Funeral services were held Saturday at Trinity Baptist Church. Junior Nippert officiated and services under the direction of Stewart Funeral Services of Mangum. Burial followed at Roselawn in Mangum. He was born in his family farmhouse on June 18, 1934 near Shiloh in Northwest Greer County to George Roy Bull and Nomia "Jimmie" Roberts Bull. He had an outgoing personality and always had a smile. He was a friend to everyone he met. He spent most of his life in Greer County helping his parents and brother Jerry to farm cotton and wheat on the land that was homesteaded by Dean's grandfather George Bull. He was fun loving and was always on the go. One of his prize possessions was acquired at the Texas State Fair, an autograph painting by one of his favorite actors, Buck Taylor from "Gunsmoke". He attended church at Deer Creek and attended Plainview school in Greer County. He moved to Mangum from the farm in 1995. He recently moved to Richland Hills, Texas to be near his niece, Jerri Goforth, who he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother. He is survived by nieces Jerri Goforth of Ft. Worth, Texas, Marci Brazell and husband Randy of Seattle, Wash.; nephew Jeffrey Bull, Fraser, Colo.; great- nephews Aaron Goforth, Colton Bull, Chase Bull, Quinten Brazell; and great- nieces Colby Bull and Marli Brazell. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jackson Vickie Jackson died Friday in Altus. Funeral services are schedule for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Blair with Peoples Cooperative Funeral Home in Lone Wolf in charge of arrangements. Burial will be at the Blair Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Carpenter Irvin M. Carpenter, 96, died Saturday in Altus. Graveside services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wed-nesday at the Fairview Cemetery in Shawnee with Michael Haggard officiating. Lowell-Tims Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born Dec. 29, 1906 in Erie, Kan. to William H. and Mary (Perry) Carpenter. He taught welding and machine shop at Shawnee Tech during World War II. He worked at Geolograph Company in Oklahoma City for more than 30 years, where he designed and developed a geolograph that is used on all drilling rigs. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Cushing for more than 75 years. He was a resident of Altus and Jackson County since 1999. Survivors include children Jenene and Jay Mulford of Altus; David and Mildred Carpenter of Oklahoma City; grandchildren Michael and Sandra Haggard of Winslow, Ariz. and Donna and Ed Butcher of Kentucky; great-grandchildren Justin, Jordan, Alexandria and Lisa Butcher. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Calvary Baptist Church in Chickasha. The Rev. Kyle Cummings will officiate and burial will follow at the Laverty Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus. Visitation will be at the funeral home this evening and at the church on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until service time. Born Feb. 22, 1958 in Chickasha, she was the daughter of James and Bonita Freeman. She married Gary Dean Jackson in 1976 at Chickasha. She was assistant office manager for the Rainbow Girls International Fraternal Organization. She was an accomplished organist and pianist and was active at the Savannah First Baptist Church of McAlester. She was also a loving wife, mother and daughter. Survivors include her husband Gary Dean Jackson of the home; sons Gary Thomas Jackson and Gregory James Jackson; parents James and Bonita Freeman of Chickasha; sister Marlisa Garst of Chickasha; brothers James Freeman, Jr., John Freeman and David Freeman, all of Chickasha; grandmother, Opal Burnett and mother-in-law Lois Amerida Jackson. She was baptized in the Holiness Church of Blair as a young child. She attended school at Blair. She worked at Quartz Mountain State Lodge for 16 years and she received her cosmetology license from Aladdin Beauty College in 1981. She also owned and operated a beauty shop in Lone Wolf. She enjoyed playing bingo, fishing and spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Danny Ray James, Euell "Bull" James, Jerry Clyde James and Doyle Wayne James and nephews Dierk McCombs and Darrel James. She was born on April 13, 1912 in Lockney, Texas to Robert L. and Thirza Melinda (Wicker) McMillin. She married Carl B. Grantham May 27, 1933 at Altus. She went to college in Durant and Edmond. She taught grade school for a short while before she got married. She then went to work for the Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department. She retired from there Dec. 18, 1981. She received many awards honoring her for her outstanding work. She volunteered at the American Cancer Society weekly. She worked on organizing meetings and on the monthly news letter for the "retirees" of the City of Oklahoma City. She was active at the Wilshire Church of Christ, where she was a member for many years. In March of 2001, she moved to Plantation Retirement Center at Altus where she resided until she died. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by brothers and their wives, Jack and WynNelle McMillin of Blair and Bob and Wanda McMillin of Paris, Texas; niece Gayle Conger of Blair; nephews and their wives Bobby and Judy McMillin and Tommy and Estelle McMillin, all of Blair; great nieces and nephews Kay Meredith, Richard Conger, Johnelle Evans, Lissa McMillin, Kari Ramariz, Mike Miller and Bobby Miller; 13 great-great- nieces and nephews :three great-great nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends. Kenner, 72, Altus, died Saturday at his home. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Haynes "Buddy" Dugan and the Rev. James Mahan officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow services at 3 p.m. at the Elk City Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home. He was born Dec. 28, 1930 in Elk City to S.E. and Anna (Lawrence) Kenner. He attended high school in Elk City and Los Angeles, Calif. He entered the United States Air Force in 1948 in Los Angeles. He married Joyce Elms May 11, 1951 at St. Johns, Newfoundland. He retired as Staff Master Sgt. in September of 1975 at Altus Air Force Base following a 28-year career. He began work at the Oklahoma State Department of Veterans Affair in 1978 and retired Dec. 31, 1992 following a 14-year career. He was a member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church for several years and had served the church as Junior Warden. He was also active in the Boy Scouts as a Scout Master and had served the Salvation Army as a volunteer with the noon meals. He was an avid sports fan, a Dallas Cowboys fan, a volunteer at youth sporting events, enjoyed fishing and spending time with his friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter Norma Jean in 1958; and brothers-in-law Bill Eagen and J. Teddy. Nichols, 81, Altus, died Saturday at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. today in the Memorial Chapel at Kincannon Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Bohanan officiating. Burial was to follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home. He was born March 15, 1921 in Cleburne, Texas to Thomas Webster and Margaret Elizabeth (Hamon) Nichols. He attended Central View Schools. He served his country proudly in the Army Air Corp during World II. He married Thelma Cowger May 9, 1942 in Meridian, Miss. To this union, four children were born. He owned and operated a garage for a number of years before working for the City of Altus as a mechanic and later in the water plant until retirement. He enjoyed visiting on CB and HAM radios. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, a sister and grandson Steven Lebrecque. He is survived by his best friend and caretaker, Thelma; daughters Claudia Spence of Altus, Donna McNamara and husband John of Bettendorf, Iowa and Judy Wheeler of Lubbock, Texas; son Charles Nichols and wife Hermine of Headrick; grandchildren Charles, Carl and Angela Nichols, Jolen and Brad Labrecque and David, Allan and Marcia McNamara and eight great-grandchildren. Burial will follow at the Blair Cemetery under the direction of the Kincannon Funeral Home. He was born Aug. 4, 1943 in Borger, Texas to William Witt and Bethel Elizabeth Wilcox. He attended school in Bovina, Texas before graduating from Santa Barbara High School in Santa Barbara, Calif. He served in the United States Army briefly before receiving a medical discharge. He married Belinda Wheeler on June 16, 1978 in Clovis, N.M. To this union two sons, Landon and Tanner, were born. He owned a large trucking business for many years. He enjoyed fishing and playing dominos, especially with the boys in the Blair Domino Club. He was a great cook and loved R.V. traveling. He frequented many auctions and garage sales with Belinda. He loved to tease people and he was good at it. He was family man and proud of his sons. He attended the First Baptist Church in Blair. He is preceded in death by his parents. Burial will be at Lutheran Cemetery in Mercedes, Texas. He was born Nov. 10, 1929 in Rangerville, Texas. He lived in Harlingen the last nine years. He was a Sunday School teacher, youth group director, financial secretary at St. John Lutheran Church in San Benito. Services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Kevin George will officiate and burial will follow at the Altus City Cemetery. He was born to W.A. and