Pastor Ed Boschman and Roger Poppen will officiate. Visitation will be held at Peters Funeral Home-Shafter, Monday, December 26 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Harvey was born in Medford, Oklahoma, a small town near the Kansas Border, in 1914. His parents, Henry and Katherine Gaede, moved to Shafter, California, in 1921, and bought a small farm. Harvey attended Maple Elementary School and excelled in sports at Wasco High School, playing tennis, basketball, and baseball. Sunday afternoons were spent playing baseball for the Wasco Cubs. After graduating from high school, Harvey boxed groceries at Safeway. As the depression began to subside, Harvey took a job selling cars at Chrysler-Plymouth. Harvey married Fern Wendland in 1936, and three years later established Gaede Pontiac in Shafter. The dealership was sold to Cass Garlitz in 1955, upon which Harvey entered the real estate business and became a broker for several years, and served on the Board of Directors for Community National Bank in Shafter. Harvey became Finance Chairman for the Boy Scouts of America in Shafter, and served on the City Council as well. In 1962, he was elected Mayor, and in 1967, he was Shafters Man of the Year. He was elected to serve as Justice Court Judge for twelve years and then was brought to the Municipal Court in Bakersfield to handle all traffic citations. He also served one term on the Bakersfield Grand Jury. Harvey was always interested in sports. He attended baseball school in Los Angeles in 1936, and played semi- professional baseball in Sam Lynn Park for the Bakersfield Coca-Cola team. Later, he refereed many basketball and football games in Kern County. A man of great faith, Harvey served as a Sunday school teacher for boys and adults, and served on the Board of Trustees in the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church. He is also a charter member of the Laurelglen Bible Church in Bakersfield, which celebrated 25 years in 2003. After retiring at the age of 65, Harvey could usually be found in Stockdale Country Club playing golf and working out in the gym. He is especially proud of the two times in which he scored a hole in one on the golf course! Harvey and Fern Gaede lived in Shafter until 1975, when they moved to Kern City. In 1999, they moved to the Rosewood Retirement Community. Harvey and Fern have one son, Ken, who works as a stock broker and lives with his wife, Joanne in Fresno. Harvey and Fern also have two grandchildren, Scott lives with his wife, Karianne in London, England, and Brooke lives in Washington, D.C. Harvey is also survived by a brother, Harold of Beverly Hills, CA; and a sister, Hulda of Wichita, Kansas. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Harveys name to the Laurelglen Bible Church.
