"Dan" Abernathy Dan Abernathy, 85, longtime resident of Jackson County, died Friday at the Oklahoma Veterans Center in Clinton. Services are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Wiginton officiating. Burial will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. He was born June 8, 1915 to C.O., Sr. and Lilly (Rogers) Abernathy in Artesia, N. M. He graduated from Ozark School and he married Virgie Ruth Davis of Martha on June 6, 1942 in Hershey, Penn. He was in the United States Army in the 32nd Armored Division where he served over seas during. After returning to Jackson County, he farmed near Ducks Corner, east of Altus. He began working for the Jackson County Water Company as an inspector in 1971. He later became the manager serving in that capacity in 1971. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Altus where he was a deacon, a greeter and worked in Sunday School and the sanctuary lighting and sound control room. Survivors include a daughter, Cindy Abernathy of Cape Cod, Mass. a son, Paul Abernathy and his wife Gina of Goodland, Kan.; four grandchildren, Daniel Abernathy and his wife Anna of Satanta, Kan., Christopher Abernathy of Altus and Erinn and Lauren Abernathy of Goodland, Kan.; three great grandchildren, Kacey, Kyle and Brooke Abernathy. He is also survived by two brothers, Raymond Abernathy and his wife Tommy and Charles Abernathy, Jr. and his wife Mary of Altus as well as two sisters, Mildred Rowlett and Velma Abernathy, of Altus. He was preceded in death by his wife Virgie, his parents, two sisters, Freda Holloway and May Gates and a brother, Roger Abernathy. The family will have visitation from 5 until 7 p.m. today at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. Albinger Gladys Faye Albinger, 94, Altus, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, in Altus. Graveside services are set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of People's Cooperative Funeral Home of Lone Wolf. Albinger was born Jan. 2, 1907, in Olustee, Oklahoma Territory, to William and Virginia Jenny (Whicher) Montgomery. She attended school in Olustee. She married Carl Sheehan in 1920. In 1978, she married Kenneth Albinger. He preceded her in death in 1998. She was a nurse for Dr. E.S. Crow for 18 years. She was also a homemaker and a member of the Baptist church. Albinger was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Carl; her husband Kenneth; one son, Teddy Joe Sheehan; one daughter, Bobby Faye Dehtan; two grandchildren; four brothers and four sisters. Survivors include: one daughter, Dorothy Wilcutt and her husband Gene of Altus; a sister-in-law, Verna Jones Sheehan Hall of Meers; five grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tabernacle Baptist Church of Altus. Anderson Melvin Chester Anderson, 88, longtime Altus resident died Tuesday at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. He was born June 26, 1912 at Prairie Hill to Bascomb Shuck Anderson and Lillie (Evans) Anderson. In 1936 he married Alice Smiser at Prairie Hill. He served with the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1945. He then returned to Jackson County where he farmed and worked as Jackson County Treasurer until he retired in 1975. He was a member of the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall. Survivors include his wife, Alice of the home in Altus; two sons, Don Anderson of Altus and Sam Anderson and his wife Tina of The Colony, Texas; a sister, Evelyn Rice of Altus; two brothers, Paul Anderson of Amarillo, Texas, Vernon Anderson and his wife Modena of Dallas; two grandsons, Sean Anderson of New York and John Anderson of Dallas. He was preceded in death by his parents. Baker Charles L. (Chuck) Baker, 48, died Tuesday at an Oklahoma City hospital after a short illness. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd at McNeil's Mustang Funeral Service. He was born June 18, 1952 in Altus to Stanley and Wanda Baker and grew up in Altus. He was a graduate of Altus High School and Altus Junior College. He and his father operated the Navajoe Uniform and Towel company for many years He recently worked for DSO a division of OPUBCO. Survivors include his parents, Stanley and Wanda Baker; a brother, Jim, of Mustang; a sister and brother-in-law, Leta and Dr. Phil Grimes of Mustang. Banks Myrra Banks, 70, Blair, died Dec. 9, 2000. Memorial services are set for 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at the Altus Air Force Base Chapel. Brookman Ruth Brookman, 73, died Friday at Baptist Saint Anthony Hospital in Amarillo, Texas. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hollis Church of Christ with Bob Garton officiating. Burial will follow at Fairmount Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Stewart Funeral Service, Hollis. She was born Jan. 10, 1928 in Olympus, Texas to Ray and Flora Guthrie Mitchell. She graduated from Childress High School in 1944. She married Darrell Brookman Sept. 7, 1946 at Childress. She was a member of the Garden Club and Harmon County Museum, and a volunteer with the ambulance service. Survivors include her husband Darrell of the home; a daughter, Judy Messenger and her husband, Sam of Hollis; a son, Darin and his wife Jeanette of Hollis four grandchildren, Amy and Josh Messenger and Set and Katy Brookman all of Hollis. