A come and go party will honor Ruby from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12, as she celebrates her 100th birthday. The honoree requests no gifts, please. As one might imagine, things can certainly change over the course of 100 years. But to Mrs. Brewer, it does not take imagination. It takes memory. She was there and witnessed change after change. During her lifetime, Oklahoma became a state. She has seen 18 presidents elected in the 100 years of her life. President Theodore Roosevelt was in charge of the United States when she was born. She is testimony to the sheer determination of the American people, having lived through the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, the polio epidemic, numerous wars and her own personal health problems these past few years. Although Ruby never learned to drive, she was around when Henry Ford invented the Model-T. She has watched fashions come and go and come again. She has seen television (black and white, now color) and now the personal computer replace the radio and newspaper as the primary sources of information in the home. Without all of the modern conveniences available today, Ruby grew up learning how to take care of herself and her family. As she aged, new inventions for the home made her job much easier. The dishwasher, washing machine and dryer came along and helped her with her dishes and laundry. Ruby sometimes still insists that her laundry and dishes be done the old fashion way by hand. With all the new ways to buy and preserve food, Ruby prefers the taste of the home grown and home preserved vegetables to store bought and canned vegetables. At a young age, Ruby learned to garden and tended gardens most of her life never wasting any of the produce, preserving what her family did not eat. Although things have changed substantially in the years since she was born, some things will never change. She received much joy and love with the births of her daughters, Wanda Johnson of Rush Springs, and Betty Jean Morgan of Oklahoma City. Ruby has many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. Ruby's love for her family and her concern for her neighbors will never change. Ruby likes to visit with her family and friends reminiscing about old times and reminding them of how things used to be. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Grady County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/grady/grady.html
