Callagy Dec. 21, 1923 - June 19, 2006 A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 5th, at 11:00 a.m., at Doughty-Calhoun & O'Meara Mortuary, 1100 Truxtun Ave., Bakersfield. Monsignor Ronald Swett of St. Philip's will officiate at the service for Barney L. Callagy, who died June 19, 2006, in Bakersfield of a heart attack. He was 83 years old. He was born December 21, 1923, in Lamont, Oklahoma. He lived there until he finished high school and moved to Bakersfield in 1941. His first employment began at the Southern Pacific Railroad in east Bakersfield. In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was trained as a radio operator in heavy bombers and sent to Gowan Field near Boise, Idaho where he spent most of his military career. He was discharged in 1945 as a Technical Sargent and returned to Bakersfield for the remainder of his life. He was employed several years by Richfield Oil, then by Metropolitan Life Insurance and Life Insurance Company of the southwest until he retired in about 1987. He was married twice and divorced. He had no children. He was at various times a member of the American Legion, Elks, and Eagles organizations in Bakersfield. He loved to play cards and was a devout follower of professional football. He suffered a stroke some two years ago and has been in fragile health since that time. He is survived by a brother, William K. Callagy of Monrovia, CA; a niece, Cecelia Callagy Gutierrez, also of Monrovia; and a nephew, Dennis Callagy of Vienna, Austria. He has been buried in Bakersfield Union Cemetery.
