During the time Mr. Peterson headed the Altus school system, enrollment more than quadrupled, reaching an all-time peak of 6,000 students while he was superintendent. Thirty-five new and additions to buildings were made while he headed the schools and the school district was left free of any bonded indebtedness at the time of his resignation and retirement. During his 45 years with the Altus schools, he was elementary principal, junior high principal, high school principal and in 1948 was named superintendent and was president of Altus Junior College from 1948-1967. Active in all facets of educational betterment, he was a life member of the Oklahoma Education Association, National Educational Association, Oklahoma and National Association of School Administrators and life member of the Oklahoma Congress of Parents and Teachers. He often represented the state association at national conferences. He served as president of the Altus Rotary Club in which he held a membership from 1939 to 1973 and was President of the Altus Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Altus since 1933 and served as teacher, General Superintendent of Sunday School and department superintendent for 30 years. As a teacher and lay leader, he worked with all church groups for the good of the youth of this area. His achievements as superintendent of Altus schools and president of Altus Junior College brought state and national recognition to Peterson; many of the published articles in connection with new programs, school achievements and for his administrative ability. Such articles and stories appeared in such national publications as National Schools, as well as the Oklahoma Teacher, Oklahoma Parent-Teacher and Daily Oklahoman. Likewise television stations in Oklahoma City, Lawton and Wichita Falls gave recognition to his leadership and accomplishments. Among the trophies and recognitions he received in his long career as educational, civic and church leader, one of his most prized was given by the Board of Education May 25, 1973 at the time of his retirement which reads "In Appreciation of Clifford Peterson for years of leadership, guidance and foresight as Altus School Superintendent and administrator 1934-1973." The Altus school cafetorium is named in his recognition as is the school auditorium for his deceased wife, Eula B. Peterson, who likewise made a record for herself in church and in educational circles. Peterson later married Edris Abernathy Starkey, likewise a native of southwestern Oklahoma, the daughter of the former Dr. and Mrs. E.A. Abernathy. She too was active in musical, social, church and civic programs throughout her life. She also preceded him in death. Throughout his career, and despite the time consuming leadership given to administration, he will always be remembered for the personal interest he showed in each teacher and each student from grade one for the remaining years of their lives. His home was often a refuge for students with any type problems they might be facing. It was through his personal contact and the admiration that students had for him, that gave him the opportunity to encourage many who otherwise may never attended college or to have completed their higher education fields in business and professions. His gifted ability to assign a task and show confidence in the ability of each faculty member and those in all areas of employment gave them a sense of confidence and a desire to do their best.