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Rayworth Mitchell. Brown Funeral services for Gladys Mae Brown, 87, Mountain Park, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Snyder United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Nancy Adler, pastor, officiating. He died Monday in a Snyder nursing home. Burial will be at the Fairlawn Cemetery, Snyder, under the direction of Becker Funeral Home of Snyder. She was born Oct. 2, 1913 in Davis. She married Cleburne Brown on July 15, 1941 in Cold Springs. She was a member of the First Untied Methodist Church in Mountain Park, and was an active member of the United Methodist Women. She was a homemaker. Survivors include Cleburne Brown of the home; children, Beth Burns and her husband, John of Altus, Wayne Brown and wife, Fay of Mountain Park; a sister, Willie Wilks of Snyder; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends. Brown Lennie Mae Brown, 98, lifelong resident of Harmon County, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, in Oklahoma City. Interment will follow at the Fairmount Cemetery under the direction of Patterson Greer Funeral Home. Brown was born June 4, 1902, to Samuel Houston and Annie Simpson Barton in Mangum, Texas. She married Ben A. Brown on Nov. 26, 1926, in Mangum. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and an active member of the Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening and cooking. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and nine brothers and sisters. Survivors include: two sons, Ben H. Brown of Raleigh, N.C. and Edwin Earl Brown of Los Angeles; one daughter, Marie Medrich of DeBerry, Fla.; nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Bunch Robert Lee Bunch, 51, of Alvarado, Texas, died Saturday at the John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, from injuries he received in an automobile accident on Friday. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Duke. Arrangements are under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum. He was born Aug. 14, 1949 at Hobart to Roswell and Willie (Coffee) Bunch. He lived in the Alvarado area for the past two years, moving there from Altus. He was working as an accounts receivable specialist for United Parcel Service in Fort Worth. He married Linda Summers June 20, 1974 at Lone Wolf. They made their home in Altus and Duke prior to moving to Texas. Survivors include his wife, Linda Bunch; his mother, Willie Coffee; two brothers Larry Bunch and Gary Bunch of Portage, Mich.; three sisters, Triga Jean Sam and Pat Randall both of McAlester and Cleota Lujan of Hollis. He was preceded in death by his father, Roswell Bunch. Bush Ralph D'Wayne Bush, 62, died Dec. 22, 2000, at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. today at the home of Tommy Tutten at Quartz Mountain. Bush was born Aug. 19, 1938, in Altus, to Gus and Pearl (Truitt) Bush. He married Darlene Marie Bush. She preceded him in death. Survivors include: four children, Denise Michelle Miller, Larry Dale Bush, Michael Dwayne Bush and Sandra Katrina Bush; two brothers and one sister. Chadwick Ola Chadwick, 92, of Midland,Texas, died Dec. 27, 2000 in her home. Services will be held 1 p.m. Jan. 2, 2001 at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel in Midland. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial park in the Garden of Love, under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home. She was born six miles south of Paducah, Texas on the family farm March 4, 1908 to Emma and Roscoe C. Martin. She and her family moved to Midland in 1958 from Altus. She married H.B. Chadwick Aug. 16, 1936 in Altus. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a loyal supporter of various church activities at the First Baptist Church in Altus and in Midland. She was an active member of the Samuel Department and Rebecca Sunday School class, as well as a member of the Sanctuary Choir. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three sisters. Survivors include son Daryl Chadwick and wife Deanie of Midland; three brothers, Paul Martin, Roy C. Martin, both of Amarillo, and Burlie Martin of Babbitt, Minn; one sister, Margaret Goodson of La Marada, Ca.; her grandsons Bruce Chadwick of Ft. Worth, Brent Chadwick and wife Jeri of Midland, Billy Buck Chadwick of Rockwell; one granddaughter Tracy of Waco; seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. hadwell Vicky Belle Chadwell, 52, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center in Lawton. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church of Mangum with the Rev. Wendell Harris officiating. Chadwell was born Dec. 1, 1948, in Mangum, to Bernard H. and Mary Lou (Miller) Chadwell. She had lived in the Mangum area for about five years. She moved to Mangum from Amarillo, Texas. She enjoyed gardening, arts and crafts and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include: one daughter, Melissa Lumpkins of Mangum; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenny and Glenda Chadwell of Amarillo; a sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Richard Simmons, also of Amarillo; one grandchild, Adrian Kemp; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Chandler Donald Robert Chandler, 78, Duncan, died Tuesday at Duncan. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Resthaven Memorial Gardens. The Rev. J.R. Earls will officiate. He was born March 29, 1922 in Altus to Donald Edward and Ethel Mizner Chandler. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army. He was a retired home builder and a 32nd degree Mason. