She was born in Tabler, Oklahoma. She attended Middleburg High School, where she played basketball and softball. In 1946 she was named 'All State Guard.' She married Jim S. Whinery on December 22, 1946. They moved to California and had three children. She attended U.O.P. and graduated with a teaching credential. She taught 3rd and 4th grade for 41 years in the Sylvan School District. She is a member of Orangeburg Avenue Baptist Church. She was involved with Newcomers and Sciots. she was the first lady awarded Sciot Lady of the Year in 2000. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Jim S. Whinery; their children; son Jim L. Whinery, and daughter Vickie Whinery-Solis; Grandchildren; Jay Whinery, Heather Tutorow, Heidi Evans, Todd and Tim Solis and 13 great grand children. She was preceded in death by son Jerry L. Whinery. Viewing will be on Thursday September 21st from 4p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lakewood Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Friday, September 22nd 10a.m. at Orangeburg Avenue Baptist Church, 313 Orangeburg Ave. Modesto, CA. Private burial to follow. Whinery April 22, 1929 - Sept. 16, 2006 Glenna Jean Whinery, 77, of Modesto died Saturday at her home. Mrs. Whinery was a native of Tabler, Okla. She lived in Modesto 56 years, and previously lived in Oakland three years and Chickasha, Okla., 18 years. She was a graduate of the University of the Pacific and was a third-and fourth-grade teacher in the Sylvan School District for 41 years. She was a member of Orangeburg Avenue Baptist Church, and was involved with Newcomers and Sciots, where she was chosen to be lady of the year in 2003. She is survived by her husband, Jim S. Whinery of Modesto; children, Jim L. Whinery of Oakdale and Vickie Whinery-Solis of Modesto; and five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Jerry L. Whinery. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Lakewood Funeral Home, Hughson. A service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Orangeburg Avenue Baptist Church. Private burial at Lakewood Memorial Park.
