JULY 1 EDITION: Duval Robert Y. :Bob" Duval, Jr., 87, Shawnee, died Thursday at an Oklahoma City hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery. He was born Jan. 29, 1914 at Moreland, Ark. to Robert Sr. and Lula Duval. He worked in road construction and started his own business in 1947. His company built the road up Mt. Scott in the Wichita Mountains. He retired in 1972 and sold his business to his son Robert Duval III. He was also a rancher raising champion Appaloosa and thoroughbred horses. He recently raised Limousin cattle and was also in real estate development. He married Georgia Lightner on July 5, 1936 in Shawnee. He was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters. Survivors include his wife, Georgia Duval of the home; five children, Georgetta Crosser of Shawnee; Robert Y. Duval III and his wife Martha of Altus, Gretchen Dolive and her husband Henry of Oklahoma City, Gayla Nicholson and her husband James, North Richland Hills, Texas; Steve Duval and his wife Vicki of Shawnee; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Pillow Mary Marie Pillow passed away June 20. Services were held Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Hobart Burial followed at the Altus Cemetery. She was born on July 11, 1910 near Humphreys to Thomas and Gussie Thurmond. She married A.C. Pillow on Jan 17, 1928 and they moved to a farm south of Hobart, In the following years, they farmed, owned a grocery store, gas station, motel, bowling alley and a skating rink. They did custom wheat harvesting as well as custom hay swathing and bailing, They also owned the Pillow's Bar and Domino Parlor before retiring in the 1990's. Survivors include a daughter, Loretta (Lori) Smith, Littleton, Colo.; two grandchildren, Chet Smith, Littleton, Colo. and Chandra Leeper and her husband Aaron of Aurora, Colo.; a great-granddaughter, Madison Sue Leeper of Aurora, Colo.; three brothers, Harrison Thurmond of Elmer, Harding Thurmond and J.C. Thurmond, both of Altus; three sisters, Faye Smith, Fresno, Calif., Emma Lou Mason, Glendale, Calif. and Martha Nicholas, Olton, Texas. Her husband, a brother, John Thurmond and sister, Oma Roudebush Sutton preceded her in death. Visitation will be at the Brown/Christian Funeral Home Monday from noon until 8 p.m. Walker Jewel Mae "Brinkman" Walker, 93, and longtime Altus resident, passed away Thursday. Services, under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, are set for 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Episcopal Church. Burial will follow at Restlawn Cemetery. The Rev. Jim Mahan will officiate. She was born Feb. 26, 1909 at Eldorado, Oklahoma to John H. Brinkman and Myrtle Annie "Taylor" Brinkman. She married Jack Walker at Altus on Oct. 14, 1930. They were co-owners of an automotive shop in Altus. He died on March 23, 1987. She received an education in business and was one of the first women pilots. She was also a member of the St. Pauls Episcopal Church. She is survived by cousins, Genevieve Barker of Altus, Gerry Garlow of Lawton, Ophelia Street of Altus, Velva Mae Watts of Temple, Texas, Edward Brinkman of Corpus Christie, Texas and Gwen Miller of Headrick, a niece, Bonita G. Services are pending with Kincannon Funeral Home. Warnecker A Mass of Christian Burial for Gay N. Warnecker, 53, Enid, was held this morning at the St. Gregory The Great Catholic Church. The Rev. Larry Kowalski and the Rev. David Imming officiated. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Altus City Cemetery. Arrangements are through Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. She was born June 20, 1948 in Altus to George W. and Ethel Faye Hunt Roberson. She died Friday morning at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center of Enid. She graduated from Altus High School in 1966. She married Dan Warnecker Sept. 17, 1966. They moved to Maryland, Michigan and Louisiana before moving back to Altus. They moved to Enid in 1970. She opened her own business in 1993 called Medi-Scribe, where she did contract medical transcription for several offices around the area. Survivors include her husband, Dan; a son, Darren Warnecker and his wife Shannon of Fort Smith, Ark.; a daughter, Shandel Warnecker of Enid; two brothers, Darrell and Sam Roberson of Altus; three sisters, Billie Faye Waller of Altus, Louise Armstrong of Enid and Shirlene Condon of Slidell, La. and Dan's grandparents, Delores and August Warnecker of Enid. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents and a brother. Burial was in the Roosevelt Cemetery under the direction of Hackney-Gish Funeral Home of Hobart. He was born July 19, 1977 to Servey and Holly (Johnson) Alonzo, Jr. in Hobart. He lived in the Roosevelt area all his life and graduated from Hobart High School. He attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Weatherford and Western Oklahoma State College in Altus. He attended the First Baptist Church, Roosevelt. He was preceded in death by his grandfather Servey Alonzo, Sr. and grandmother Doris B. Johnson. Garrett Ruby Murray Garrett, 95, Lawton, died July 1, 2001 in Lawton. Funeral services were held July 3 in the University Church of Christ with Weldon Flanagan and Mike Bentley officiating. Burial was in the Fairmont Cemetery, Hollis, under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home. She was born Oct. 10, 1905 in Temple, Texas to Archie and Ella Barnes. She was married to Douglas Murray in 1924 at Altus. He preceded her in death in 1972. She then married Bud Garrett in 1979 at Wellington, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1985. She grew up in the Mangum area and primarily a homemaker, but had worked as an Avon representative and with her husband at their service station in Hollis. She moved to Lawton in 1988. She had been a member of the Hollis Church of Christ and at the time of her death, was a member of the University Church of Christ in Lawton. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserves obtaining the rank of Colonel. He was an active member of the Church of the Servant and an avid bridge player. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Charlene. Williams, 91, of Ardmore formerly of Altus died Saturday at Mercy Memorial Health Center in Ardmore. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church of Marietta. She moved with her parents to Altus in 1926. She attended Washington Elementary School, Altus Junior High and Altus High School where she graduated in 1940. She also attended Altus Junior College. She worked for the War Price and Ration Board from December, 1941 until April 1945 at which time she transferred to the Department of Agriculture, Farm Security Administration, later changed to Farmers Home Administration. In 1974, she retired with 33 1/2 years of federal service. She had been a member of the First Baptist Church since 1937 and Abigail Sunday School where she served as president of many occasions. She was a member of the Honey-Do Extension Homemaker Group, Jackson County Hospital Auxiliary and the First Baptist Church Intercessory Prayer Ministry. She married Bulas T. Spraggins in 1945, who preceded her in death in 1957, One son, Craig Spraggins was born in this marriage and he is a retired federal law enforcement officer. She is also survived by one granddaughter, Stacy Morey; one great-grandson, Harrison Morey and special friends, Jimmy and Marian Wood. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Cleatous, Walter (Red) and Leo Cross; and two sister, Willow Dean Cross and Hazel Hunt. She was born Oct. 16, 1916 to Ernestine Lance and Grover Cleveland Hollis. She was born the first of four daughters. She was raised and educated in Hollis. She became the Society Editor of the Hollis daily newspaper after her high school graduation. She married C.W. Cross of Kirkland, Texas on Dec. 15, 1940 in Hollis at the Methodist parsonage. After her husband's death in 1951, she attended Utah State University, receiving a bachelor's degree in elementary education and social sciences. After graduation she went to work for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. She lived in Washington, New Mexico, Nevada and Oregon. During that time she also took several trips to Europe and one to Australia. Survivors include a son, Thomas Hollis Cross of Bothell, Wash,; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Currier of Powell Butte, Ore. and four grandchildren, Wendy Marie Brock, Megan MyShook Cross, Daniel Hollis Currier and Thomas Allen Currier. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home. He was born Dec. 17, 1928 in Oklahoma City to Lawrence A. and Anna (Burkes) Doresey. He graduated from Central High School in Oklahoma City and had attended Western Oklahoma State College in Altus and the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He married Mary Castro Sept. 6, 1952 at Fort Riley, Kan. He enlisted in the Army Reserve at the age if 14 and was called to active duty shortly after his 15th birthday. He was appointed Oklahoma State Commander of the Veterans of Underage Military Service. He retired from the U.S. Army after 21 years of active duty at the age of 36 with the rank of Warrant Officer. He retired from the Civil Service at Altus Air Force Base after 20 years of service. He owned and operated Doresey Photo from 1970 until 1982. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Lions Club. He was a "That Altus Band" volunteer parent and a volunteer sports photographer for the Altus Times. He enjoyed reading, skiing, boating, camping, driving, photography and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and a granddaughter, Michelle Doresey. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Linda McElroy, Lewisville, Texas, Donna Shannon of Altus and Peggy and Bill Smiley of Chico, Texas; a son, L.W. Morris, 79, a longtime Altus resident, passed away Wednesday at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at the Altus City Cemetery. Sonny Tims will officiate. She was born to John and Addie Copeland on Sept. 25, 1921 in Altus. She married Howard Morris on Oct. 22, 1939 in Altus. She worked as a homemaker and was an active parent and grandparent. She enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Dafodill Club. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Altus for 20 years and also taught Sunday school at the Tabernacle Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters, Cindy and husband John Santiago of Altus and Nelda Beth and husband Joe McGee of Borger, Texas; a brother, Gene Copeland of Dayton, Texas; three sisters, Jamie Ragsdale of Fort Worth, Texas, Ella Dean Pace of Dayton, Texas, Della Nelson of Lebanon, Ore.; grandchildren, Natalie and Stacy Bruce of Borger, Texas, Jennifer Santiago of Norman, Robert and Wendee McGee of Aledo, Texas and two great-granddaughters, Kaylee and Kelsee McGee also of Aledo, Texas. Rooker Charles Edward Rooker, 81, passed away Friday at the Wilkins Nursing Center in Duncan after a lengthy illness. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel at Duncan, with Dr. Jack Robbins and the Rev. J. R. Earls officiating. The casket will be opened one hour prior to the service. Visitation will be held at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Masonic rites will be conducted by Darwin Rooker (Nephew) and Altus Lodge members, and burial will be at the Altus City Cemetery in Altus immediately following visitation. He was born Jan. 20, 1920 in Altus to Randolph Augustus and Bertha Pearle and Clarke Rooker, the ninth of ten children and the last to survive. He attended school in Altus until the death of his father in 1929. The family moved to a farm in the Friendship-Warren community where he completed high school at Warren. He volunteered for military service during World War II in 1941, served more than 3 1/2 years in the 670th Air Squadron in England and was discharged in 1945. He married Naomi Earls of Altus on Sept. 16, 1946 in the First Baptist Church of Altus. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in their home in Duncan on Sept. 8, 1996. He attended Oklahoma A&M College (OSU) in Stillwater before beginning a 31-year career with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. After six years with the W.C. Austin Project in Altus, he transferred to the Grand Coulee Project in Washington State which at the time, was the largest irrigation project in the world. In 1958 he moved with his family to El Paso, Texas and became irrigation manager for the Ysleta Branch of the Rio Grand Project until his retirement in 1977. He was selected to attend administration school for the civil service region and also served on the board of civil service examiners. He was employed by Mortgage Investment Company from 1977 to 1985. He was a long time member of the Friendship Baptist Church near Altus, a charter member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Othello, Wash. and member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church of Duncan. He was a past member of the Ysleta Lions Club and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of the Altus Masonic Lodge. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Kathleen, Ayleen, Cora Thomas, Robert, Lloyd, Trula, James and Margaret. Survivors include his wife, Naomi of 54 years; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn and Jerry Crenshaw of Longview, Texas and Charla and Deryll Friday of Sanger, Texas; three granddaughters,, Kasey Crenshaw, Julie and Kaitlyn Friday; a step-grandson, Jerry Crenshaw, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews. He was born Nov. 1, 1900 in Greenwood, Texas to John Martin and Annie Eakes McAdoo. The family moved to Greer County in 1903. He farmed in Greer and Beckham Counties for many years and retired from the City of Elk City in 1964. He was preceded in death by his wife, Birdie, and a daughter, Eileen Rae Smith. He farmed for many years and later moved to California where he worked for a milk transport company for 31 years until his retirement. They moved to Lindsay where he lived for the past 28 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lindsay. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Hattie Lethgo and Euna Mae Turley; and two brothers, William Shive and John Shive. "Cornell" Hensley, 84, Kingsland, Texas, died Monday at Sexton-Highland Lakes Hospital in Burnet, Texas. He married Martha Osborne on Nov. 20, 1933 in Tipton. They moved to Kingsland in 1970. He was a member of the Buchanan Dam Church of Christ where he served as an elder. He was an Elder in his church at Pierre and in Marble Falls. He was and iron worker and ship builder before entering the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was also a farmer, rancher and preacher in Pierre, S.D. before moving to Kingland. He served as a board member of the York Christian College and the Eastern European Missionaries. He was born June 24, 1923 in Lawton to Rudolph and Mary (Yeirl) Klein,. He was a veteran of World War II when he served in the Army Air Corp. He retired in 1968 from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant He worked at Altus Air Force Base for 20 years until he retired in 1982. He was a former Hobart resident and lived in Altus for 20 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters. Metcalf Walter Raymond "Dub" Metcalf passed away Monday at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Kincannon Funeral Home Chapel in Altus with Harold Metcalf officiating. Burial will be at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home. He was born July 27, 1917 to Walter Raymond Metcalf, Sr. and Emma Geneva Curb Metcalf in the Metcalf Community eight miles north of Gould. He attended the Hollis public schools from the first grade until his graduation from high school in 1937. He had a love for all sports and played on teams throughout his grade school, junior high and high school years. In high school he played quarterback on the 1935 and 1936 football teams and was the state champion half-miler on the track teams both years. He married Geraldine Spradling in January, 1937 in Altus and at the time of her death they had been married for 63 years. For 38 years he served as a deacon in the Thomas Street Church of Christ in Altus and devoted many years to benevolence ministries in his community. By the time he was 13, he was working in the grocery store, after school and on Saturday, with his Dad and older brother. He finished his "apprenticeship" as a butcher in Hollis at Kirby Corner and in "Doc" Charlton's