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. Survivors include a son, Jack Chandler of Broken Arrow; a daughter, Debra Griffin of Marion, Ill.; Vinnie Moon of Grand Prairie,. Texas, Edna E. Davis Evelyn Merrill Davis, who was born Feb. 15, 1910 to Thomas and Maggie Merrill In Tulsa, died Jan. 9, 2001. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church with Noel George and Harvey Friedel officiating. She married her college sweetheart, Robert G. Davis May 14, 1929 in Perry. He preceded her in death on July 25, 1973. Evelyn was a wonderful wife and mother. She adored her grandchildren. One of the founders of the Girl Scout troops in Altus, Evelyn was a scout leader for the Brownies and Girls Scouts. She was a member of the Clionian Study Club in Altus. Evelyn was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church where she helped raise money to build the new church building. Being a homemaker was important to her. She loved her home and her yard. She never tired where her family was concerned. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and all five brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughters and a son-in-law, Merill Ann Parker and Sally and Bob Dantzler. Denton Floyd Allen Denton, 77, lifetime resident of Mangum, died Tuesday at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Baptist Church of Mangum, with the Rev. John Robles, minister of Trinity Baptist Church. Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Greer Funeral Home. He was born at Russell to Wesley John and Ruby Viola (Fagan) Denton. He served in the United States Army in Normandy during World War II. After the war he worked for the postal service, as a deputy sheriff in Greer County and later he was employed by Greer Funeral Home. He was a member of the American Legion, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Trinity Baptist Church. He married Florence Ferole Feb. 14, 1966 in Brownwood, Texas. Their hobbies included traveling and camping. Survivors include his wife, Florence of the home; children, Linda George and her husband, Douglas of Fort Smith, Ark., Larry Allen Denton of Oklahoma City, Julia Denice Jones, and her husband Buck of Hobart, Betty Sue Underhill and her husband Kenneth of Mangum and Violet (Vickie) Hixon and her husband, Kenneth, of Cordell; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Kenneth Denton. Garton Ollie Louise Garton, 82, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Harmon Memorial Hospital in Hollis. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Hollis Church of Christ with Truman Teel and Earl Segrist officiating. Burial will follow at Fairmount Cemetery under the direction of Stewart Funeral Home. Garton was born Dec. 29, 1918, to Orin McGee and Ollie Robinson McGee. She joined two sisters and eventually five brothers. The family lived all their lives in the La Casa community and all the children spent some of their adult lives there. Garton lived and attended school in the La Casa community and she married C.C. Garton on Jan. 2, 1935. To this union two children were born: Bettye Gladden of Hollis and Bob Garton, also of Hollis. In 1955, the family moved to Hollis and her husband worked as a peace officer for the county and city for many years. She worked for the Winford Warren Grocery and other businesses for several years. Following the death of her husband in 1965, she moved to Lubbock, Texas. She worked as a nurse for 10 years in hospitals and nursing facilities in Lubbock. In 1976, she returned to Hollis, working for a time in the local nursing home. Failing health required her to retire. After retiring, she enjoyed spending time in her yard and garden and spending time with friends and neighbors. In December of 1999, she had a fall that left her unable to walk. She spent the remaining days of her life in Colonial Manor I of Hollis. Garton was preceded in death by her husband, C.C. Garton and her parents, Orin and Ollie McGee. Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Bettye and Joe Gladden; a son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Marilyn Garton of Hollis; grandchildren, Mark Bilbrey and his wife Pam of Lubbock, Texas; Joe Bob Bilbrey and his wife Tammie, also of Lubbock; Kara Gollihare and her husband Brian of Hollis; Tancie Easton and her husband Donald of Lawton; Kathy Struck and her husband Pat of Coppell, Texas and Robert C. Garton and his wife Marilyn of Mangum and 10 great grandchildren. Haugen Robert N. Haugen, 84, Grand Rapids, Minn., died Thursday at the Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Peterson Funeral Home Chapel, Coleraine, Minn. Survivors include his wife, Betty Jane (Norlander) Haugen; children, David (Kay) Haugen of Jefferson, Ga., John Johnson of Olustee and Roy Johnson of Pottsboro, Texas; two granddaughters, two grandsons and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Christian and Effie Haugen, a granddaughter, Barbara Ann Johnson a sister, Noreen Thomas; and a brother, Earl Haugen. Hayes Bertha G. Hayes, daughter of Stuart F. and Emma (Rogers) Benson, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, in Altus, at the age of 92. Funeral services are set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Seiling Church of Christ with Mike Marsalis officiating. Interment will follow at Munice Cemetery, southeast of Seiling, under the direction of Redinger Funeral