Okla. Archives. ************************************************************ OCT. 30 LaVerne (Payne) Williams, 96, died Wednesday at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Gould with Reverend Ralph Chapman and Reverend Rick Simonson officiating. Interment will follow at the Gould Cemetery. She was born July 28, 1917 in Harmon County to pioneer homesteaders Harry W. and Linnie (Richardson) Payne. She married W. C. Williams, Jr., on September 4, 1938 at the family home east of Gould where they have resided for the last forty-five years. In 1929, at the age of 12, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and since that time she has been a member of the First Baptist Church in Gould. She has faithfully served her church in countless ways, including, but certainly not limited to teaching the Ruth Sunday School class for over forty years; directing YWAs, GAs and Sunbeams; and working in Vacation Bible School. One of her many God given gifts was encouraging and supporting her pastor and her church family. A great joy in her life was being able to participate in the 100th anniversary of Gould FBC this month. She attended grade school at Lahoma, was a 1935 graduate of Gould High School, and also attended Oklahoma Baptist University and Oklahoma A&M. One of the original Gould Cemetery Committee members, she spent 51 years overseeing and caring for the cemetery. She was also a longtime member of Chapter O of PEO in Hollis, Eastern Star, Self Culture Club, Altrusian Club, Lahoma Home Demonstration Club, American Legion Auxiliary, and Harmon County historical Society. She enjoyed working with W. C. and the boys in everyday farming activities and she never tired of spending time with her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She also enjoyed working in her garden and traveling - especially with the many dear friends she and W. C. made over the years through his service on the local Soil Conservation board. She is survived by her husband of sixty four years, W. C. Williams, of the home; two sons and their wives, Jimmy and Mary Paul Williams, Gould, and Gene and Phyllis Williams, Hollis; six grandchildren, Robert and Nikki Williams, Gould, Steven and Beth Williams, Greeley, Colorado, Melinda and Shad Hane, Stillwater, David and Sharra Williams, Edmond, Linnie and Devin Wilcox, Tulsa, and Gena Kaye Williams, Stillwater; nine great-grandchildren, Mitch, Kelsie, Dal and Austin Williams, Gould, Isaac and Andrea Williams, Greeley, Colorado, Kylie and Corbin Hane, Stillwater, and Gage Williams, Edmond. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Ruth Williams, Yukon and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her youngest son, Richard Odom Williams in 1965, her parents, two sisters, Gladys Payne and Vivian Payne Cochran; and one brother, W. D. Payne. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials to made to the Gould Cemetery, the Harmon County Museum, or the charity of your choice.
