All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== The Chickasha Express-Star 21 June 2004 CECIL THARP Funeral service for Cecil Tharp, age 75, of Verden, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at the First Baptist Church of Verden. Rev. Edward Whitley and Rev. David Bradley will officiate. Cecil was born September 4, 1928, at Choctaw, Oklahoma, the son of Arthur and Annie Curtis Tharp. He went home to be with his father and mother and Heavenly Father on Sunday, June 20, 2004, in Chickasha. He married Betty Buchanan on June 25, 1955, in Oklahoma City, OK. Cecil graduated from State Center High School. He served in the U. S. Army for two years during the Korean War. After returning from the service he worked for Texaco Oil Company as a truck driver. In 1962, he and Betty moved to the Verden area, where he farmed until hil health began to fail. Cecil served three terms on the Verden School Board. He was an honorary member of the Verden FFA Chapter and also received the Oklahoma State Honorary FFA Degree in 1985. He was a loyal fan of the Verden baseball and basketball teams and was awarded Fan of the Year. He also had a special reserved seat in the Verden Gym. Cecil was a member of the Verden First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, one brother, Forrest Tharp, and one granddaughter, Melissa Tharp. Survivors include his wife, Betty Tharp of the home; son, Ronnie Tharp and wife, Ronda of Verden; son, Gary Tharp and wife, Marla of Verden; daughter, Glenda Walls of Verden, granddaughter, Kelsey Tharp of Verden; grandsons, Chad Tharp and Cody Walls of Verden; brother, Chuch Tharp of Harrah; sisters, Reta Hamilton of Wichita, KS, Genny Davis of Oklahoma City, Bonnie Ptacek of Kansas City; mother-in-law, Opal Buchanan of Verden; aunts, Nell Tinker of Arkansas, Cecil Curtis of Oklahoma City; very special relative, J. B. Chambers of Mangum; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the Scott Carter Foundation, Children's Cancer Research, P. O. Box 7000448, Tulsa, OK, 74170-0048. Interment will be in the Memory Lane Cemetery, Anadarko.