Home. Hayes was born Nov. 13, 1908, southeast of Seiling, on the family homestead. She began her formal education in rural schools and later attended Harper Christian Academy in Harper, Kan., where she graduated with the class of 1926. She furthered her education at Harding College, which later became Harding University, in Searcy, Ark. She graduated from there in 1932, with a degree in education. She began her teaching career at the Crescent School in rural Dewey County. She married Frederick Eugene "Gene" Hayes on Feb. 18, 1933, at Clinton. They made their home southeast of Seiling where they raised their son and daughter, Don and Sandra. Hayes taught in several rural schools before going to work for Seiling Public School. She began teaching English, then worked in the junior high school and ended her teaching career in Seiling as an elementary teacher. She retired on June 1, 1974. She and her husband continued in their ministry in the Church of Christ where she worked in all aspects of the church and was an active member of the Seiling Church of Christ. Hayes was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gene, one sister, Laura Benson and three brothers, John, George and Earl U. Benson. Survivors include: a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Sherry Hayes of Altus; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Loren Lynn Johnson, Austin, Texas; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Henderson Services for Arlen Henderson, 61, were held this afternoon in the First Baptist Church in Shamrock. Texas. Jack Lee officiated and burial followed at the Shamrock Cemetery under the direction of Wright Funeral Directors of Shamrock. He died Sunday. He was born Sept. 11, 1939, to T.B. and Ama Lee Ford Henderson in Shamrock. He had lived most of his life in the Wheeler County area. He was active in farming and ranching for the past several years. He served in the United States Army. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ama Lee Henderson in 1998. Survivors include his father, T.B. Henderson of Shamrock; a sister, Pam Cantrell of Austin; a step-son, Jimmy Brandon of Shamrock; a step-daughter, Barbara Sunday of Altus and three step-grandchildren all of Altus; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Hixson Homer Hixon, 92, formerly of Oklahoma City and Jacumba, Calif. died Wednesday at the English Village Manor Nursing Home in Altus. A graveside memorial service will be held at the Headrick Cemetery at 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. T.J. Willingham officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. Dr. Hixon ws born April 1, 1908 to Ephriam and Martha Stone Hixon in Headrick. He married Alice Richardson. She died Oct. 16, 1999. He was a professor of biological sciences as well as a researcher. He graduated from the School of Agriculture from Oklahoma A&M College and received a PhD from Iowa State University. He taught at the University of Florida and Oklahoma City University. He developed a medicine for skin disease and wrote a book, "Unity Structure and Natural Phenomena" in 1962, relating to physics and human physiology. Although he was raised a Baptist, his family joined and attended the First Unitarian Church in Oklahoma City. He is survived by his daughter, Martha Jack of Pinehurst, N.C.; a sister, Pauline Stivers of Oklahoma City; two grandchildren, Allison Jack of Chicago and Michael Jack of Oceanside, Calif. and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four sisters and four brothers. Houchin Thelma J. Houchin, 79, Blair, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in Altus. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Blair. Burial will be in the Blair Cemetery under the direction of People's Cooperative Funeral Home of Lone Wolf. Houchin was born Sept. 21, 1921, in Sand Mountain, Ala., to Luther and Cordelia (Tench) Uptain. She married Thomas F. Anderson, Sr., in 1941, in Gadsden, Ala. She later married Horace "Mutt" Houchin in 1962. She owned and operated the Ranch House and Ichiban Cafes and also the Green Parrot, #1 and #2, the Hideout and the Gap Clubs. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. Houchin was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands Thomas Anderson, Sr. and Horace Houchin; an infant son, William Darol Anderson; one brother and one sister. Survivors include: one son, Thomas F. Anderson, Jr. of Blair; two daughters, Thalia J. Kahalier of Joliet, Ill. and Judy K. Handren of Dwight, Ill.; nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Horton David Wayne Horton, 42, Altus, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today at Lowell-Tims Chapel with the Rev. Robert Bostic officiating. Interment was at Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. Horton was born April 26, 1958, in Altus, to Leonard William Horton and Essie V. (Lewis) Horton. He attended Altus Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1977. He served with the National Guard Unit in Altus for several years. He owned and operated a lawn maintenance business in Altus. He enjoyed fishing, playing his guitar and spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of the Church of God in Christ in Altus. Horton was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Juanita Brown. Survivors include: three sisters, Onetta Willis and her husband Romie, Betty Madden and her husband Larry, May Horton, all of Altus; three brothers, Nathaniel Gooden of Bakersfield, Calif., Oscar Jones, Jr. of Lawton and Leonard William Horton, Jr. and his wife Carolyn of Pueblo, Colo. He is also survived by a special friend Valencia Brown of Iowa and many other family members and friends. Hunt Jerry Don Hunt, 55, Mangum, died Jan. 6, 2001. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at the Mangum Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Ed Houston officiating. Services were under the direction of Greer Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Legion Children's Home of Ponca City. Hunt was born Oct. 9, 1945, in Melrose, N.M., to A. Anderson Hunt and Alice Draper Molarne. He was an active man, working for many years as a handyman and in the oilfield. He served in the Navy and later in the American Legion. While at the American Legion Post 121, he served in local offices, as a commander also as State District 7 Commander, State Service Officer and in those capacities enjoyed transporting veterans from the Mangum area back and forth from the hospital. He helped many veterans in obtaining benefits. He married Patsy Barry on Feb. 6, 1976, in Fort Sumner, N.M. He was preceded in death by his father, stepfather, Fred Roland and sister, Billie Simmons. Survivors include: his mother, Alice Draper Molarne; his wife, Patsy Hunt; his children, Jamie Hunt of Beaumont, Texas; Douglas Broadway, Midland, Texas; Donna Broadway, Odessa, Texas, Dale Ball, Fort Worth, Texas, Beverly Otero, Oklahoma City, Dolores Rose and Donna Ball, both of Houston, Texas; a brother, Howard Hunt of El Paso, Texas and sisters, Lucille Williams and Grace Fair, both of Portales, N.M., Glenda Durk of Hallsville, Mo. and Helen Dean of Clovis, N.M.; 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Jewell Ida Mae Jewell, life long resident of Jackson County, passed away Friday at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Johnson was born May 28, 1915, in Headrick, to Mr. and Mrs. Hodge Brantley. She graduated from Ozark High School. In 1936, she married Gus G. Holland. They were married until his death in 1971. For more than 20 years, she taught Sunday school at the First United Methodist Church of Altus. She worked at Altus Printing Company. For five years she was a real estate agent in Houston, Texas. In Renton, Wash., she married Charles Johnson, now deceased. For 12 years, she lived in Tamarac, Fla., where she was president of AARP and a member of Aldersgate Methodist Church. Survivors include: a daughter, Virginia Holland Cunningham and her husband Mike of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two grandchildren, Michael A. Cunningham of St. Augustine, Fla. and Stephanie Jason of Jacksonville, Fla.; five great grandchildren, Rachel, Bailey and Connor Cunningham and Brittney and Taylor Jason. Johnson Ray L. Johnson, 81, died Dec. 29, 2000 at B&K Nursing Center in Hobart. Services will be Jan. 2, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Greer Funeral Home Chapel in Mangum. Officiating will be Rev. He served in the army and lived his lifetime in the Mangum area. He married Delila McGrady on Dec. 31, 1938 in Mangum. He farmed and ranched a number of years before going to work at the Oklahoma State Reformatory and retired as a correctional officer a number of years ago. He enjoyed being in parades and at public events with his team of mules and wagon. He enjoyed traveling, meeting people and sharing his joy. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Harold and Roy Johnson, a sister Joyce Benilla, and a great grandson Paul Ray Grady. He is survived by his wife Delila of the home, two daughters, Janet Rockhold and Janice Grady, both of Mangum; seven grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 26 great great grandchildren. Jones Odie Lee "Okie" Jones, Jr., 68, died Jan. 22, 2001, in Oklahoma City. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Oklahoma City. Lassiter Tom A. Lassiter, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at the Mangum City Hospital, following a lengthy illness. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home. He was born July 10, 1913, to Andrew Earl and Rachel Catherine (Culp) Lassiter at White Flat. He graduated from White Flat High School. He married Burnice McClain on April 12, 1936, in Mangum. To this union were born twin daughters, Verna Jean and Berna Dean Lassiter. Lassiter lived most of his life in the Mangum area except for three years when he worked at Morgan Sash and Door in Oklahoma City. Upon returning to Mangum, he did cabinet work at Mangum Screen and Cabinet and also a number of years for Dewey Bryant Construction. He also did farming and lived in the Ladessa Community and White Flat Community. He was a member of the Russell Baptist Church, joining in 1964. Lassiter was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Earl, Bill, Johnny, J.P. and Quinton and two sisters, Annie Scivally and Minnie Gilliam. Survivors include: his wife of 64 years, Burnice of the home; two daughters, Verna and Berna Lassiter of the home; one brother, George Lassiter of Republic, Mo. and one sister, Nora Bernal of Las Lunas, N.M. She enjoyed working outside in her garden and yard and cooking for her family. She served in the Army as a nurse, being honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Colonel in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1972. Megli was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. Nix Vera Hestella "Stella" Nix, 91, Durant, died Monday in Durant. He was born Dec. 17, 1910 to Jasper and Kattie Patterson. He married Ora Mae Taylor, Dec. 24, 1932 in Mangum. They made their home in the Granite area until 1940 when they moved to California. They returned to Oklahoma in 1945, and farmed in the Lake Creek Community. In 1958 he became the foreman for the Sandyland Research Station at Mangum until he retired. While in Mangum, he served a an elder for the Church of Christ. After his retirement they moved to Norman. