She was born Jan. 23, 1913 in Avellino, Italy to Nicholas and Maria Rizzolo del Guercio. She arrived in the United States in June, 1915 and was reared in Drexal Hill, Penn. She was married to James Joseph Meli, Jr., and they resided in Bethel Township, Penn. until moving to Hilton Head in 1977. She was an artist and had worked as a secretary at the Media, Penn., courthouse for about 30 years before retiring around 1977. Her husband, Jim, preceded her in death June 11, 1988. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Phyllis del Guercio, and her step-mother, Maria Zecca del Guercio. Survivors include her son James J. Meli III and wife Melita, Blair; her daughter Carol Ann Gumrot and husband Michael, Wilmington; five grandchildren, Rhonda Garrison and Randy Meli, both of Blair; Jim Meli, Chickasha; Stephanie Hardy, Wilmington, and Michael Gumrot, Colorado Springs, Colo.; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Chase Garrison, Blair, and Ricky Hardy, Wilmington, and a step-daughter. Forgy Marvin Presley Forgy, 76, longtime Altus resident passed away early Friday morning at the Plantation Village Nursing Home. He was born on July 5, 1925 in Ventura, Calif. to Bernie and Pearl (Presley) Forgy. She was preceded in death by a son, Mabry Parker. Kennedy Elizabeth J. Kennedy, 94, Ada, died Friday. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City with Dr. C.A. She was born to Mary Fannie Fowler and Charles Baxter Watkins on May 29, 1909 at Eldorado in a half dug-out. She graduated from Lincoln School near Eldorado. She married Jeff Lawrence on Nov. 24, 1933 at the Eldorado Methodist Church They had three children, a son, Donald and two daughters, Mary Rodford and Jo Dyer. Her husband preceded her in death. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She loved gardening, quilting, reading and canning fruits and vegetables. She continued her active life in the Lincoln Home Demonstration Club for more than 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Jeff; her parents, Charles Baxter and Mary Fannie (Fowler) Watkins; a brother, Narvel Watkins and a daughter-in-law, Helen Lawrence. Underfinger Robert Joseph Underfinger, Sr., 75, of Altus, died Saturday in Altus. He entered the United States Air Force in 1953. He served during the Vietnam era. He retired from the Air Force in December 1976 as a Technical Sergeant. After retirement he worked with civil service as a corrosion control specialist at Altus Air Force Base. He also worked for Town and Country Bowling Lanes, Bordens, Altus Athletics and Bar-S Foods. Thompson Doris Thompson, 80, Moses Lake, Wash., died Tuesday at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation in Moses Lake. Because of her husband's transfer with the Bureau of Reclamation, the family moved to Moses Lake in 1952. Following her husband's retirement in 1975, they returned to Oklahoma to care for his elderly parents. They returned to Moses Lake in 1992. She is survived four children and their spouses, Jerry and Sheila Thompson, Moses Lake, Judy and Mike Morris, Mountain View, Calif., Larry and Pat Thompson, Bloomfield, N.M., David and Millie Thompson, Moses Lake; a brother, Dick Carter, Altus; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Underfinger Robert Joseph Underfinger, Sr., age 65, of Altus, died Thursday, January 31, 2002, in Altus. He was born December 22, 1936, in Hoboken, New Jersey, to Phillip and Florence M. FEB. 8: Aboussie James Ellis Aboussie was born June 13, 1913 in Oklahoma City to Ellis Michael and Massuda Massad Aboussie. Jimmy passed away at the age of 88 on February 6, 2002. Jimmy is preceded in death by his mother and father, his brother Sam Aboussie, his sister Fedwa Aboussie Kouri, his brother-in-law Salem Kouri, and his sister-in-law Emily Aboussie. Jimmy is survived by his wife of 62 years Josephine Tayar Aboussie, his daughters Janet Rosell, Donna Aboussie, Barbara Essaili, his son-in-law Dr. Kenneth Edward Aboussie, his son-in-law Abraham Essaili, his grandchildren: Janet Ann Rosell, Armando James Rosell, Andrew Jose Rosell, Leah Aboussie Gaither, Kenneth Edward Aboussie, Jr., James Joseph Aboussie, Amanda Jo Essaili, Yousef Abraham Essaili, and Hassan Jamil Essaili. He is also survived by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends from all over the world. After graduating from Blair High School, Jimmy worked with his parents and brother at The Leader, the family owned department store in Blair, Oklahoma, later moving the store and the family home to Altus, Oklahoma. Jimmy and Josephine opened Janet's, Smart Apparel for Women, in 1953. He and Josephine retired in 1989 after 51 years in the retail business. Jimmy was a proud citizen of the City of Altus. He enjoyed promoting Altus to people and businesses around the world. He was dedicated to preserving the partnership between Altus Air Force Base and the City of Altus. Most of all, Jimmy loved the people of Altus and cherished his friendship with every one of his fellow Altusans. Jimmy's family would like to send their warmest thank you to the people of Altus for their unwavering support, friendship, and