Local arrangements are under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Graves Pearl G. Graves, 92, died Sept. 24, 2002 at Good Samaritan Center in Hobart. Services were held Monday at the Church of God in Christ at 2 p.m. in Hobart with Rev. Elder R. Atkinson and Elder Dana M. Rhodes officiating. Burial was at the Riverside Cemetery, Mangum. Arrangements were under the direction of Greer Funeral Home, Mangum. She was born on December 12, 1909 in Texas to S. Davis and Lela Marcy. She married J. C. Graves in Mangum in 1977. Her husband preceded her in death on March 24, 1997. She was a member of the Church of God in Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and son Theoplus Ware. She is survived by sister Clarlece Calloway, Lawton; niece Otistine Koontzy, Carmichael, Calif.; and a close friend, Felicia Rhodes, Hobart. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jenkins James Leo Jenkins, 84, died at his home on Sept. 27, following a short illness. Service will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Mangum with Rev. J.V. Lobaugh and Dr. Forrest Mickey Byrd officiating. Burial will follow at the Roselawn Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Greer Funeral Home, Mangum. He was known to family and friends as "Leo". He was born September 8, 1918 in Reed. He served his country in the Army during World War II. He was married to Naomi Lee "Sally" Gray on December 6, 1942 in Mangum. She preceded him in death on November 23, 1996. They made their home on the farm east of Mangum and he worked for J. Ray Baker at the John Deere dealership for over thirty years. He was a member of the Baptist Church, the Oklahoma National Guard Company M 179th Inf., the Elks Lodge, American Legion, Woodmen of the World, and he had been a member of the Cityview School Board from 1957 until 1961. He was involved in Little League Baseball for a number of years and also on the Lake Patrol at Lake Altus. He always made a large vegetable garden, which he enjoyed sharing with others. He is survived by his children Jackie Ross Jenkins, Mangum; Dr. Cathearine Jenkins-Hall, Capistrano Beach, California and Sharon Williams, Brookshire, Texas; sister Agnes Byrd, Lubbock, Texas; seven grandchildren, Kevin, Joshua, Phillip, Tony, Shelly Shane and Shawn; ten great-grandchildren, Heath, Elissa, Jared, Tyler, Cody, Tanya, Lindsey, Kayley, Jonathan and Pacen. Graveside services will be Thursday, at 2 p.m. at Gould Cemetery. He was born May 17, 2002 at Southwest Medical Center in Oklahoma City to Robert Thad and Melissa Dawn Pope Smith. He died Sept. 29 at Childrens Hospital in Oklahoma City. A memorial service in honor of Brian Bradley Thurmond will be held at a later date under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. He is survived by his mother Kristie Thurmond of Elmer; grandparents Keith and Jane Thurmond, Elmer; great-grandfather Harrison Thurmond, Elmer; great- grandmother Nolda Bonds, Elmer; uncle Brian Keith Thurmond, Elmer; aunt Gussie Defoor, Elmer; 3 cousins and a host of other relatives. He was preceded in death by great-grandmother Etoy Thurmond and great- grandfather Buck Bonds. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OCT. 2, 2002 Carter Mary Inez McDaniel Carter, 98, died Monday at Harmon Memorial Hospital in Hollis. Services will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday at Stewart Funeral Chapel with burial to follow at McKnight Cemetery. She was born July 14, 1904 to John Perry and Maggie Elizabeth Troxell McDaniel, Mullen, Texas. The family moved to this area in 1906 with the women and children coming by train, and the men brining household goods and supplies by wagons. She attended school at O.M. and Sypert Hill. She married Pink Carter January 14, 1922 in Hollis. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hollis and enjoyed outside work and farming. She is survived by one son Lyndon Carter and wife Joan of Navarre, Fla.; one granddaughter Lynette, Dallas, Texas; and three grandsons; Lynn and David, both of Calif., and Kenney of Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband Pink in 1995, and one son Glen in 1984. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sirmons OCT. 3: Ruby Mae Sirmons died Tuesday at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Graveside services for Ruby Mae Sirmons, 80, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Fairlawn Cemetery, Snyder, with Pastor Keith Gillham, First Baptist Church, Sentinel, officiating. Burial will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home of Snyder. She ws born July 23, 1922 in Electra, Texas to Virgil E. and Rosa Welch Pringle. She married Oran Andrew Sirmons on May 8, 1940 in Burkburnett, Texas. He died August 21, 1991. She was a Sweet Loving Homemaker and Mother. