D. THOMPSON of Ryan, manager of the county demonstration farm for the state board of agriculture, was in town Monday in the interest of Jefferson County's exhibit at the state fair to be held in Oklahoma City beginning on the 27th of this month. Protracted Meeting A protracted meeting began at the Methodist church Sunday. REV. F. R. WELCH, pastor of the church at Lindsay, came Monday to assist in the meeting. A. QUICKLE of northwest of town went to Lawton Monday to attend the school land sale. J. ROCHE of Claypool was in town and dressed himself up with a new Racine wagon at the DUNKIN WALKER hardware store. MRS. W. J. STOWE and sons, RUSSELL and TEDDY, left yesterday for Arkansas where they will reside in the future. W. J. and LESLIE will follow about Christmas. MISS BERNICE DULANEY of Cornish who has been in town visiting MISS ALMA SUTHERLAND left for her home Wednesday. Public School Begins Monday Following is the personnel of the faculty for the coming term: PROF. C. S. STORMS, superintendent; R. E. STIVISON, principal of the high school; MISS GLADYS M. HUNT, high school assistant; MRS. C. S STORMS in charge of the 5th and 6th grades in the high school building while MISS ALETHA DAVIS will have charge of the 3rd and 4th, MISS RUBY HOBBS of the 2nd and MISS SADIE KEBELMAN of the primary departments in the same building. In the Irving building, MISS DELIA PORTER will act as principal and have charge of the 5th and 6th grades; MISS MABEL HOBBS the 3rd and 4th grades, MISS RUTH MCHENRY the 2nd and MISS MARY MOORE RICHARDSON the primary departments. MRS. J. N. JOHNSTON will have charge of the department of vocal and drawing. MRS. J. L. WOOLDRIDGE and MRS. W. W. MORRISON have arranged to have a piano in each building and will give piano lessons. The latter department is not part of the public school, but is a worth enterprise and should receive the encouragement and patronage of the patrons of the school. Carleton Club MISS ALLIE MILNER entertained the Carleton Club Thursday evening from 8:30 to 10:00. Many entertainments were played and the spelling contest proved a great success, MISS GENEVIEVE MUDD and JAMIE DELONG being choosers. MISS GENEVIEVE was champion speller and STANLEY MCCOLLOCH second. No program was rendered at this meeting, but from now on there will be a program committee and songs and readings must be given. The committee appointed fro September as follows: MISS GENEVIEVE MUDD, CHARLES ADAMS, and MARK H. MILNER. Several members were present and visitors were MRS. M. H, MUDD and MISS STELLA MAINE, FRANK HOBBS, JOHN EVANS and LESLIE STOWE. Mr. and Mrs. L. J. TURNELL of Chillicothe, Texas, who have been visiting her mother, MRS. MARY E. BRANDON northeast of town, left Monday for Montague to visit Mrs. Turnell's sister. District Court Is in Session District court opened at Ryan Monday morning and has been grinding away during the week. JUDGE BAILEY is hold a special term of Jefferson District Court at Ryan; the criminal docket is to begin next week including the HORTON murder case. WILLIAM ANDERSON of Oklahoma City, formerly of this city, was a visitor here Monday attending a meeting of the school land lessees of this county. First Monday a Great Day. Band Boys Were Raided On last Friday evening while the band boys were practicing in the city hall, they were surprised by the unannounced appearance of about 15 ladies, members of the Rebekah Lodge, armed with an abundant supply of cake and ice tea and proceeded to entertain the boys for an hours in that hospitable manner for which the goods ladies are famous. The boys did justice to the cake and tea and after refreshments were served, the ladies in turn were treated to some splendid selections of music. Subscription Offer On account of the consolidation of The News and The Democrat, the management of the News-Democrat have decided to extend the proposition formerly made by The News, which expired September 1, for 30 days in order to give The Democrat subscribers an opportunity to get in on the special proposition. M. MOODY and wife of Cement spent last week at the home of her father, A. J. MCLAUGHLIN near town. F MEGGINSON and daughter JEWELL are spending the week at Bellevue, Texas with MRS. C. L. FORD. County Medical Association The Jefferson County Medical Association met at the office of DR. SUTHERLAND Tuesday. In the absence of DR. WILSON, the president, DR. DERR presided over the meeting. Those attending were DR. MOORE and DR. MURPHY of Addington, DR. EWING of Terral, DR. LEWIS of Ryan, DR. DOWNING of Hastings, DR. MAUPIN, DR. ASHINHURST, DR DERR, and