All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery--Bakersfield CA Gentry, Lola Services will be held on Monday, April 10th at 2:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park Chapel, 9101 Kern Canyon Rd., Bakersfield, for Lola Gentry, 92, who passed away April 3, 2006. Lola was born August 29, 1913 in McKinney, Texas to Wesley and Lorena Williams. Later, the family moved to Altus, Oklahoma where Lola attended school at Martha and eventually met the love of her life, Luther "Dee" Gentry. They married on July 1, 1931 in Mangum, Oklahoma. Having endured the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl of the Great Plains, in 1939 they moved to California, eventually settling in Bakersfield where they lived from 1940 until the present. Lola and Dee were active in square dancing, supporting their sons in athletics and education and helping improve the lives of others. Their loving home was always the center of family gatherings. Lola, as did Dee before his passing, led a life marked by boundless warmth and gentleness, care for others and dignity wrought by hard work and personal sacrifice. Lola's legacy is one of grace, infinite kindness and love for family, especially for "my three boys." Lola was active in the Pairs & Spares Senior Adult Club, Rosedale Grange #0565, Pipe & Steam Fitters Local 460 Ladies Auxiliary, California State Old Time Fiddlers Association and VFW Ladies Aux. 6601. She was a longtime member of Valley Baptist Church and an election precinct volunteer for many years. Lola was also a Rasmussen Senior Center volunteer and participated in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) as well. Lola's compassion for others was evidenced by the fact that she devoted over 1500 hours as a volunteer at Porterville State Hospital. Lola especially loved playing guitar with her dear friends in The Pals Band which entertained for many years at Sr. Citizens Halls, hospitals, churches and rest homes. Lola Gentry was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Dee. Others preceding her include 3 brothers, W.E., Lawrence and Ed as well as a sister, Ruth and one grandson, Chris. Survivors include 3 sons and their mates: Arvel and Pat of Bellevue, Washington; Bob and Mary of Torrance, California; and Glen and Kathy of Mountain View, California. Among other survivors are: sisters, Leatha Long of Bakersfield and Neva King of Altus, Oklahoma. Lola is also survived by six grandchildren: Kevin, Pam, Cheryl, Laura, Jeff and Kim; four great-grandchildren: Michael, Jessica, Haley and Katelyn; one great-great- grandaughter, Marissa as well as Linda and Keith Barbour of Bakersfield plus many nieces, nephews and countless special friends. While Lola will be missed immeasurably, she will live forever in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, remembrance contributions are invited to The Senior Alliance of Rasmussen Senior Center, 115 E. Roberts Lane, Bakersfield, CA 93308 in memory of Lola Gentry.
