All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::El Reno Cemetery--El Reno OK © The Chickasha Express-Star 22 Dec 2003 Elmer Alfred Von Tungeln Funeral services for Elmer Alfred Von Tungeln, 87, of Verden, Oklahoma, will be held Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. in the Verden United Methodist Church, with Don Bortell officiating and Mark Whitley assisting. Elmer A. Von Tungeln was born August 21, 1916, in El Reno, Oklahoma, the son of Fred Von Tungeln and Anna Rinderhagen Von Tungeln. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Grady Memorial Hospital Friday, December 19, 2003, in Chickasha. Elmer grew up and attended El Reno High School in El Reno, Oklahoma, where he was a member of the EHS Indians wrestling team and wrestled the 158# dual. Elmer and his older brother were known by the nicknames of Big Battle-O and Little Battle-O. Elmer was the little one. Elmer met his wife Dorothy Bernice Cupp in high school, and after high school they married January 1, 1938, in El Reno, Oklahoma. Elmer was a lifetime member of the American Milking Shorthorn Society serving as president among other capacities. He was selected for many awards including; Oklahoma PDCA Herdsman of the Year, OSU Master Breeder, Kitchell Sayre Sportsmanship, Citizen of the Year and John Rowe Memorial Citizenship. Elmer judged cattle at state fairs in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. The highlight of his judging career was being selected to judge the Royal National in Queensland, Australia. Elmer was also very active serving in the community as a school board member for 20 years, held several offices of Oklahoma Farm Bureau and was a member of the Verden United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by both parents; one brother, Harry Von Tungeln; one great grandson, Alex Taylor Von Tungeln; and his brother-in-law, Dick Jensen. Survivors include his wife Dorothy of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Neal and Betty Von Tungeln of Oklahoma City, Dale and Faye Von Tungeln of Vernon, Texas, Clark Von Tungeln of Verden, Oklahoma; one daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Scott Cailteux of Pinehurst, Texas; one sister, Mildred Jensen of El Reno, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the nurses, Venus Gilbert and Jason Miller, for helping to provide for Elmer. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the Verden United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 361, Verden, Oklahoma, 73092.
