(27 May 1909, Thursday, Elk City Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Mangum, Okla., May 17. - While resisting arrest by officers, who had come at instance of Samuel Parkey to quiet a disturbance the young man had created, W. E. Shelton, 25 years old, early this morning blew his brains out with an automatic revolver. Shelton was in love with the daughter of Parkey and her parents objected to his attentions. This angered him and he went to her home early today and created trouble. Parkey called for an officer. When the latter came Shelton excused himself from the room, saying he was going after a drink. Immediately upon going out he began firing, presumably at the officer, but shot himself through the head instead. Shelton was a student at the Mangum business college. The Parkey family is among the most prominent in Mangum. - Lawton Constitution. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Greer County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/greer/greer.htm
