   William Lawrence "Bill" Spencer
   
   Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church
   with  Dr.  Howard  Batson,  pastor,  and  Dr.  Winfred  Moore,  pastor
   emeritus,  officiating.  Arrangements  are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral
   Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle.
   
   Mr.  Spencer was born in Reed, Okla., and had been a longtime Amarillo
   resident.  He  served  as  an  Air Corps Cadet in the Air Force during
   World  War  II. He graduated from Lamesa High School in 1943, attended
   Texas  Tech  University  and  graduated  with  a  bachelor's degree in
   commerce  from  St.  Edward's University in 1950. He married Helen Lou
   Watson on Aug. 29, 1950.
   
   He  joined  Shamrock  Oil  and  Gas  Co. in 1951 as a laborer. He held
   various  engineering  positions until 1961 when he was named assistant
   manager of producing operations. In 1971 he was promoted to manager of
   producing operations for Diamond Shamrock Co.
   
   In  November  1975, he was named assistant general manager of drilling
   and  producing  operations and in 1978 he assumed the position of vice
   president/general   manager   of   production.  From  1979  until  his
   retirement   on   Jan.  1,  1986,  he  served  as  vice  president  of
   operations-production  and  supply  and transportation departments for
   the oil and gas unit.
   
   He  served  on  the  board of directors for United Way of Amarillo and
   Amarillo Rotary Club, on the board of trustees for High Plains Baptist
   Hospital  and was a past member of the board of directors for Amarillo
   YMCA.
   
   He  was  a member and deacon emeritus of First Baptist Church where he
   taught Sunday school in the preschool division. He held memberships in
   Society  of Petroleum Engineers of AIME, American Petroleum Institute,
   Panhandle Geological Society and Panhandle National Gas Society.
   
   Survivors  include  his  wife;  two sons, Richard L. Spencer and wife,
   Connie,  of  Houston  and  Stephen  W.  Spencer  and wife, Natasha, of
   Dallas;  four grandchildren, Steve Spencer and Elizabeth Spencer, both
   of Houston, and Anthony Spencer and William Spencer, both of Dallas; a
   sister,  Joan  Wilkes  of  Austin; and a sister-in-law, Ann Glidden of
   Houston.
   
   The  family  suggests memorials be to Alzheimer's Association, 2200 W.
   Seventh Ave., Amarillo, TX 79106 or a favorite charity.