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Duke. Services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday at First United Methodist Church, Stillwater. Burial will follow at the Fairlawn Cemetery, Stillwater. Arrangements are under the direction of Strode Funeral Home, Stillwater. He was born Dec. 7, 1924 in Hollis to Thomas "Callie" and Bessie Lee (Holt) Barefoot. He married Betty Darlene Wurth on Jan. 13, 1952 in Shawnee. He grew up in Hollis, where he graduated from high school in 1943. After graduating he enlisted in the US Air Corps as an aviation cadet and served overseas in the South Pacific. He graduated as a First Lieutenant and was a navigator on B-29's. He was awarded the Air medal with two clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After being discharged, he attended Oklahoma A & M for three years as an engineering student. He was recalled to active duty in the Air Force from April 1951 to 1952, serving in the Korean War. He graduated from OSU with a BS degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1953 and a Masters degree in 1968. He was a Superintendent of Irrigation Research Station in Altus for 10 years. He returned to Stillwater in 1964 to teach and do research at OSU. He served at OSU as an Assistant Professor from 1969-1978 and Associate Professor from 1978 until retirement in 1986. He was also a Student Advisor during this time. He was a professional engineer and did some consulting. He received the Twenty- five Years Service Award from the Division of Engineering, Technology and Architecture of OSU in October of 1978 and the Twenty-Five Years Membership Award from the American Society of Agricultural Engineers in 1979. He also had articles published in several publications throughout his career. He and his wife loved to travel in their RV and be with their friends in Cowboy Country Sams. He was an avid OSU fan and attended all sporting events. He was a member of the First Methodist Church. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in Oklahoma. He was also a member of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, through which he served on the National Student Affiliate Clubs Committee, was chairman of the Student Activities Committee at the 1974 National Meetings, and served onto Southwest Region Honors and Awards Committee of which he was Chairman in 1977. He was also a member of Cowboy country Sams and an annual judge at the State FFA and 4-H Club contests. He moved to Hollis from Children's Center in Oklahoma City in August. He attended 2nd grade at Hollis Elementary. Haley, 96, long-time Altus resident, died Sunday at the Plantation Village Nursing Home. Funeral services are pending with Kincannon Funeral Home. Martinez Alfonso B. Martinez, 79, died Saturday. Graveside services, under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, were held this afternoon at the Altus City Cemetery. He was born in Mexico City, Mexico in 1923. He was a resident of Lubbock, Texas before moving to the Altus area. He was a longtime custodian at the Southwest Community Action Center; just recently entering retirement. He was preceded in death by his wife Margarita and his parents. Visitation will be held in Joplin, Mo. this evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at Thornhill Dillion Mortuary, Joplin, Mo. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, at the Altus Cemetery at 10 a.m. with Doug Burr officiating. She was born to James Edgar and Nettie Ola (McSpadden) Baucum in Altus on July 23, 1909. She graduated from Altus High School and also attended business college in Altus. While in Altus, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church. In 1936, she married the late Virgle L. Wright in Frederick. From this marriage two daughters were born, Sue S. Donahoe and husband Tom Muckogee and Judy S. Wright, Joplin, Mo. Other survivors include six grandchildren; ten great- grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren; one nephew, Richard B. Thompson and wife Becky, Broken Arrow; two sister-in-laws, Kathryn Baucum (wife of the late Jack Baucum, Altus) and Marj Baucum (wife of the late James Baucum), Abilene, Texas; a niece, Barbara Votruba and husband Bob, Abilene, Texas; and a number of cousins. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Haley OCT. 8: Leona E. Haley, 96, long-time Altus resident, died Sunday at the Plantation Village Nursing Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday in the Memorial Chapel at Kincannon Funeral Home with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Burial will follow at the Restlawn Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home. She was born August 11, 1906 near Durant at Matoy to Baxter Garland and Miranda Francis (Bean) Gray. Leona was the 4th of 7 children. She accepted Christ as her Savior at age twelve and joined the Presbyterian church where Brother Hodgekins was pastor. She lived in Bryan County untill the Fall of 1927. The Gray family moved west to get work. They located 13 miles southeast of Altus at Humphries. On October 28, 1933, she was united in marriage to Joe B. Haley at Humphries Baptist Pasonage by pastor J.D. Rogers. To this union, one son was born, Wiltsie Joe Haley on May 22, 1939. They moved to Altus in December of 1944 after buying their first home. She started attending First Baptist Church of Altus in January of 1945. She joined the church on Easter Sunday, and Wiltsie Joe accepted Christ as his Savior on the same morning and was baptized that evening. She is a member of the Ruth and Miriam Sunday School classes and the Sanctuary Choir. She was a homemaker until 1962 when she started work in the school system as a cook. She retired from Sunset Elementary school at age 75. She enjoyed all kinds of needlework. She pieced, quilted, and worked on over 300 quilts. She retired from quilting at 85. