Funeral services are pending with Kincannon Funeral Home. AUG. 4: Henderson Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Catherine Nohner Henderson, 81, of Altus will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, Aug-ust 5, at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, with Father Tim Luschen, celebrating. Wake services will be held Sunday, August 4 at 7 p.m., at Prince of Peace Catholic Church. Born November 16, 1920, in St. Paul, Minnesota, Mary was the adopted daughter of John and Irene Nohner of Wayzata, Minnesota. She died in her home on August 2, 2002, following complications of lingering illnesses. Her Minnesota childhood living on Lake Minnetonka revolved around outdoor sports, including snow sk ing, sledding, speed skating, swimming, diving, and tennis. She graduated from Mound High School in 1938 where she excelled in competitive declamation, debate, extemporaneous speech and drama. She held lead roles in both junior and senior class plays. As did many women of the time, she spent World War II years working in the war effort. She was employed by North American Aviation in Dallas and Los Angeles. In Dallas, she met U.S. Naval Ensign Bryce Henderson of Blair. They were married on July 22, 1944, in the Catholic Base Chapel on Altus Air Base. Together they reared three sons and three daughters on a farm north of Altus. She was woman of mirth and compassion who held a keen interest in national and world events. In her early years in Altus, she was a member of Aldonian Club, a variety of bridge clubs and served as an election official. Mary was an avid reader, a sports enthusiast, and crossword puzzle devotee. She appreciated fine music and valued solitude. Above all else, her joy was her family, and she was vitally interested in the well being of her children and grandchildren. She would drop anything, any time, to respond to their needs. Mary's avocation was the game of golf. When her youngest child entered school, Mary took to the golf course. She competed fiercely with herself and held the women's golf championship at Altus Elks Country Club seven times, a record which still stands. Together with several area women golfers, she was a founding member of Southwest Oklahoma Women's' Golfers Association. She participated in dozens of regional and state women's tournaments. Her many golfing friends enjoyed countless rounds with Mary, for she brought her quick wit and endless humor to the links. Her life was centered in her faith. In 2001 she was named Prince of Peace's Parishioner of the Year. For over 50 years, she provided hours of service to the local Catholic church, first to St. Magdalen Church and later to Prince of Peace Church. She was a member of its initial building committee, served as president of both Parish Council and Altar Society, and was a delegate to National Catholic Conference of Women. She was a Eucharistic minister and lector. Throughout all, she held ecumenical views and she embraced minority and diverse cultures compassionately. She was a member of Prayer and Share in her later years, and her deep faith gave her inner peace and the courageous spirit with which she faced several difficult illnesses and life's vicissitudes. She is survived by Bryce, her loving husband of 58 years, 6 children, 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Her sons, their wives and families are Scott and DeeAnn Henderson, Meridith and Scott Dee of the home; John and Kim Henderson, Ashley and Travis of Eldorado; and Thomas, Josephine and Hillary Henderson of Sweetwater, Texas. Her daughters, their spouses and families are Mary Jane and Robert Smith, Robert and Daniel, all of Cushing; Patricia and Leon Crosswhite, Rebecca, Mary Margaret and Patrick, all of Hennessey, and Katie, Marcus and Hanna Newby of Kingfisher; and Barbara and John Nichols, Margaret, Joe and Marie Claire Ferretti, Sarah, Stuart and Laurel Krous, and Michael Nichols, all of Oklahoma City. Josie Trevino of Altus and Mary Schoolcraft of Lone Wolf were her devoted caretakers, together with Granite HomeHealth workers and Jackson County Memorial Hospital Hospice staff, nurses and volunteers. Part of Mary's journey was discovering her family name, Levinski, and learning of her birth parent's immigrations from Austria. In her seventh decade, she was delighted to meet relatives she had never known, including 5 nieces, 7 nephews and a sister- in-law, Rita Levinski, of Darwin, Minnesota, who also survive her. Another sister-in-law is Frances Henderson of Kingfisher. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, John Nohner and Burt Levinski, and a grandson, Andrew Nichols. Mary adopted Oklahoma, and came to love the beauty of the cotton fields surrounding her, but she held special fondness for Minnesota, its lakes, tall timbers and her roots there. She valued her family and friends and paid special attention and cared about their lives. Her departure creates an irreplaceable void. Memorial donations in Mary's memory may be made to Jackson County Memorial Hospital Hospice or Prince of Peace Building Fund. Services are under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Johnson AUG. 5: Funeral services for Bernice B.
