Submitted by: Richeson Crowder crowderj@nts-online.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------- RICHESONS - EARLY SETTLERS IN HARMON (OLD GREER) COUNTY, OK By Jolene Richeson Crowder Jacob Rice Richeson was born September 8, l858 near Gainesville, Cooke County, TX to Jacob R. and Angenerva (White) Richeson. On December 23, 1888, he married Mattie Missouri Powell at Alvarado, Johnson County, TX. Mattie was born March 2, 1873 to James Madison Powell and Martha Mary (Lively) Powell at Alvarado, Johnson County, TX. Jacob Rice and Mattie Richeson came to Oklahoma Territory in either l898 or l899 from the Seymour, Baylor County, TX area. He first homesteaded on another farm further north of the one that he received a patent on. He never applied for a patent on the first homestead, but sold it and moved to the one he received the patent on (NE 1/4 of Section 35, Twp. 1N, Range 24 W.I.M.) They lived in a half-dugout until they built their first house on the homestead in l903. The seventh child, Chester Asberry Richeson (my father), was born in the half-dugout. All of the children born after 1903 were born in the first family home. That house burned in l933. They then built another house in the same location. In l945, Rice and Mattie moved into Eldorado, Jackson County, OK. He died April 27, 1946 from a stroke. Mattie continued to live there until ill health forced her to live with her son, Wilford the last few weeks of her life. She died in his home (in Harmon County near Eldorado) on December 4, 1950. Both Rice and Mattie are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Harmon County, OK (located in the SW 1/4 of Section 28, Twp. 1N, Range 24 W.I.M.)
