SMITH Graveside service for Vernon A. Smith, age 85, of Chickasha, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 14, 2004, at Rose Hill Cemetery. Rev. Laverne Goodnight will officiate. Vernon A. Smith was born the son of Joe Arthur Smith and Verna Ogle Smith on October 9, 1919, in rural Grady County. He died on December 11, 2004, in Chickasha. Vernon was born east of Chickasha, and grew up in the Chickasha area. He married Charlene Hill on September 8, 1940, and they made their home in Chickasha. Vernon started welding as a young man and worked in the shipyards in California, during WWII. He also served in the U.S. Army for a short time, before being given a medical discharge. Vernon moved back to Chickasha and worked as a welder in refinery construction. He also was an independent welding contractor, doing contract work for various companies including Pet Milk. Vernon attended the Tabler Gospel Tabernacle. He was preceded in death by his parents and two grandsons, Vance Stanley and Keith Smith. Survivors include: wife, Charlene of the home; daughter and husband: Verlene and Phil Stanley, of Chickasha; son and wife: Carl and Ann Smith, of Chickasha; sister: Rosalie Light, of Fresno, California; brother: Grady Smith, of Phoenix, Arizona; grandson and wife: Kirk and Pam Stanley, of Chickasha; granddaughter and husband, Carla and Eric Feuerborn, of Anadarko; wife of grandson, Vance Stanley: Joni Stanley of Shawnee; three great grandchildren. Services are under the direction of the McRay Funeral Home. Viewing hours will be until noon on Tuesday.
