WATKINS, I. ELLIS Improving Depot Grounds A crew of workmen have been to Waurika the past week improving and beautifying the depot grounds. The terrace and parkway around the depot has been set to Bermuda grass and fountains for watering purposes have been attached to the city waterworks. A handsome flower bed lies just east to the north of the building and is receiving the best of care. Waurika boasts of the best passenger station between Fort Worth and Chickasha and has been completed within the year at a cost of $35,000. Waurika has a congenial and efficient crew at the depot and the following is the personnel of the work force: FRED PITMAN is passenger and freight agent; C. M. DEASON is cashier; JOHN WALKER is day baggage man, J. L. WATERS is night ticket clerk and JOHN FOWLER is night baggage man. The Marriage Restrictions A man must see a doctor now before he gets married for this has it been written by the wise ones of the legislature and there is little doubt that the governor will autograph it into the statutes. To marry in Oklahoma, a man must have a certificate from a reputable physician testifying to his good health, sobriety and numerous other qualifications. Lucky it is for many that the law is not retroactive. JOHN POOLE of Annona, Texas is here visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. GARRETSON. PAUL KENDALL spent Sunday in Waurika. Most of our young folks went to the commencement exercises at the Adventist church Thursday night. While raking stalks, EARL JOHNSON's team got affrighted when the rake tongue broke and ran away with him, breaking his right arm and tearing open the radial artery of the left wrist when he was dragged through some grass which was afire, burning him badly. Nine stitches were taken in his wrist and he will recover. He lives about 2 miles west of Madden Grove. JOE HUFFER, president of the Bourland township S. S. spent Sunday in Sugden with the Paterson township S. S. convention and reports a good time. Everybody should be identified with the Sunday School work. W. P. SHORT, aged 63, a pioneer of this county, died Saturday morning at 2:00 of paralysis. He leaves a large family of children and a host of warm friends. He had suffered for 2 years of his malady and is now at rest by the side of his wife who preceded him about 9 years. The children and friends have the sympathy of the entire community. The funeral services were held at the cemetery by Bro. JOE HUFFER, taken from the scripture text 'And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.' MISS MOLLIE WILLIS of Bowie, Texas, sister of MRS. W. C. SAVAGE, visited here last week. MRS. FRANK PARKER visited friends at Hastings. Among the sick this week are T. J. MANIERE, JAMES BLALOCK, JOHNIE WYLEY, and REV. MCKINZIE. Glad to note that TOM MANIRE is convalescing after a spell with fever. CLYDE AYRES of Sugden and C. D. SNYDER of this city have been appointed members of the county election board. Local News L. D. MAJOR was in town from Ryan. HUGH COTNER was over from Cornish. JESS MARLEY was down from Hastings. TOM SMITH was here from Addington. PAUL E. KENDALL of Addington was here Sunday. W. D. FOSSETT was in town Monday greeting old friends. SAM ASH motored to Ardmore last week. MISS LYNNE WEATHERSBY was a Temple visitor. MRS. W. G. TURNAGE was on the sick list. A. D. ALLEN transacted business in Ardmore. PAUL COTNER was down from Chickasha, visiting his mother. STUARD DICKEY and HORACE PORTER were here from Claypool. L. W. TARKENTON was on business in Oklahoma City. Born to Mr. and Mrs. JACK TURNELL on Monday, an eight pound boy. P. R. HELD of Lometa, Texas is visiting his daughter, MRS. W. E. MOREMAN. PERCY WEBB, who has large land holdings near Cornish, was in town. HENRY BRUNER of Oklahoma City was visiting Waurika acquaintances. MRS. D. E. CANTRELL of Hewitt visited relatives here. THOMAS GREEN of El Reno is assisting at the depot during the absence of JOHN WALKER. DEAN CUMMINS returned from a business trip in the eastern part of the state. ELMER EVANS was down from Temple Tuesday and took a few Waurikans out to view the new oil well. JOHN WALKER, day bag gagman at the depot, is off on a two weeks leave of absence and is spending the time with home folk in Texas. MISS LAURA DILLARD of Mountain Grove, Missouri arrived Monday to visit her brother and sister, JOE DILLARD and MRS. C. W. FIGG. MISS LENA KOONS and MISS ALPHA SMITH of Lawton visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. LANG. Judge CECIL SMITH of Sherman and R. S. FULTON of Van Alstine, Texas were in the city Monday. J. W. PARSONS transacted business in Wichita Falls last week. MRS. FRED PITTMAN left Wednesday for Enid to visit her daughter, MRS. A. C. STREETER. DR. C. M. MAUPIN went to Enid Monday to attend a meeting of the State Medical Association. Mr. and Mrs. D. J. HENRY of Bowie, Texas are visiting their son, J.W. and family here. J. M. HUDLOW just returned from Hugo where he went after his daughter, MRS. BEAULAH THURMAN, who is quite ill. C. W. COSTEN went to Snyder visiting kinsfolk and attending to business. Mrs. J. C. WEAVER and children of Addington were guests of Mrs. T. B. WEATHERSBY at the Empress theater Saturday night. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. VANPELT went to Oklahoma City for a short visit with friends. GEORGE GRAVES is here from Norman visiting realties and getting some of the farmers interested in silos. MRS. MAUDE PARKER returned Sunday from Stillwater Minnesota where she attended the funeral of her brother FORREST REHN. MRS. E. D. SESSIONS and children went to Lawton to visit her parents. E. B. ELLIS returned from Tulsa where he attended a meeting of the State Bankers' Association. CHARLES NICKEL of Claude, Texas visited his sister, MRS. J. W. BIFFLE, here whom he had not seen in 11 years. MRS. E. ROBINSON fell from the backstep of her home the other day and received a badly bruised leg. MRS. DERR and daughter MISS CLAUDIA are visiting relatives at Fort Worth. MISS VIRGIE BROWN of Ryan, sister of MRS. C. M. DEASON, is visiting in Waurika and is assisting in the stenographic work at the Jefferson County Abstract Co. Mr. and Mrs. JOE BREDENGARD returned from a month honeymoon trip with relatives and friends in Missouri and Kansas. REV. WILEY arrived form Paris, Texas and has assumed regular duties as pastor of the Christian church. MISS HAZEL JONES of Wichita Falls is visiting her sister, MRS. JIM E. HOWARD. JAY G. CLIFT, county attorney, was in Walter one day this week listening to the evidence in the Stephens Lesney trial. GEORGE CARTER of Corning, Kansas returned Tuesday after visiting here his son, W. F. of the Jefferson County Abstract Co. DR. L. B. SUTHERLAND and daughter, MISS ALMA, MRS. LILLIAM SEWELL, and MISS HATTIE POSTON motored to Hastings to hear REV. YORK preach. J. S. BOOKS, traveling auditor of the Pioneer Telephone Co., has been here since Monday going over the books and checking up the accounts of the local exchange. MISS EDNA BURCH came near losing her eye one night last week when she accidentally gouged a pair of scissors in it. It is dangerously swollen and still in a dangerous condition. W. F. CRTER received word from W. H. GRESHAM, who is in Dallas at the bedside of his sister, stating that she is worse and that hopes of recovery have been given up. MOSS WEAVER, presiding elder of the Chickasha district, occupied the pulpit at the Methodist Church Sunday night and remained over and held quarterly conference Monday. While waiting on Trade Monday at the store, MRS. ED V. PARSON fell and sustained a severely sprained ankle. She was compelled to go home and is still unable to attend to duties at the store. Mr. and Mrs. FRANK BEAUMAN and Mr. and Mrs. R. E. SCHOOLFIELD attended the revival services at Hastings last week conducted by REV. YORK. The party went in Mr. Beauman's new car. SHERIFF BIFFLE was in Ringgold, Texas to search for DOYL MCBRIAN who is wanted on charges in this county. Mr. and Mrs. B. H. MILLER of Oklahoma City spent last Friday in Waurika with her brother, E. D. SESSIONS. They were on their way to Alexandria, Louisiana where Mr. Miller goes to act as secretary of the Louisiana Lumber Company. Word has been received here of the marriage of PAUL A. ROYSTON and MISS TRESSA VANGILDER at Alamosa, Colorado. Mr. Royston at one time resided here and is a brother to MRS. J. L. MORGAN. He has many Waurika friends who wish him all the pleasures of a happy wedded life. W. J. BRIDGES was in from the Melrose community Thursday and reports a several hail and rainstorm Wednesday evening. Quite a bit of damage was done to garden stuff and all field forage was peppered up to some extent. JOE DEANGELIS, solo coronetist of the Fifth Field Artillery Bank stationed at Fort Sill, was in town last Thursday night and assisted the local boys in a concert on the street that night. He, in company with PROF. MONTIN, left for Wichita Falls to assist in a musical program there. Word was received today from JIM REED announcing his marriage to MISS NANNIE MAIN of Sulphur. Mr. Reed is an old resident of this city and has many friends who wish him happiness and success. Mrs. Reed is a niece of H. W. MAIN, who at one time was in the confectionary business here. The ceremony took place in Sulphur Sunday evening and the newly married folks are now residing at their home in Davis, Oklahoma. Mr. and Mrs. O. H. HOWELL chaperoned a crowd of young folks to Hastings last Thursday where they attended preaching services conducted by REV. YORK. They all went on a large moving van and the following composed the crowd; MISSES DIMPLE ADAMS, MABEL VANZANDT, VETA WOOLWINE, OLLIE and JESSIE HUFFMAN, EMMA SUTTON, SALLIE BIFFLE, HATTIE WAYMIRE, and MISS LONGEST with Messrs. J. H. BRIDGES, OTTO HUFFMAN, and EARL MORRIS. W. V. MCCLURE of Route 2 was in town Tuesday on his way to For Wroth where he is making his headquarters for the present and orders his paper so changed.