fondness of Jimmy. Jimmy, known as one of the best-dressed men in Altus, devoted much of his time to civic and charitable activities. He was a member the United Methodist Church of Altus, a charter member of the Altus Lions Club, a 32nd degree mason in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Organization, a long-time Christmas bell ringer and board member of the Salvation Army, a member of the Altus Military Affairs Committee, and President of the Dads' Club of Kappa Gamma at Oklahoma State University. Jimmy's proudest possession was his wife and family. He insisted on the best for his daughters and put all three through Oklahoma State University. This dedication to education continued with his grandchildren. Jimmy was involved with his grandchildren on a daily basis and attended every important event in their lives. This devotion is Jimmy's greatest legacy. He is a benchmark of fatherhood. This devotion was accompanied by a tremendous amount of patience and love. Jimmy was a source of great strength and pride for his family. He was an excellent storyteller and always had an appropriate story for any occasion. Jimmy was also an avid golfer and taught the game to his grandsons. He scored a hole in one on the second hole of his home course, the Elks Country Club in Altus, Oklahoma. Jimmy was the greatest influence in the lives of his daughters and grandchildren and is the consummate example of dedication to the Lord, dedication to family, hard work and success in business, and dedication to civic duty. He will be missed and continually loved by his family as they strive to carry on his legacy. She was born Dec. 26, 1912, in Bottom, Texas to John and Minnie (Rigsby) Fox. She graduated from Blair High School. She married George Borden Dec. 18, 1928 in Tulia, Texas. She worked all her life, mostly in hotel and motel management. She worked in and helped manage several local hotels in her early years, including the old Shaffer Hotel in downtown Altus. She worked in Temple Bailey's grocery store on South Hudson for several years. She was the assistant manager at Cattleman's cafeteria in the Bunker Hill Shopping Center for several years. She managed the clothing and shoe department at Gibson's before going to work at TG&Y until her retirement at the age of 74 in 1987, when the store closed. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Altus and enjoyed working with the public all her adult life. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George in 1975; and two brothers, Fred F. and Bill Fox. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Margala and Hershal Milligan, Altus; a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy (Hoot) Borden and wife Angie, Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Arlist Fox, Altus; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was born Aug. 23, 1958 to parents William Edward Conway and Alma Lindsey Willis Conway. He graduated from Altus High School and in August of 1970 entered the Untied States Army. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1982. After his discharge he lived in Las Vegas. After a short period, he moved back to the Altus area where he owned and operated a retail store. He was active as an Elder at the First Church of God in Christ in Altus. He enjoyed fishing, working on his car, and being with his family and friends. He married Charlotte Lash on Feb. 15, 1969 in Weatherford. They spent many years together in Hydro. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. He lived most of his life in Hydro and attended Oklahoma Christian College. He was a member of the Church of Christ where he was a Sunday School teacher for many years. He enjoyed farming, welding and teaching his daughters all of his skills. He drove a semi-truck and a school bus for the Hydro School System. His favorite pastimes consisted of telling about his life experiences, playing the guitar, singing and spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Services were held this afternoon at Addington Baptist Church in Addington with Chris Rogers and Mike Bernhardt officiating. Burial was at the Addington Cemetery under the direction of Dudley Funeral Home of Comanche. She was born Jan. 18, 1912 near Hasty, Ark. to Calvin and Eva Qualls. She came to Oklahoma in 1914 with her parents in a covered wagon. They settled in the Tucker community and farmed there. She graduated from Comanche High School and attended Cameron and Ada Womens College. She later taught at Alamo and Graham. She married Billy A. Brown on Sept. 15, 1933 in Waurika. They farmed east of Comanche until 1960. They lived in Lockny, Groom and Amarillo, Texas. They moved to Warren in 1987. She then moved to Addington in March of 2001 to be near her son. She was baptized and attended church all of her life. She was a homemaker and enjoyed working in her garden, sewing and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons, Johnny Mack and Jay B. Brown, and one brother, Gene Qualls. She is survived by two sons, Eddie L. Brown and his wife Loretta of Warren, Bobby F. Mayfield Christine Mayfield, 83, died Monday. Services are pending with Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. McCarthy Frank Andrew McCarthy, 74, Altus, died Thursday. