She was 91 years of age. Dorothy was born on January 21, 1915, to Wilburn A. and Mira A. Brisbin in Olustee, Oklahoma. She was one of seven children which included five brothers and one sister. After high school, she attended Oklahoma College for Women (O.C.W.), graduating in 1940 with a B.S. degree in Commerce and a teaching certificate. She also attended Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College on scholarship and received a supplemental teaching certificate to teach high school English. While attending college, she worked to support herself and pay for tuition during the difficult years of the Depression. As a reporter on her college newspaper, The O.C.W. Trend, Dorothy began what would become a lifelong passion and hobby. She has left behind many wonderful short stories and poems, none more memorable than "Our Wedding", the story of her courtship and marriage, on January 3, 1943, to Cecil Albert Southall, her beloved husband of nearly 60 years. Dorothy was a much loved teacher in California and Oklahoma for 17 years, a talented painter, and a member of the Madera Art Guild. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing and playing the piano. She was a loving and dedicated member of Madera's Sunset Avenue Church of Christ, always ready, with Cecil, to visit the sick or shut-ins. Her lemon meringue pies were a favorite at church potlucks. Dorothy will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her husband Cecil preceded her in death in 2002. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Annette and Jeff Williams, Randy and Della Southall, Larry and Janet Southall, and Karen Southall Korwin; her sister, Mary Lorena Shea; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Visitation will be held at Jay Chapel in Madera on Tuesday, October 17, 2006, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Wednesday, October 18, 2006, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. There will be a Funeral Service at the Sunset Avenue Church of Christ, 600 Orchard Ave., Madera, on Wednesday, October 18, 2006, at 12:00 p.m. A Graveside Service will follow at Arbor Vitae Cemetery.
