. The Masons held the opening service at the funeral followed by selections "Rock of Ages," "Sweet Bye and Bye" and "God Be With You" sang by the Fait Brothers Quartet of Anadarko. Casket bearers were A. S. McVey, G. C. McVey, E. W. Peters, C. W. Hamill, R. D. Taylor and J. C. Barnett. J. L. Smith was born April 12, 1874 at August, Arkansas and later moved to Weatherford, Texas where he was united in marriage to Ida M. Slack December 19, 1900. In 1910 Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved on a farm near Verden. He is survived by his wife, three sons, Lawrence of Oklahoma City, Earl of Chickasha, and Eldridge (Tod) of Summit City, Calif. and four daughters, Mrs. Mattie Clarice Kidd of Guthrie, Mrs. Estelle Folkestad of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. Margaret Swatek and Miss Helen Smith of Oklahoma City, one brother N. J. Smith and one sister, Mattie E. Williams of Weatherford, Texas and 4 grandchildren. Burial was made in the Verden cemetery with Hansen Funeral Home in charge.
