"Jack" Hite of Florence, who died April 7 of age-related causes. He was 99. Hite was born April 30, 1904, in Pond Creek, Okla., to Doctor and Margaret Sutton Hite. He married Signa Varn. They later divorced. He was married to Beatrice Whittaker for 52 years when she died. He married Gertrude "Trudy" Kawecki in Florence on Dec. 27, 1998. He studied chemistry at Oregon State University. He worked as a waiter and in various logging camps while in college. He worked on the Alaska Pipeline during World War II. He also worked as an electrician. He later worked at a lamp and shade factory in San Francisco before establishing a plating shop. His small shop had expanded into a large aluminum plate factory and bumper exchange with a branch in Boston when he retired. He lived in Sonora, Calif., and raised llamas before settling in Florence. He was an avid golfer and played five days a week while he was in his 90s. He also enjoyed hiking and world travel. Survivors include his wife; a son, James of Richmond, Calif.; four daughters, Doris Christen of Pleasanton, Calif., Elaine With of Pleasant Hill, Calif., Carol Heald of San Francisco and Patricia Snider of Cloverdale, Calif.; a brother, Doc of Portland; two sisters, Pearl Barger of Gresham and Marie Spencer of Sandy; and 16 grandchildren. The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. May 1 at the Evangelical Church of North America in Florence.