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Joe; son Wiltsie Joe; brothers Bill, George, Garland, Lee and Robbie; sister Lottie Cummings; and adopted sister Bessie Mae (Kenmore-Gray) Wilson. She is survivied by daughter- in-law Jeannie Haley of Vicksburg, Miss.; gradchildren Melissa Lynn (Haley) Kizer and Matthew Lamar Haley, both of Okla. City, Amanda Brooke Haley, David Blake Haley and Richard Brett Haley, all of Vicksburg, Miss.; great- grandchildren Haylie Haley and Matthew Lamar Haley Jr., both of Okla. She was at home with family. Oneita was a devoted wife and loving mother who loved visiting with her family and friends. She attended East Side Baptist Church. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Thursday at East Side Baptist Church in Marlow, with Rev. Jerry Couch, Rev. Larry Hatfield and Rev. Gene Jorgenson officiating. Burial will be at Marlow Cemetery under the direction of Callaway- Smith-Cobb Funeral Home in Marlow. She lived in Oklahoma all of her life, living fifty-eight years in Marlow and twenty years in Olustee. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dillard B. She married Bob Lane on July 30, 1993 in Olustee. She was employed as a Registered Nurse for over twenty-four years, most recently at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. She loved boating, fishing, gardening, and most of all, spending time with her family and grandchildren. She was a member of the Glad Tidings Assembly of God in Altus. She was preceded in death by her father Bob Henson. Services are under the direction of Stewart Funeral Service. She was born Jan. 28, 1911 to Henry Morris Wylie and Anna Elizabeth Parkey Wylie in Jester. She married L.J. (Bill) Tillman on Dec. 24, 1932 in Sayre. She graduated from Vinson High School in 1929 and was an active alumni member. She was a housewife, mother, and had a beauty shop in her home for several years. She was a member of the Church of Christ and was a member of the EHU Club for 60 years. She enjoyed 4-H club and helping children in FHA and FFA. She is survived by two sons, Wilbur Tillman and his wife Barbara, Vinson, and Bobby Tillman and his wife Casey, Liberal, Kan.; daughter Marjorie Cockrell and her husband Jerry, Shell Knob, Mo.; seven grandchildren, nineteen great- grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren; and one brother James A. Burial followed services in the St. Margarets Parrish Cemetery in Rolfe, Iowa. Kincannon Funeral Home was in charge of the local arrangements. She was born Oct. 30, 1913 in Manning, Iowa to Fritz and Bertha (Steen) Schmidt. She attended school in Manning, Iowa. She married Harold G. Calligan on April 17, 1941 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Three sons were born to this union. She was a long time member of St. Margarets Catholic Church in Rolfe, Iowa. She was a homemaker, an avid bridge player, a gardener and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harold in 1973; two sisters and one brother. He was an auctioneer, a licensed insurance agent, and found his niche in real estate. He was a licensed real estate broker and certified property manager, owning and operating his own company in Oklahoma City for over 30 years, until he retired two years ago. Woodrow worked as a civil engineer for the Bureau of Reclamation and the family moved throughout the southwest United States, eventually settling in Arvada, Colo. in the 1960's where they remained until returning to Altus in 1990. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Arvada. She sold Avon Cosmetics for more than 18 years. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, her parents, three brothers, one sister and one grandson. She is survived by her husband Woodrow J. He interned at St. Joseph's Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas and practiced a short time in Chickasha and Tipton before moving to Altus in 1955. He was a co-founder of Altus Medical and Surgical Clinic where he practiced medicine for 31 years. He was a member of the American Academy of Family Practice, American Medical Association and Oklahoma State Medical Association. In 1970 he was selected to the Oklahoma Athletic Hall of Fame Board of Electors. In 1974, he was named "Coach of the Week" at Altus High School, where served as Bulldog Physician for 16 years in the 1980's. He was honored as a "Living Legend" by the museum of the Western Prairie in Altus for his involvement with young athletes and as a humanitarian. In 1991, he was inducted to the Jackson County Sports Hall of Fame. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Family Life Center. He served in the Oklahoma National Guard 45th Infantry and served in the Korea Conflict from 1950 to 1952. He belonged to the Elks Lodge in Altus. He was a member of Davis Chamber of Commerce. He served as City Councilman and Mayor of Davis from 1971 to 1977. He was one of the founders and former president of Davis Quarterback Club. He owned and operated Deen's Cleaners for 27 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and two grandchildren. She lived and worked as a nurse in Harmon County for many years. She also worked in Altus and Childress when she was needed as a special duty nurse. He was born May 24, 1960 in La Puente, Calif., to Stanley and Betty (Scott) Lamb. He moved with family to Santa Fe, N.M. until 1971 when they moved to Sayre. He attended Erick and Sayre School before graduating from Olustee High School in 1978. He continued his education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University where he received his Masters degree in Education/Commercial Art. He began his career as an Art instructor in 1986 at Lawton High. He later taught at Altus Middle School and most recently at Sayre Schools. He was a member of the Trinity Fellowship in Sayre. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, a brother, Gary Don Lamb. He is survived by his parents, Stanely and Betty Lamb, Sayre; three brothers, Joe Lynn Lamb, El Reno, LaMar Lamb, Sayre, and Gregory Lamb; and three children, Jonathon Lamb, Weatherford, Tara Dawn and Nicole Marie Lamb, both of Altus; and by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of relatives and friends. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Musgrove Lenora Kruska Musgrove died at Plantation Nursing Home Tuesday, after an extended battle with cancer. She was born on the Kruska Family farm, south of Granite, on August 26, 1912, to John and Rosa Kruska. She attended school at Liberty and spent her high school years at Chorpus Christi, Texas. She graduated from business school and moved back to Okla. and worked at Altus Air Force Base. During and following World War II, Lenora worked at Tinker Air Force Base in Okla. City. She met her husband, L.H. "Blackie" Musgrove, at Tinker, and they were married on Sept. 19, 1950 in Okla. City. In 1947, she began working at the Okla. Tax Commission in the Motor Fuels Division. At the Commission, she worked in various positions for 27 years until her retirement in 1974. In Okla. City, she was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and AARP. Her hobbies were bowling, playing bridge, and gardening. In July 2001, she moved to Altus to be near her family. She resided at Tamarack Retirement Center until Sept. 2002 when she moved to Plantation Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; brothers, J.C. Kruska and O.C. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery. Arrangements are with Greer Funeral Home in Mangum. She was born January 10, 1919 in Clay County, Tennessee to Gilbert Fletcher and Elsis Zachary Fletcher. She moved with her family to a farm near Granite in 1926, where the family lived for several years. They then moved to the Old Midway School area near Byrd Mountain. She graduated from there in 1939 as Valedictorian of her class. She married Leon Call on July 6, 1940 at Hobart. She and Leon lived the rest of their lives in Greer County, except for two years when they moved to Kansas. She worked as a nurse while in Kansas. After coming back to Mangum in 1954, she worked at the M. E. Moses store for three years. In 1964, she went to work for United Super Market and worked there for 20 years when she retired to become a homemaker, to do volunteer work for her church and worked part time at the Mangum Star. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She had joined the First United Methodist Church in 1971. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Carolyn in 1990, and a brother, Norman in 2002. She was born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1910 into a family of six children. Her father Rev. G.W. Bryant, moved the family to West Texas, where she met and married Marion Carpenter. During her late teens, Foy sang in the church choir. Her talents came to the attention of the famous Stamps quartet, who asked her join their gospel tour. Foy chose to stay at home and devote her life to her church and her family. The Carpenters have lived in Portsmouth since 1997. Other than her husband Marion, Foy leaves her son Wayne and his wife Norma of Atlanta; her daughter Jane Lapriore and husband Jerry of Portsmouth; and her son-in-law Ron Wilcox of Dallas. They raised their family and resided in Miller. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the church choir, the Miller choral group "Dreamers", and the Order of the Eastern Star Crescent Chapter No. 4. She participated in numerous card clubs, and Tops. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed crafts, especially cross-stitch. He had made his home in the hill country of Boerne, Texas and had been the president of the Texas Recreational Vehicle Association and San Antonio TRVA. Services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday at First Church of the Nazarene, Poteau with Rev. Richard Dickinson and Rev. Jim Cook officiating. Burial will following at Oakland Cemetery, Poteau. The family will visit with relatives and friends at Evans & Miller Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau. She was born on July 13, 1923. She was self employed in real estate in Poteau. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Poteau. She was an active member of the Poteau High School Alumni Association. She was the founder of the LeFlore County Humane Society. She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard Marsh, parents M.P. and Mammie Qualls, brothers Harwood Qualls and Morris Qualls and sister Nora Helen Qualls. She is survived by son Jim and wife Kay Marsh, Poteau; grandsons Jay and wife Katrina Marshal, Bixby, and Joey Marsh, Poteau; granddaughters Jennifer Marsh, Altus, and Jill and husband Michael Moss, Van Buren, Arkansas; great- grandchildren Krisie Marsh, Abbi, Tori, and Mason Marsh; nieces and nephews Jerry Qualls, M. H. Qualls, Barbara Smith, Wanda Smith, Sherry Knight, and Judy Nash. She is also survived by other relatives and loved ones and a host of beloved friends.
