Jack Featherston minister of the First Methodist Church officiating. They moved to Chickasha in September of 1963. The couple have been very active in civic and community life. They are the former owners of The Star Publishing Company which they purchased in 1975 and included three newspapers in Grady County and one in Stephens County. The newspapers will be remembered as The Chickasha Star, The Tuttle Times, The Minco Minstrel and The Duncan Eagle. There was a time when they made an effort to cover all of the meetings in the county. Frances remarked once that she felt she was as member of every club in town. Marshall is a pilot and loved to write about his family trips in his Hi Neighbor! column. He began writing his Hi Neighbor! column in 1951 when he was employed at the Anadarko Daily News as their circulation manager. In 1953 he established The Marshall Settle Photography Studio. He sold that business (which is now Settle Studio of Photography) to his brother Manly in 1963. He then moved his family to Chickasha to become District Manager for Farmers Insurance Group. He managed insurance agencies in Chickasha, Anadarko, and El Reno. Later he became an independent agent, and also sold Securities and Life Insurance for Wadell and Reed. In 1995 under son David's management The Chickasha Star became The Daily Chickasha Star. The three county newspapers were purchased by CNHI in November 1998. The CNHI Company also had purchased the Chickasha Daily Express and merged the two newspapers that are now known as The Express-Star. The CNHI Company still publishes The Tuttle Times in Tuttle, but ceased publishing The Minco Minstrel the oldest newspaper in the state soon after the purchase. The Duncan Banner purchased the Duncan Eagle in 1983. In May of 1987 the Settle family purchased The Daily Tiller and Toiler in Lamed, Kansas and later, The Ellenwood Leader in Ellenwood, Kansas. Under son John and his wife Paula's management these newspapers have been merged with 11 other newspapers in Kansas and one in Nebraska, and is known as The Main Street Media Group, headquartered in Lamed, Kansas. Currently, John is also the County Attorney of Pawnee County, Kansas, and David with his wife Anita operate an Allstate Insurance Agency in Norman, Oklahoma. Marshall served as Governor of District 5770 of Rotary International in 1973 to 1974 and in 1994 served as the President of the Oklahoma Press Association. The couple met in 1954 when he took her photograph for the Anadarko School annual and later hired her for a summer job. Their two children John Marshall and wife Paula live in Lamed, Kansas. The youngest daughter, Kelly Frances still lives at home. Their oldest daughter, Katie Gilkey also lives in Lamed with her husband David Gilkey and sons Logan and Rhett Marshall. Their third daughter, Lindsey is attending college in Wichita, Kansas. David and wife Anita live in Chickasha with their three children, Alana, Julie and Peter. The couple request no gifts, just the sharing of this very special day. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Grady County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/grady/grady.html
