All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************ New Mexico Della Dacus PORTALES, N.M. - Della Dacus, 97, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at San Antonio. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Bryan Loughmiller officiating. Burial will be in Portales Cemetery. Miss Dacus was born in Greer County, Okla., near Granite. She moved to the Oklahoma Territory with her pioneer parents. She left Oklahoma in 1907. In 1913 she moved with her family to Hansford County, where they farmed. She graduated from high school in 1923 at Spearman, Texas, where her family owned and operated the Spearman Hotel. She attended West Texas State Teachers College at Canyon from 1923 to 1925, before moving to Arch, N.M. She began her career as a primary teacher in 1927 at Rutherron, near Chama and from 1928-29 taught at Hollene. From 1929 to 1936, she taught at Richland. In 1936, she received her bachelor of arts degree from New Mexico Teachers College at Las Vegas. From 1936 until 1949 she taught in the Arch school while living on the Dacus family farm. From 1949 to 1966, she taught first grade in Portales schools. Miss Dacus received her master's degree from Eastern New Mexico University in 1954 and was named Teacher of the Year while working in the Portales school system, retiring in 1966. After her retirement, she taught for two years in Three Way, Texas, but maintained her home in Portales. She had been a member of the Church of Christ since 1925 and was currently a member of University Drive Church of Christ at Portales. Survivors include nieces and nephews, Wynne Lorene Payne, Mary Lee Crew, Lee Marie Watson, Joe McCrory, Dan Dacus and Ted Dacus.