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, his parents, two sisters and three brothers. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jasper and Jayne Patterson of Norman; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Jo Ann and Roger Todd and Carol Jean and Darrell Wells of Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Peck Verna Mae Peck, 90, former longtime Lawton resident, died Jan. 21, 2001 at Altus. Funeral services will be at the Nazarene Church in Walters Jan. 24, 2 p.m. with the Rev. She was preceeded in death by her parents, a brother and two sisters. Pierce was born March 13, 1912, in Frederick, to David and Eva Pierce. He was in the Army during World War II, where he served in the South Pacific. He married his wife, Ruth, on Nov. 24, 1935. They were members of the Olivet Baptist Church for more than 49 years. He also taught Sunday school for more than 25 years. Pierce was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Beatrice Coffman and two brothers, John and Aubra. Pixley was born Feb. 22, 1927, in Advance, Mo., to William E. and Hazel (Koch) Pixley. He died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001. Following graduation from Advance High School in 1945, he was employed by the State of Missouri as a civil engineer in the highway department. He then joined the Peter Kiewitt Construction Company with his original assignment in Missouri. The company later moved him to Altus Air Force Base in 1955. He married Ruth Roster on April 4, 1956, in Altus. He started K-P Construction in 1958. He owned and operated K-P Construction and City Concrete in Altus, and A&L L Equipment in Lawton until selling the companies in 1976. He owned and operated Ozark Auto Salvage in Altus until 1983. As a result of his interest in recycling concepts, he established Southgate Recycling Center in which he was currently involved. His innovative methods at Southgate Recycling gained national recognition. Pixley was a member of the First Baptist Church, a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. He enjoyed television sports, hunting, fishing, animals and livestock. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Mildred Virginia McCutcheon was born March 31, 1916, to James Robert and Daisy Stout McCutcheon in Harmon County. She lived all her life in Harmon County. She was preceded in death by her husband Clifford in 1981; her parents; eight brothers and two sisters. He was born March 4, 1915 to Starling Lodie Foster Sifford in Godley, Texas. He attended McMurry College in Abilene, Texas, Oklahoma City University and Southern Methodist University. He married Ella Carter March 7, 1974 at Olustee United Methodist Church. He served for more than 46 years as a full-time Methodist minister in more than 20 towns in Oklahoma and Texas. He retired in 1981 in Hollis. He was a member of the Lions Club, a Boy Scout leader and preached at the nursing home here in Hollis for many years after he retired. His hobbies included music, spending time outside and working in his yard and garden. He worked with youth and with the elderly in the nursing home. Survivors include his wife, Ella of Hollis; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dana and Scott Zerger of Oklahoma City and Jessie and Gilbert Feather of Tulsa; a step-daughter, Sue Robinson of Hollis; a sister and brother-in-law, Lula Mae and Jim Ridlehuber of Temple, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and eight step-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents S.A. and Lodie Sifford, and his first wife, Grace Hill. Smith Aubrey Lee Smith, 74, Gardena, Calif., formerly of Altus, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001. Smith was born Jan. 27, 1926, in Altus, and attended Altus Schools. He served in the Navy Air Corps in World War II. He flew 187 missions. He is survived by: Marjorie Johnson of Hemet, Calif. and Gwen Belmont of Oklahoma City. Smith Martha Jo Smith, 82, of Weatherford, died Jan. 3, 2001 in Oklahoma City. Funeral services will be held Jan. 6, 2001 at 2 p.m. in the Southwest Christian Church in Weatherford with Dennis Robison officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home. She was born to Louis and Hattie (Wartheim) Potter on July 11, 1918 in Claremore. She was reared in Thomas and graduated Thomas High School in 1936. She married James O. Smith Sept. 7, 1940 in Thomas. She was a hair stylist off and on for several years. She enjoyed being a wife and mother and playing cards. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Margaret Blakesley. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, James Michael Smith and wife Paula of Altus, and Joe Bob Smith and fiancee Jackie of Oklahoma City; daughter Debbie Segars and husband Don of Hobbs, New Mexico; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Dean Stewart, 58, Altus, are set for 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses with Adrian Marshall officiating. A private family burial preceded services Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home. Stewart died at his home Monday, Jan. 22, 2001. He was born June 17, 1942, in Olustee, to Carl and Pauline (Medlock) Stewart. He married Jeanette Lawson on Dec. 31, 1973, in Hallettsville, Texas. He was in the trucking business for more than 40 years, driving for himself, several others and most recently for Jewett Scott Trucking Company. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Stewart was preceded in death by his parents and an uncle, Herman Medlock. Survivors include: his wife of the home; three step-sons, Shane Veach of Sea Drift, Texas, Cheyenne Veach and his wife Donna of Tyler, Texas, and Shannon Veach and his wife Veronica of Tyler, Texas; one sister, Joyce Payne of Decatur, Texas; three brothers, Dan Stewart, Decatur, Donnie Stewart of Bowie, Texas and Carl Stewart, Jr. of Woodward; an uncle, Bill Medlock of Altus; five grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and church friends. Tarpley James W. Tarpley, 71, Snyder, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in Snyder. Graveside services are set for 2 p.m. Friday at Fairlawn Cemetery in Snyder with J.W. Denham officiating. Tarpley was born Jan. 29, 1929, at Mountain Park, to Everett Harrison and Louise Cunningham Tarpley. He married Barbara Langston on July 12, 1953. He was a mechanic for Wilburn's Motor Supply, Anthony Ford and was also self-employed. Tarpley was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Tolliver Olive Alvira Tolliver, 90, Long Beach, Calif. and former Mangum and Granite resident, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in California. Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Baptist Church in Mangum. Burial will follow at Granite City Cemetery under the direction of People's Cooperative Funeral Home of Lone Wolf. Visitation will be at the church from 9 until 11 a.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International or the Trinity Baptist Church. Tolliver was born Sept. 14, 1910, south of Granite, to Walter Keith and Della Ann (Maclin) Welch. She attended Central State Teacher's College and began teaching and coaching at Ozark when she was 17. She earned a bachelor's degree in 1930 and a master's degree in 1969. She married William "Tomie" Tolliver in Mangum on May 4, 1935. He preceded her in death on Feb. 12, 1993. She taught in Altus from 1965 until her retirement in 1975. She was one of the very few female pilots in Oklahoma from the 1930s through the 1960s. She and her husband owned seven airplanes during that time. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church until the death of her husband in 1993. She then joined a church in Long Beach, Calif., moving there to be near her daughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Della; an older brother, Aubrey "Boy" Welch and a younger brother, Ralph M. Welch. Survivors include: her only child, Tomme Ann Meadows of Long Beach, Calif.; her son-in-law, Joe Meadows; three granddaughters and their husbands, Kortni and Kay Root, Edmond, Shanyn and David Arbuckle, Phoenix, Ariz. Tomme Markell "Markie" and Ken Ferchau of Del City; one great granddaughter, Kelsi Ann Root. Townsend Jennie Cook Townsend, 83, of North Charleston, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Trident Medical Center in Charleston, S.C. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. today at Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Wells officiating. Townsend was born in North Charleston, the daughter of John Bunion and Wilhelmina Cook. She was retired from Ambler Industries, was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Oakbrook Baptist Church in Summerville. She is survived by: one daughter, Bonnie L. Donathan of Altus; one son, Robert T. Townsend of North Charleston; three brothers, Thomas A. Cook, James H. Cook and W.L. Cook, all of North; one sister, Virginia L. McClelion of Louisville, Ken.; three grandchildren; one step grandson; three great grandchildren and six step great grandchildren. Underwood "T.K." Terence Kyle Underwood, Jr., 78, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Mangum City Hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Willow with the Rev. Ben VanVacter officiating. Interment was at the Willow Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum. Underwood was born Aug. 10, 1922, in Willow, to Terence Kyle and Edna (Howard) Underwood. Upon the death of his mother, he lived with his paternal grandparents, Nancy Dooley Underwood and Wesley J. Underwood, during his youth. In World War II, he served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946 in the South Pacific. He was a lieutenant in the Army National Guard, 45th Division, during the action in Korea, from September 1950 until July 1952. Returning to the Mangum area, he became a charter employee of Armco Steel until his retirement. He continued to raise cattle and farm until his health failed. He was a lifelong resident of the Mangum area. He married Mildred Paxton in Wellington, Texas, on April 12, 1946. They had been married for 52 years. Underwood was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack Underwood. Survivors include: his wife Mildred; his children and their spouses, Kyle and Randy Cumby of Altus, Donna and Orville Locklear of Clinton, Bruce