Austin, 69, of Amarillo died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Paramount Terrace Christian Church. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Jester Cemetery in Jester, Okla. Local arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Oklahoma arrangements are by Carter Stewart Funeral Service in Mangum, Okla. Dr. Austin was born in Jester on July 17, 1933. She graduated valedictorian of Reed High School in 1951. She received her bachelor's degree in home economics from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and her master's degree in home economics and her doctorate degree in psychology, both from University of Oklahoma. Dr. Austin began her teaching career in several small school districts in Oklahoma before moving to Amarillo in 1955. She taught at Horace Mann and Sam Houston junior high schools before joining Amarillo College in 1969. Her professorship at Amarillo College lasted 33 years during which she instructed courses in nutrition, marriage and family, home economics and many others. Zuma's primary love was teaching students and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was truly loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed. Dr. Austin attended numerous seminars and conferences in her discipline and was active in Texas Association of Family and Consumer Service, the American Dietetic Association, Texas Community College Teachers Association, Panhandle Dietetic Association and Delta Kappa Gamma professional group. Survivors include her husband, Dr. David C. Austin; a son, Tony S. Austin of Dallas; a daughter-in-law, Christi Austin of Dallas; and two grandchildren, Slaton Austin and Kaleigh Moore. The family suggests memorials be to Dr. Zuma S. Austin Scholarship Fund, in care of Amarillo College, P.O. Box 447, Amarillo, TX 79178-0001. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 28, 2002
