CUMMINS DIES Another old timer passed away when A. M. Cummins died suddenly Wednesday morning of this week. Mr. Cummins had not been in good health for some time. He got up at 3:30 to chase some dogs that were barking and dropped upon his return to the house dying in a few minutes. Mr. Cummins made the run into the Cherokee strip taking a claim four miles east of Medford. For many years he has lived in Medford. The funeral services were held this afternoon from the Christian Church of which he was a member. Mr. Cummins is survived by the widow, a son Lester, three grandchildren. Rev. Marshall of Enid conducted the services. OBITUARY A.M. Cummins died very suddenly of heart trouble at his home December 1st, 1920, at 3:30 a.m. He had been in very poor health the past year. Mr. Cummins was born in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Illinois, March 28th, 1859, being 61 years, 8 months and 4 days old at the time of his death. At the age of eleven, he came to Kansas with his parents. July 24th 1884, he married Miss Julia Prunty at her father's home near Orie, Kans., and to this happy union was born one son, Lester Cummins, who is now with his mother. After marriage they lived on a farm at Cleardale, Ks. until the opening of Oklahoma in 1883. They came when these beautiful fields were just prairie grass and the coyote and wolves roamed at will. They worked and toiled together enduring many hardships to build a home. But health failing they sold the farm and moved to Medford ten years ago. "Eck," as he was called, had many friends, always jolly and forgiving and ever ready to help in time of need and sickness. He was a good neighbor, an affectionate husband and father, ever thinking of the comfort for his home and family, even to almost the last, He was doing little deeds of love and kindness, which leave traces of affection that will never be forgotten. Mr. Cummins leaves a frail wife, one son, Lester and wife and three grandchildren, Harold, who lived with them, A.M. and little Evelyn, two brothers, Hutch and John Cummins and two sisters, Mrs. Ida Whitfield and Mrs. Tony Shaw and his wife's five sisters and families and three brothers and families which were ever as near and dear as his own to them, and a host of friends to mourn his loss. Bro. Marshall of Enid and pastor of the Christian church, preached the funeral, where he attended services when able, and the church to which his wife belongs. These relatives were present: Hutch Cummins of Arkansas City; John Cummins and son Earl, Mrs. Ida Whitfield and daughter, Mr. Savage, wife and two sons of Wellington, Kans., Mrs. Tony Shaw of Oklahoma City. The following are Mrs. Cummins brothers and sisters and families: Mrs. Amanda Darland, Deer Creek; Mrs. Allie Noteware of Hunter; Mrs. Laura Anderson; Mrs. Clara Fuss, George and Charley Prunty, all of Medford; Alonzo Prunty of Wellington, Kans. and Mr. and Mrs. Thompson of Deer Creek, father and mother of Mrs. Lester Cummins, and with his many friends followed him to his last resting place in Rosemound where we left him to rest in peace with his grave decked with flowers. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Grant County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/grant/grant.html
