Jones, 96, of Canyon, died Tuesday, June 8, 1999. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Brooks Funeral Home Chapel in Canyon with the Rev. Kevin Deckard and Pat Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery. Mr. Jones was born in Hess, Okla., and was raised in Altus, Okla. In 1929, he graduated from West Texas State Teachers College. He taught in Dalhart, Jumbo and Hart and worked as a carpenter-cabinet maker. In 1942, he joined the Navy and served during World War II in Company A, 23rd Construction Battalion (Seabees) in Hawaii and the Aleutians. After the war, Mr. Jones taught English at Hereford Junior High and started building boats. He earned his master's degree from WT in 1955. In 1967, he retired from teaching but continued to work as a cabinet maker. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Canyon. Survivors include two nephews, Dr. Mitchell Jones of Amarillo and Dr. Marshall Jones of Tucson, Ariz.; eight grand nieces and nephews; and 11 great-grand nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials be to First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1818 Fourth Ave., Canyon, TX 79015; or Dreamland Cemetery, P.O. Box 38, Canyon, TX 79015.