Lela Dark on Feb. 6, 1911 at Hennypen in Garvin County. He married Opal Blanscet on Dec. 31, 1933 at Hobart. He farmed for many years north of Hobart. He also did some building and selling of real estate in the Hobart area for several years. After retirement he and his wife moved to Oklahoma City. He was affiliated with the Baptist Church for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters and son Jerry. He is survived by his wife Opal of 60 years; daughters and sons-in- law Mary Bowen and Dwane of Altus, Cleda Strehlow and Louis of Alba, Texas; brothers Howard of Oklahoma City, Orbie of Hobart, Lloyd of Fort Worth, Texas; seven grandson; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and many other relatives and friends. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Overton G. Russell Overton, 86, Vinson, died Sunday at Harmon County Memorial Hospital in Hollis. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Hollis. Burial will follow at Cave Creek Cemetery at Vinson. Funeral arrangements are with Stewart Funeral Service, Hollis. He was born Jan. 3, 1917 to George and Julia Overton about 2-1/2 miles northwest of Vinson. He graduated from Vinson High School in 1935 and attended Oklahoma State University for one semester. He married Reba Wooley on Dec. 24, 1936. They made their home in the Vinson community for 66 years where they raised two daughters and had a farming and ranching operation. He served as Sunday School Superintendent at Vinson Methodist Church for several years. After moving his membership to First United Methodist Church in Hollis, he served as Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, taught a Sunday School class, sang in the church choir and served on many church committees. Singing was one of his great loves, especially gospel music such as the song "Peace in the Valley." He was employed by the Harmon County USDA. Following that, he was employed by Greer County USDA for four years. He was a devoted member of the Masonic Lodge for 61 years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He is survived by his wife Reba Overton; daughters Linda Leonardi of Salida, Colo. and Leona Sherrill and husband Bill of Vinson; grandchildren Bart and Bret Sherrill and Angela and husband Paul Vogel and one great-grandchild, Wil Sherrill. He was preceded in death by his parents, G.W. Overton and Julia Worthen Overton; brothers Horace, Edgar and Forrest Overton; sisters Eunice Reynolds, Verna Williams and Velma Hiett and an infant twin sibling. Services are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus, are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness. Burial will follow at the Altus City Cemetery. He was born to C.J. Robertson and Flocie Stockton Robertson on April 17, 1927 in Pittsburg County. He grew up in the Altus area, and in 1947 married Lela Rutledge at Altus. They enjoyed many years together and were both active and faithful members of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness. His wife died in 1995. He resided in Elk City the last few years. He is survived by children Wayne Robertson and wife Sherry of Tulsa, Susie Horton and husband Harry Horton of Altus, Linda Whitehouse and husband Karman of Broken Arrow; sisters Goldie Bennett of Altus, Juanita Talbot of Grandbury, Texas, Agnes Mason of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; six grandchildren; three great- grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Local arrangements are with Greer Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Mangum at a later date. She was born Nov. 6, 1910 in Elmer to Robert Marion and Molly Fancher Pearce. She grew up in the Texas panhandle and around the Wildcat, Oklahoma area. A Justice of the Peace in Blake, she married H R. McAdams on Jan. 2, 1930. She followed her husband to San Diego during World War II and worked in the aircraft factory. She was member of the First Baptist Church of Mangum and the Rebeccah Lodge. She was also a Licensed Practical Nurse. Survivors are daughter JoDell Vaughn, Las Cruces, N.M.; son Bill McAdams, Phoenix Ariz.; sister Lois Atchley of Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren Michael Vaughn, Albuquerque, N.M., Cynthia Vaughn Smith and Amanda Vaughn of Austin, Texas, Ray Brandenberg, Donald McAdams, Howard Randall (H.R.) McAdams and Connie Patterson, all of Phoenix, Ariz., and 17 great-grandchildren. She was born May 21, 1908 in Eldorado to James Henry and Ellen Mary (Smith) Fowler. She married ElReno McPherson and he preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 1997. She worked for General Dynamics Assembly Electoral Wire in California for 13 years. She moved to Mangum in 1967. She was a faithful member of the Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers. She is survived by a brother, J.C. Louis was in the military and they made their home in several places retiring in Altus in 1968. Anna Laura spent most of her life in Altus and Jackson County. She served as Assistant Librarian at Altus High School for 30 years. She was a long time member of the Thomas Street Church of Christ where she was very active with the Thomas Street Singing Group. Her hobbies included singing, traveling, her grandchildren's programs and sports activities, family photography and genealogy. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, had a great time playing dominoes with is friends and loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren. He graduated from Granite High School in 1961 and joined the U.S. Army. He served in Korea in 1962 and 1963. He was station at Fort Sill and Fort Collins, Colo. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 14, 1964 with the rank of sergeant first class. He married Rosemary Schieffer on Aug. 19, 1966. They moved to Moore. He worked for National Life and Accident Insurance Company. After his retirement the family moved to the Tryon, Perkins and Carney area. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Perkins. She was born Nov. 19, 1901 in Headrick, (Indian Territory) to Charles Foster and Katie Irene (Curb) Clary. She was the oldest of five children. When she was about five years old, the Clary family moved to what they called "Sand Hills" just north of the old Metcalf church. She married Sam Penington, May 3, 1923, in Mangum. They had four children, Frankie, Charles, Sammy and Bobby. They lived in the Metcalf community until 1956, when they sold their farm and moved to Hollis and started the Penington Nursing Home. They operated it for 11 years. Her husband died Sept. 10, 1972. She went to work for Colonial Manor II Nursing Home in Hollis in 1973 where she did the laundry for the residents. She was 80 years old when she retired. After her retirement, she started going to the meal site. She seldom missed a day and usually rode with Audra and Virgil Caswell until they were no longer able to go. She moved to the Colonial Manor II Nursing Home on Sept. 1, 2001. She was a member of the Hollis Church of Christ. She was born in Madison, Minn. March 13, 1906 and lived in Altus from 1941 through 1953 while her husband Jim was project engineer for the Bureau of Reclamation on the Altus dam and irrigation project. She is survived by three children, Jim and Mike Call and Jackie Edgerton, all of San Diego. =============================================================================== FEB. 20: Knight Clois Chester Knight, 89, died Saturday. Services were held Monday at the Russell Baptist Church. The second of six children, he worked on the family farm as a child. He graduated from Gould High School. After graduation he went to Dallas where he worked for Guce Cone Company, making ice cream cones. He married Mattie Bea Carpenter on Aug. 7, 1937. When World War II broke out in 1940 he worked in a defense plant. In 1943 he moved back to Russell to farm the family homestead. He is a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Russell and the First Baptist Church of Gould where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of the Harmon County Memorial Hospital Board of Directors for several years. He retired from farming in 1980 and moved to Mangum where he and his wife joined the First Baptist Church. Interment will be held Tuesday at the pleasant Grove Cemetery in Perry, Mo. He was born April 21, 1912 in McCook, Neb. to Percy Malcolm and Edith Maude (Messner) Bell. He began work in 1930 for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad as a fireman. He was promoted to switchman, then a brakeman and was a car inspector the two years prior retiring in 1976. He was a member of the Railroad Brotherhood of Car Men. He made his home in Perry, Mo. for many years. He moved to Hollis in the summer of 2002 to be near his daughter Deanne Clement. Services were held Tuesday at the Gray Gish Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Frederick Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Gray Gish Funeral Home. He was born March 21, 1941 in Frederick to George Alfred and Maola (Nigh) Biggs. He attended Tipton Schools and graduated from Tipton High school in 1959. In high school, he was active in FFA, Vocational Agriculture, and football. He was a life long football fan and enjoyed attending football games, especially Tipton High School. He attended Altus Junior College and then began farming for the next five years in Tillman County. He moved to White Settlement (near Fort Worth, Texas) and went to work for General Dynamics in the aerospace industry. He worked for GTE for 17 years as a lineman/splicer in the Frederick and Brownfield, Texas areas. He then farmed for 23 years up until his death. He enjoyed working on cars, especially old cars. He was an avid collector and attended sales and auctions. He also enjoyed wood working, the outdoors and spending time with his dog "Red." He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church. He preceded her in death. During her active lifetime she was a homemaker, raised her family and also worked in the laundry at Altus and at Ogden's Retirement Center. She was a resident of Mangum moving there in 1993 from Ashville, N.C. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church. A family memorial service will be held at a later date. He was born Oct. 24, 1944 in Olustee to John Cecil and Benita (Gossman) McKinney. He attended and graduated from Olustee High School. He worked as a farm laborer and as a construction hand for several years. He married Candace Barnes on July 9, 1985. in Vernon, Texas. He was a member of the Olustee Church of Christ. She lived in Hollis for 35 years after moving from Plainview, Texas. Services were held Monday at the Russell Baptist Church. T he second of six children, he worked on the family farm as a child. He graduated from Gould High School. After graduation he went to Dallas where he worked for Guce Cone Company. He married Mattie Bea Carpenter on Aug. 7, 1937. When World War II broke out in 1940 he worked as a defense plant. In 1943 he moved back to Russell to farm the family homestead. He is a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Russell and the First Baptist Church of Gould where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of the Harmon County Memorial Hospital Board of Directors for several years. He retired from farming in 1980 and moved to Mangum where he and his wife joined the First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Helen and brothers Jack and Murray. He is survived by his wife Mattie of the home, a daugher and son-in- law. She had a strong love for animals. She was a member of the Martin Church of Christ and lived in the community for 78 years. She was a business woman who taught herself to type. She kept books and had good knowledge of the farming business. She also knitted and did hand work. After her husband passed away, she became interested in art and took lessons. She did many ceramic projects. Next she moved to Pflugerville, Texas where she attended school through the ninth grade. She moved with her parents to Tipton in 1925 and to Jackson County in 1927. On December 23, 1928, she and Eddie Lee Thomason Sr. were married. She obeyed the gospel Dec. 9, 1925 and was baptized by Brother R.F. Whitaker at the Tipton Church of Christ. In 1958, she and her husband moved to Oklahoma City where he worked at the Capital and she worked in the Pediatric Department of St. Anthony Hospital for sixteen years until she retired. After retiring, she moved back to Jackson County where she lived until her death. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1962, son Jess, her parents, two brothers, and three sisters. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Eddie Lee Jr. and Janice Thomason, Selah, Washington; Glen D. Thomason,Wellston; Foy A. and Ruth Thomason, Altus; daughter-in-law Sandy Thomason, Edmond; six granddaughters and four grandsons; fifteen great-grandchildren, and ten great- great grandchildren. She was united in marriage to Fred Seamster, in 1946, at Frederick. He died in 1983. She later married Samuel Lidy who preceded her in death in 1991. She was a homemaker and loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed quilting. She was a member of the Hawkins Chapel where she also worked as a pastor's aid. She was preceded in death by sons Freddy Seamster, Ernest Seamster and Marsha Lee Seamster; daughters Christine Isham and Ruby Ramos; brother O.C. "Charles" Webb and sister Ella Mae Webb. He preceded her in death in 1990. She was a life long resident of Altus and Jackson County. She graduated from Altus Junior College and attended the University of Oklahoma where she played on the varsity tennis team. She served as President of the Jackson County Extension Homemakers and was past President of the Eugene Field PTA. She served as President of Jackson County Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary for two years. She was a member of the Excellsior Sunday School Class, Communion Stewardess for nine years, Western Oklahoma State College Water Exercise group and the Silver Belles Dance group. She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church and an avid sports fan.