grocery store during 1938 and from then until 1944 plied his trade in Paul Metcalf's grocery. He served in the United States Navy in from May 1943 until October 1944 in San Diego as a Petty Officer. He was assigned to the Boot Camp Ship's Company to train other recruits in the fine art of butchering. With his induction, all five Metcalf brothers were in the military service. After World War II, he opened his own grocery store in downtown Hollis, and operated his business until 1954. He moved his family to Altus and ran a neighborhood store on East Pecan Street near Eugene Field School. He once said, "I didn't know it then, but I had invented the 7-11 type convenience store." After 20 years as a grocer, he continued to work as a semi-retiree, for Moore Wholesale Grocery in Altus and owned and managed a number of affordable housing units. He retired in 1983 and devoted more time to his avocations, golfing, fishing, gardening and spoiling his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In a letter to his 1937 high school class at their 50th alumni celebration he wrote: "Our four children have made our life complete." He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Geraldine; a sister, Hazel Dickerson; and two brothers, Paul and james Metcalf. She was president and state president of the Greer County Farm Women's Club, a long time member of the Methodist Church of Mangum and Granite and served as president of United Methodist Women. Pate, 53, passed away Tuesday at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church of Hollis, with Rev. Dee Willis and Bob Garton officiating. Burial will follow at the Fairmount Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Stewart Funeral Service. He was born Sept. 29, 1947 in Altus to Al and Maybelle Pate. After graduating from Duke High School in 1965, he attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University, where he majored in accounting. He married Vickie Hamilton in 1968 and they had two children, Craig and Kristi. After college he worked in many company management positions. He eventually became materials manager at Viskase in Centerville, Iowa. After living in Centerville for 12 years, he retired and moved to Hollis. He was member of the Methodist Church, president of Appanoose County Railroad Board, and served in the National Guard for nine years. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and spending time with friends at the Hollis Inn. Survivors include his wife, Vickie of the home; son, Craig Pate of Moore; daughter, Kristi Pate of Stillwater; sister Alene and husband Bob Macaulay of Weatherford; mother, Maybelle Pate,; mother-in-law, Billie Jo Hamilton; five sisters-in-law, Jan and husband Rodney Hale of Hollis, Susie and husband Brent Cummins, of Altus, Kim Ward and Tony Romero of Tucson, Ariz., Carla and husband Bret Mason and Tonia and husband Karl Von Luhrte all of Anchorage, Alaska; five nephews and two nieces. They had three sons. He husband died on Dec. 1, 1983. She married Edward Frederick Propp. She was a homemaker and a school bus monitor for special needs children. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Moose Lodge Women's Club and the Sigma Phi Gamma. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Bob; a and a son-in-law, larry Dowling. Williams Cecil Ophelia Williams, 82, died Saturday, July 14, 2001, in Wichita Falls, Texas. She was born February 19, 1919, in Topeka, Kansas. Mrs. Williams was the former owner and operator of the A&W Root Beer Drive-in located in Altus. They moved to Kent, Iowa in 1929 and then to Lawton in 1931. While in high school he was active in FFA, basketball, baseball and rodeo events. He was a member of the 1961 Granite Panther baseball team that were state champions. He received the State Farmer Degree in FFA during his senior year. He obtained a bachelors degree in Animal Science and a masters degree in Education from Oklahoma State University. He taught school in Blair, Martha where he also coached basketball and baseball. He also taught at Lakeside and Lubbock, Texas. He taught science at the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. He became a Farm Bureau insurance agent and became the agency manager of the firm at Purcell. He was involved in baseball his entire life and coached his son Brad from t-ball through American Legion baseball. He was an avid OSU and New York Yankee baseball fan. He was a collector of OSU memorabilia of past players like Barry Sanders and also collected signatures of famous recording artists like Reba McIntire. He was a lifetime member of the OSU alumni and a supporter of the OSU POSSE Club. He was a member of the Granite Lions Club before joining the Purcell Lions Club in 1992. He served as president for Purcell Lions Club. He was president of the Purcell Chamber of Commerce, a member of the McClain County Farm Bureau Board and this year's president of the Purcell Public School Foundation. He was active with the Trinity United Methodist in Purcell where he served in many positions and on many committees. He married Julia (Judy) Jones on Oct. 12, 1946 at his parents house in Gould. He was an avid sports fan and a fan of the University of Oklahoma. He umpired baseball games in Harmon County and was a farmer all his life. He was a retired volunteer firefighter, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and was a member of the Gould Methodist Church. His hobbies including watching his grandchildren play baseball and show livestock at the livestock shows.