DR. SUTHERLAND, all of Waurika. Local News CHARLIE DAILEY is reported to have gone carp fishing on Cow Creek last Friday and reports the usual fisherman's luck. S. T. COTNER and daughter MISS FAE left Wednesday for Marlin, Texas to remain several weeks in the interest of his health. JOE SIMPSON, the veteran newspaper supply man, was a caller at the News- Democrat office. His face looked familiar and we were glad to see him again. D. E HUFFMAN and little daughter left for Arlington, Texas to visit. GALE DURHAM was a Sunday visitor at Comanche. G. F. CLEAVER of near Ryan was in town. HENRY GRESHAM was up from Ryan. W. H. DIVERS was a business visitor to Anadarko. W. P. PURYEAR of Hastings was a visitor here Monday. T. A EDMONDS of Hastings was here Tuesday. J. W. SNYDER of near Hastings was here for First Monday. PROF. R. C. WHITE closed his summer school at Linwood Saturday. T. W. LONDON was attending to business at Ryan. JOHN HEENAN and CHARLES PFILE and wife made an auto trip to Ryan Tuesday. G. M. SUTTON of the Stuard Hotel made a business trip to Hobart. W. F CARPENTER of Monett, Missouri was visiting N. E. NALL and family. WADE ADKINS of Wheeler County, Texas, came in Monday to look after business interests. E. B. JOHNSON, one of Hastings leading business men, was here enroute to Dallas. MRS. S. L. HOLLISTER, MRS. JAMES THOMPSON, and MISS DELIA DIMERY came down from Addington Monday. MRS. PARKER and MRS. GEORGE HUGHES of Ryan were visiting their sister, MRS. J. W. ROBERTS, Saturday and Sunday. County Commissioner ECKLES returned Sunday from a visit to Enid. HON. W. I. GILBERT of Oklahoma City passed through here Monday afternoon on his way to attend district court at Ryan. SWISHER of Oklahoma City was in town Tuesday soliciting funds for the Cornish Orphan Home at Cornish. F. PINE PASCHAL of Hastings, one of the oldest citizens of Jefferson County, is closing out his interests in this county and will soon leave for California where he will make his future home. E. S. HUFFMAN returned Monday to his farm near Hastings after a few days stay with his family. The only thing missing about ELAM on this trip was the hair on his upper lip. N. S. FIGLEY, postmaster at Hastings, was in town Tuesday evening enroute to Guthrie to attend the state convention of postmasters. Mr. Figley called at this office for a short visit. Mr. and Mrs. D. P. STURGEON of Sugden were Waurika visitors Sunday. MISSES WILMA BODENHAMER and RUBY HOBBS were Terral visitors. MISS SADIE KELBEMAN has returned from her summer vacation at Weatherford, Texas. MINIS RAY was in Comanche on business. STUARD DICKEY of Claypool was a visitor Tuesday. G. O. WEBB of Temple was here enroute to Dallas. Addington Our high school began Monday with PROF. W.P. MURPHY at the helm and MISSES MAGGIE BROWN, LILLIAN PAYNE, DELIA DIMERY, and MINNIE SUITOR as assistants. About 100 pupils attended the first day although a very rainy day. J. S. PRICE and wife were doing business in Waurika Monday. MR. RICHARDS' son got a fall from a horse last week, breaking his shoulder. DALLAS MCLEMORE ran a nail in wrist Monday, making a bad place. H. K. PRICE, TOM HARTZOG and MR. KING attended court at Ryan. ED BOND says they had a waterspout on Mud Creek Sunday afternoon. LIGE SPARKS and some boys were driving rapidly down hill when the front axle of the buggy broke, precipitating all three and jarred them badly, but no bones were broken. ED GARRISON accidentally stuck a buckle tongue in hand, making a bad sore. MISS LAUD MCQUIRE and MISS ESSIE MILLER of Oak Clift were visiting in town Monday. BOB COLLINS and family of Fort Worth were guests of J. L. KIETH and family this week. C. L. LEATHERMAN made a flying trip to Electra, Texas looking for oil. The greatest social event of the season was the party given in honor of the 18th birthday of MISS CATHARINE HARTZOG Monday evening at the home of her parents, corner of Purdy and Maple Streets. Among those present were: MISSES CLARA MOORE, ERNESTINE STEELE, LILLIAN PAYNE, CLARA BOHN, JUSTINA JAY, CATHARINE HARTZOG, BESSIE HARTZOG, NORA BROWN, LUCILLE BROWN, SADIE SHELLY, MINNIE SUITOR, NEVA PALMER and Messrs. JOE MITCHELL, TODD PACE, EARL LEATHERMAN, G. HUFFER, JESS CLAYTONG, GUSSIE HOCH, HANIE PACE, ELMER HUFFER, CLAUDE JAY, WILLIE HARTZOG and DR. HARTZOG. The evening was spent in various amusements and innocent games, then a splendid repast of cream and cake was served. Everybody enjoyed the evening until about 10:00 when the crowd dispersed, wishing Miss Catharine many happy days, commending Mr. and Mrs. Hartzog for their hospitality.