and Terri Underwood of Gotebo and Mechelle Ramsey of Dallas; grandchildren, Jay and Scott Cumby, Dean and Jennifer Locklear, Leah and Greg Christian, Kody and Bambi Locklear, Tracy and Justin Miles; seven great grandchildren and a half brother, John Wesley Underwood of Weatherford, Texas. Vann Ronald Neil Vann, a long time resident of Hollis, died Monday at Harmon County Memorial Hospital in Hollis at the age of 67. He was born Nov. 16, 1933, in Eldorado to Everette and Mable (Smith) Vann. He married Virginia "Ginger" Stallings in Amarillo, Texas. He served in the United States Army. He was in the roofing business and his hobby was playing dominoes. Survivors include his wife, Ginger Vann of the home; a daughter, Kathy Boggs, of Wellington, Texas; his mother, Mable Hawkins of Amarillo; a sister, Joyce Lewis of Fritch, Texas; three grandsons, Clifton Neil Boggs and Harold Dean Boggs both of Wilburton and Curtis Glen Boggs of Wellington and a granddaughter, Merissa Nadine Boggs of Wellington. He was preceded in death by his father, a half-brother, Jimmy Dale Bean; two sisters, Norma Dee, and Laura Lockwood. Ware Bernice Beatrice Ware, 90, of Altus and former Mangum resident, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, in Altus. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today at Trinity Baptist Church in Mangum with the Rev. John Robles officiating. Burial was at Riverside Cemetery at Mangum under the direction of Peoples Cooperative Funeral Home of Lone Wolf. She was born June 18, 1910, northwest of Altus, to James Oliver and Maud Ellis (Buchanan) Baird. She married Rufus Lee Ware on Sept. 21, 1928, in Greer County. They had four children, Pansy, Dale, Jo Ann and Jean. She worked as an aide in the geriatric ward in the old Mangum hospital in the early 1960s. She and her husband farmed and ranched in the Ladessa Community until the mid 1960s when they moved to Mangum. She moved to Altus in 1992. Ware was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 60 years, Rufus; one son, Dale Ware; her only sister, Rita Crabb and one nephew, Joe Crabb. Survivors include: three daughters and sons-in-law, Pansy and Lloyd Crow of Elk City, Jo Ann and Herman Seymour of Sayre and Jean Stamey of Altus; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and seven nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation. Wefer Clarence Eriven Wefer, 70, died Dec. 29, 2000 at Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Jan. 3, 2001 at the Crossroads Church of Altus. Rev. Abraham "Abe" Salazar will officiate, assisted by Rev. D.B. Salazar. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Eldorado Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. He was born July 8, 1930 at Eldorado to Luther Henry and Mary Evlyn Turvaville. He was a veteran of the Korean War and retired as a Technical Sergeant in the United States Air Force. After he returned to Eldorado, he farmed. He was active in the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks Club, and the Australian Shepherd Club and was a member of the Crossroads Church of Altus. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Survivors include daughter Rebecca Gee of Fairfield, California; stepdaughter Julie Strobe of Concord, California; stepson Kevin Hull of Concord; two brothers Donald Wefer of Eldorado and Roy Edward Wefer of Childress, Texas; sister Joyce Anilee Buck of Childress; four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. He will lie in state at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel in Eldorado until 8 p.m. today, and then will lie in state at the Crossroads Church of Altus, located west of Altus, from noon Jan. 2 until service time. Wesbrooks Billie Jean Wesbrooks, age 67, a resident of Wichita Falls since 1939, passed away Friday, January 19, 2001 in Temple, Texas. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Robert Allen, pastor, officiating. Interment followed at Crestview Memorial Park under the direction of Hampton Vaughan Crestview. Wesbrooks was born July 27, 1933 in Kilgore, Texas. She graduated from Wichita Falls High School in 1951. She worked as a dance instructor for Arthur Murray Studio. In 1959, she moved to San Diego where she met and married Bob Wesbrooks in 1960. She worked for First Federal Insurance before returning to Wichita Falls. In Wichita Falls, Wesbrooks was a homemaker to her two daughters, then went to work for Wesbrook, Inc. Billie, along with her husband Bob, was a member of First United Methodist Church for 40 years; Billie was choir mother for over 10 years. She also helped with Sunday School classes, delivered "Meals on Wheels," and was a member of the YMCA. Survivors include her husband Bob of Wichita Falls; daughters Lori Stone and husband Carl of Wichita Falls; Laura Woodress and husband Mark of Altus, Oklahoma; sister Patsy Breault and husband Ray of Wichita Falls; granddaughter Meredy Woodress of Altus, Oklahoma; niece Linda Potts and her husband David, along with their children Erin and Trevor; nephews Lenny Breault and son Evan Breault; step-grandchildren Richard and Sarah Stone of Wichita Falls. She worked in the delivery business for many years. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Wilson was preceded in death by her father, her husband and one son, Harold Wilson. She is survived by her mother, Anna Carter; three children, Lilly Howell of Farmingdale, N.Y., Joinna Rosser and Voncille M.
