Hartwell Services for Walter H. Hartwell, 81, Davis will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 14 at the Chickasaw Trail Baptist Church with Pastor Eldon Archer officiating. Interment will be at Ft. Sill National Cemetery in Elgin with Krien Funeral Home of Davis in charge of arrangements. Born November 13, 1924 in Elmer to Charles Dale and Vernetta (Cantwell) Hartwell, he died Monday, Sept. 11 in Ardmore. He grew up and attended school in Elmer. He enlisted into the U.S. Army at the age of 18 and served during World War II at Normandy and in the Rhineland Campaigns. He earned five Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. After military service he married Martha Adams and the couple had six children. In 1986, he moved from Moore to Davis where he worked as a welder for the Phelps Dodge Co. On August 20, 1999, he married Naomi Sue Harris-Chesser in Shawnee. Fishing was his favorite pastime. He was a member of the Chickasaw Trail Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Dennis Adams and wife, Kay, Safford, Ariz. and Walter "Bo" Haskell Hartwell, Jr. of Arizona; three daughters, Kathy Sniffin and husband, Michael, Tuscan, Ariz., Maybelle Hartwell, Wellington, Kan. and Mary Long of Wichita, Kan.; two step sons, Terry Chesser, Edmond and Randy Chesser and his wife, Stephanie, McLoud; two sisters, Beatrice Ferguson, South Carolina and Mary Gibbons of Georgia; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Chesser, Shawnee and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Connie Adams; a stepson, Lynn Chesser; a brother, Charlie Hartwell and two sisters, Grace Thomas and Gearldine Hartwell. Pallbearers were John Thomas, Bob Thomas, Mark Rimer, Randy Chesser and Terry Chesser. David Thomas and Fred Norell served as honorary bearers.
