All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Originally posted at: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/CaB.2ACI/751 The Ringling Eagle Ringling, Jefferson County, Oklahoma December 11, 1930 One Dead; Two Wounded in Wirt Gun Battle DEPUTY SHEIRFF CCON KIERSEY is dead and UNDERSHERIFF VERNON CASON is in an Ardmore hospital in a critical condition as the result of a shooting affair which took place about 5:30 Wednesday evening at a private residence on the Sinclair Oil company lease about one half miles north of the Wirt Methodist Church. Having been given a tip that a stolen car was in that section, Kiersey and Cason went to the residence on the lease and Kiersey went in to make inquiry as to the owner of the car parked in front of the house. On entering the house and asking who the car belonged to, one man replied said that it was his and another placed two guns on Kiersey with the statement, 'I'll just kill you,' in a very loud and gruff voice. Cason who had remained in the officers' car heard the bitter words and entered the house. He entered with his gun drawn and the shooting started. Kiersey and Cason, both shot in the face and neck. After going by way of Healdton and reporting the affair, they were taken to the hospital in Ardmore where Kiersey died and Cason is in critical condition.
