After a long illness, the Lord called him home March 25, 2005. He is survived by his wife (Ina) of sixty-two years and his son (Joe Stephen), both of Tucson. He is also survived by three sisters: Marjorie Callahan of Oxnard, California; Mary Hawkins of Edmond, Oklahoma; Helen Hart (Robert) of Altus, Oklahoma, and his brother George Gable (Norma), of College Station, Texas, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Joe was always devoted to his family and his church where he was a faithful member for more than fifty years. Among other activities, he served for many years as an usher in the church, which he enjoyed very much because he liked greeting people and meeting new friends. He made friends easily and never saw a stranger. Joe taught the young boys Sunday school class for several years, and, with the assistance of another couple, directed the Boys Youth Training Union. He was later called as a deacon and served for over forty years in that capacity until he became too ill to attend regularly. He also served as Assistant Treasurer and as a Trustee of First Southern Baptist Church where he and his family had attended since l954. Joe came to Arizona as a teenager to work with his cousins in the farming community of Pima in Graham County. He later worked in a store similar to our present Circle K stores, located on what was then a corner of Highway 70 as it meandered through the farming area from Safford to Thatcher and Pima. He enjoyed that job because he was known by almost everyone in the area of these three small towns; he made friends easily. Joe served five years in service with the Army Air Corps during WWII, and later attended the Institute of Foreign Trade in Phoenix. He was employed by Grand Central Aircraft Company and later as an aircraft inspector for Hughes Aircraft Company, following the aircraft to Germany as a general inspector/ trainer. He changed careers to remain near his family and after nearly 20 years, retired as production manager from DuVal Mining Company. Visitation and viewing Wednesday, March 30 at 1:30 PM in First Southern Baptist Church of Thatcher. Service will follow at 2:00 PM with internment at . Memorial service will be held at a later date in First Southern Baptist Church of Tucson. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=68484039 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Greer County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/greer/greer.htm
