Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Christian Church in Miami with the Rev. Kevin Hollowell of Winnsboro and George Lundberg of Miami officiating. Burial will be in Miami Cemetery with full military honors by Altus Air Force Base, Altus, Okla. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Pampa. Mr. Thompson was born Nov. 14, 1920, in Roberts County on the Price Ranch. He was the oldest child of Ruben E. and Viva M. Thompson. He graduated from Miami High School in May 1938 and entered Texas A&M the following fall. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in May 1942. He was commissioned into the Air Force as a second lieutenant, serving four years as a munitions officer during World War II. His primary job was to make target analysis and determine the time and tonnage of bombs which were dropped over Japan. He was promoted to major during his active duty and received great satisfaction from having served his country. He continued his military career in the Air Force Reserves, retiring in 1980 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He returned home to Miami after World War II and engaged in the farm and ranch operations until 1948. In 1949 he purchased the Co-Op Hardware Appliance business and operated it as Thompson Farm and Home Supply until his retirement in 1980. During this time he was an active member of the community, serving 12 years on the Miami school board, part of that time spent as president. He served four years on the city council, was president of Men's Service Club, worshipful master of the Masonic Lodge and served 37 years as an active elder in First Christian Church. He served as county chairman of the Boy Scout Drive, a 42-year member of American Legion, a member of Chamber of Commerce and rental housing authority, and held various jobs on Roberts County Livestock Board. He served as the Veteran's County Service officer for many years. Of his and his wife's lives, he said, "Our life's goals we feel have been essentially accomplished. We thank the good Lord for all his blessings. We are grateful for friends, neighbors and family." Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, Dr. Paul E. Thompson and wife, Margot, of Omaha, Neb., and Alan "Butch" Thompson and wife, Kay, of Miami; a daughter, Deborah "Debbie" Hawkins and husband, Don, of The Woodlands; a sister, Lorene Paris and husband, J.D., of Miami; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of friends and other relatives. The family suggests memorials be to First Christian Church, 201 Tascosa St., Miami, TX 79059; American Cancer Society, BSA Hospice, 800 S. Sumner St., Pampa, TX 79065; or a favorite charity.