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Kevin McCarthy, his son, officiating. Interment with full military honors will be conducted at 2 p.m. at Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin. Arrangements are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. He was born Aug. 12, 1927 in Altoona, Penn. to Edward and Elizabeth (Winland) McCarthy. For 27 years he served in the United States Air Force in the Tactical Air Command. He worked as a draftsman, illustrator and superintendent. He retired at Altus Air Force Base on May 31, 1973 with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. After retirement, he worked at several rock quarries in southwestern Oklahoma. He had lived in the Altus area for the past 25 years. He is survived by 11 children, Aleta Taylor and husband Robert of Luther, Linda Pfleger and husband Dennis of Dickinson, Texas, Patricia Farrell and husband Jay of Mesa, Ariz., Michael McCarthy and wife Rebecca of Harrah, Retta McCarthy of Scottsdale, Ariz, Mark McCarthy and wife Sarah of Chandler, Ariz., Shaun McCarthy of Mesa, Ariz., Kerry McCarthy of Mesa, Ariz., Kevin McCarthy and wife Tammy of Apache Junction, Ariz., Lee McCutcheon and Shannon McCarthy both of Mesa, Ariz. He is also survived by a many grandchildren, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Smith Funeral services for James Orval "J.O." Smith, 87, Weatherford were held today at the Southwestern Christian Church of Weatherford. The Rev. Dennis Robison will officiate and burial will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home. He was born to James and Lillian (Mathis) Smith on July 27, 1914 in Hydro and died Saturday at Weatherford. He was reared and attended school in Hydro and Weatherford. He graduated from Weatherford High School in 1932. He attended Southwestern Oklahoma Teachers College where he was on the wrestling and football teams. He graduated with a degree in education in 1936. After graduation he taught at Thomas. He married Martha Jo Potter in Thomas where he began his teaching career. He served in the United States Army Air Corps. He then taught in Boise, Idaho. In 1946 they moved to Cordell where he was a coach and teacher. He obtained his masters degree in secondary school administration from the University of Oklahoma in 1951. He then taught school in Hobart, Thomas, Watonga, Walters and Frederick. He retired in 1974 After his retirement he moved to Weatherford where he worked as an adjuster with Stroud Crop Insurance. He enjoyed golf, dominoes, playing cards, basketball, football, and keeping the clock at athletic events. He was an avid OU fan. He is survived by his two sons, James Michael Smith and his wife Paula of Altus and Joe Bob Smith and his fiancee, Jackie of Oklahoma City; a daughter, Debbie Segars and her husband Don of Hobbs, N.M.; a sister, Opal Haws of Boise, Idaho; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a sister, Gladys Norman. Memorials may be made to the Gideons and the American Cancer Society. FEB. 13: Baker Stanley Morton Baker, 80, died Monday at Oklahoma City after a lengthy illness. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of The Good Shepherd at McNeil's Mustang Funeral Service, Mustang. He was born Jan. 9, 1922 in Vici to to Stanley M. and Kathryn Morton Baker. He moved to Hobart as a teenager and graduated from high school there before entering the United States Army. He served during World War II and reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served in Normandy, France and Rhineland Theaters and received the World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon and three Bronze Service Stars. He married Wanda Phipps, Dec. 10, 1946 in Hobart and they moved to Altus in 1947 where they owned and operated the Navajoe Uniform and Linen Service until retirement in 1987. They moved to Mustang in 1992. He was a 50-plus member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife Wanda and son Jimmy of the home in Mustang; daughter Leta Grimes and husband Phil of Mustang; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Highway 152, Mustang, Ok., 73064. Hert Larry Joe Hert, 58, died Monday in Oklahoma City. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Bethany Church of Christ in Oklahoma City. He chose to be cremated and will be buried next to his mother and father in Altus. He was born Jan. 27, 1944 in Lawton to Joseph Lester and Louis Hert. He graduated from Altus High School and from Central State University in Edmond. He was an All-State insurance adjuster. He co-owned Trinity Claims Service as an insurance adjuster and private investigator. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle with his friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his daughter Jennifer C. Barry, her husband Dennis of Edmond and an unborn grandchild ; and sister Brenda Kay Hert of Oklahoma City. She married Gordon Keith Mayfield April 21, 1937 in Independence, Kan. They moved to Altus in 1958 where she was employed for many years with George C. Wright Lumber Company and later at Red River Federal Credit Union as a bookkeeper. She also became associated with her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Verna, at Altus Printing Company and remained there until her retirement. She was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 61 years, Gordon Keith Mayfield; son Donald Nicholas Mayfield; sister Mary Ellen Eskridge; two brothers, Escal H. Eskridge and Rudolph Benson Eskridge. She moved from Tipton to the South Deep Red Community after her husband died June 26, 1973. She spent most of her life in the Frederick area. She was a homemaker and a member of the Trinity Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Lou Pitts, one son-in-law, Wayne Stewart, eight sisters, two brothers and one great-grandson, James Wilson. He was born Feb. 2, 1928 to Wylie Paschal Roberts and Mary Myrtle Larison Roberts. He served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. He was a taxi cab driver in Vernon, Texas. He was born to William Harrison Caldwell and Martha Elizabeth Slagle Caldwell on June 1, 1909 at Eldorado. He married Pearl Spencer Caldwell on Oct. 6, 1933 at Eldorado. They worked on a farm south of Eldorado until their health forced them to move closer to their children. He was a lifetime resident of Eldorado and a loyal member of the First Baptist Church of Eldorado. In recent years he lived at the Quanah Nursing Center. He was preceded in death by his wife Pearl Caldwell in January of 1996; son Jackie Caldwell; grandson Mike Whitfield; brothers Fred Arthur and Claude Caldwell; sisters Dora Welshan and Effie Beach and his parents. Burial was under the direction of Gray-Gish Funeral Home, Frederick. He died Saturday at Frederick. He was born April 20, 1917 in Montague, Texas to William A. and Nettie Ann Miller Gentry. He came to Tillman County from Forestberg, Texas in 1922. He married Maggie Lovetta Rogers on Jan. 4, 1938 in Lawton. She died Feb. 27, 2001. He retired as a sub district manager from Lone Star Gas Company after 22 years. He also worked for the Tillman County Sheriff's Department and the Frederick Police Department for 15 years. He retired from the police department in 1986. He served as a Boy Scout master in Tipton and on the Tipton and Frederick City Councils. He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Bettie Ann Gentry. She married Okley Leston "Buddie" Roulain on April 26, 1927 in Sulpher. They made their home in Willis and Ozark before moving to Mangum. She was a homemaker and also helped her husband operate a service station. Her husband died in 1992. She was an avid photographer, gardener, collector of clocks, made many quilts and played many musical instruments. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her children, Rex Roulain and wife Marilyn of Mangum, Norman Castner and husband Paul, also of Mangum, Thelma Homsey and husband Tommy of Amarillo and Barbara Norris of Clinton; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four great-great- grandchildren. He was a charter member of the Farmer's Gin Company, charter member of the board of directors of Kern Parell Inc. and sat on the board of the Semitropic Water Storage District. He was a life long member of the Wasco Masonic Lodge number 583 and the Wasco Elks Lodge. Service arrangements were handled by Kincannon Funeral Home. Nebling Fremont J. "Freddie" Nebling Jr., 61, died Saturday at his home. Born April 27, 1940 at Farmington, Mo., he graduated from high school there and attended nearby Mineral Area College. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1959 and rose to the rank of senior master sergeant by the time he retired in 1985. He was an aircraft mechanic and worked primarily on the KC-135. During the Vietnam War, he served two tours of duty in Thailand and two in Guam. Other assignments were at Elsworth AFB, S.D., and Grissom AFB, Ind. Nebling married Brenda Faulkner Nov. 19, 1961 at Wichita Falls, Texas. After tours of duty at Sheppard AFB, Texas, and Grand Forks AFB, N.D., the couple was transferred to Altus AFB in 1966. His military decorations included the Bronze Star with one oak leaf cluster, the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters. After Nebling's retirement from the Air Force, he took a job with Altus Athletic/OK-1 Manufacturing Company and was still employed there when he died. His father, Fremont J. Nebling Sr., died in 1965. Survivors include his wife Brenda of the home; his mother Katherine T. Nebling, Farmington, Mo.; two sons, John Nebling and his wife Angela, Rogers, Ark., and Fremont J. Monte Nebling III and his wife Vickie, Altus, and a daughter, Deborah Parks and her husband Brian, Altus; his sister, Phyllis Strauser, Rolla, Mo.; 12 grandchildren, Christopher Nebling, Brett Nebling, Clara Nebling, Elizabeth Nebling, Mary Grace Nebling and Seth Nebling, all of Rogers, Ark.; Jerrod Williams, Justyn Williams and his wife Tiffany, and Jeana Williams, all of Altus, Fremont J. "Buddy" Nebling IV, San Antonio, Texas; Jenna Dyer and Rebekah Parks, both of Altus; one great-grandchild, Steven Ray Williams, Altus.
