All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== Originally posted at: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.oklahoma.counties.jefferson/1234/mb.ashx Waurika News Democrat Waurika, Jefferson Co., Oklahoma Friday, March 6, 1936 Mrs. CHARLES BELL MATTIE STARKS, only daughter of WILLIAM and SUSAN STARKS, was born near Bowling Green, Kentucky February 12, 1867 and departed this life March 2, 1936, age 69 years. She was the last of family to go, three brothers having preceded her in death. When a small child, she moved to north Texas, locating at Bonham, where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage with CHARLES BELL January 12, 1893. Their home was at Bonham, later Honey Grove. In 1907 they moved to Waurika and resided here until 1910 when they moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas. They returned to Waurika in 1927. Aunt Mattie joined the Baptist Church in early life. Having no children of their own, Mrs. Bell was devoted to the children of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. FULLER, Mrs. Fuller having made her home for a good many years with Mrs. Bell's mother, and in later years the Bells spent months at a time in the Fuller home. .. She died from cancer.. Funeral services were held for Mrs. Bell Tuesday afternoon at the Fuller home where the body was brought shortly after death. The services were conducted by Rev. RALPH A. HILL of the Baptist Church, Rev. G. LYLE SMITH of the Christian Church, and Rev. J. O. WHITWORTH of the Methodist Church. Interment was in the Waurika cemetery. Mrs. ALICE ISBELL Mrs. ALICE ISBELL died February 26, 1936 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. F. BAKER, at Soper, following an illness of several years. Funeral services were held Friday at the Church of Christ, conducted by Elder A. LEROY ELKINS, pastor of the Hugo church. Interment was in the Soper cemetery. ALICE FARRIS was born at Whitesboro, Texas March 7, 1863, would have been 73 on her next birthday. She was married to BAILEY ZACHARY ISBELL and to this union eleven children were born, eight of whom survive. They are: Mrs. W. F. BAKER of Soper, Mrs. HENRY BURRES of Smithville, Arkansas, Mrs. EFFIE OVERSTREET of Fort Worth, BAILEY ISBELL of Paducah, Texas, Mrs. JOE D. VANHORN of Boynston, Texas, Mrs. JIM GRAYSON of Ada, Mrs. MARIE LAVALLIE of El Paso, Texas, ZACK ISBELL of Olney. There are three brothers, SI FARRIS of Lane, GEORGE FARRIS of Beeville, Texas, and JOHN FARRIS of Frederick. Mr. Isbell died at Hartshorne in 1904 and following his death, Mrs. Bell brought her family to their farm near Oscar. In 1920 she moved to Waurika, her youngest children MARIE and ZACK with her. In 1925 when Marie and Zack both married, she broke up housekeeping and went to live with her children as her health was breaking. Town Topics Mrs. J. A. RAINER, who returned last week from Los Angeles, California, brought back some interesting news. Miss INEZ POLLOCK, former Waurika girl, is in Los Angeles and Mrs. Rainer visited with her. Miss Inez is a nurse for a four year boy whose family live in a lovely apartment and has one Friday and one weekend off each month. She is taking a secretarial course at night school. More news of COY POY, oldest son of Mrs. A. E. LANDON of Waurika, who is in Hollywood, sold a musical drama last week. Coy has made a name for himself in Hollywood in the writing and musical ends of film production. Mr. and Mrs. P. E. WAID / WADE and her mother, Mrs. D. L. DOWD of St. Jo, Texas, were guests of the Waid's daughter, Mrs. L. M. HEHSTADT. Mr. L. B. MASON of Healdton came to visit her sister Mrs. DICK COLEMAN and family. They both visited their brother JIM LEWIS and family at Oilton where Jim is with the Magnolia Oil and Gas Co., as district superintendent. Mrs. ORA TROLLINGTON, who is in the school land department in Oklahoma City, visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. C JAMESON at Hastings, and with Mrs. FANNIE DAWSON and other friends here. Mrs. ANNIE WISEMAN, who visited her daughter Mrs. JOHN A. ROBERTS and family at Singleton, Texas, came home. Mr. Roberts is in night school for engineering, conducted by his company, Sinclair Oil and Gas, where he has been employed for several years. Mrs. J. R. DOSS and daughter, Mrs. PAUL TOTTY, and PATTY LOU and PAUL JEAN ISBELL of Olney, Texas were in Burkburnett, Texas attending a shower to honor Mrs. Doss' granddaughter, Miss LUCILLE CAMPBELL, who is to marry HERSHEL CECIL of Burkburnett. Courtney Items Mr. and Mrs. J. M. PRUITT and children were at the ARTHUR RAY home. Mrs. RUBY ROGUE and Mrs. C. J. LONGEST visited the H. B. LONGEST home. Cornish Gleanings by W. C. HOGAN JAMES MCINTIRE of Orr cut down a large tree last week, in which he found an iron punch imbedded in the trunk about eight feet from the ground. Friday, March 13, 1936 ERNEST DULANEY Killed by Rock Island Engine ERNEST "SKEET" DULANEY was killed Wednesday night on the Rock Island main line tracks about 100 yards north of D Street, when he was run over by a switch engine. C. E. KESTER, substituting for TOM HARRISON on the local switch engine, was the engineer in charge. JACK GUTHRIDGE was the fireman and W. H. SMITH and MACK EARLE, the switchmen. Dulaney had sat down on the track. Dulaney was an ex-soldier, badly gassed in the service. He was drawing compensation and was employed at a local café as cook and dishwasher. He made his home with his sister, Mrs. SAM JOHNSON, near Addington. He had married one time, but separated from his wife. The former wife and three children lie in Fort Worth. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. E. A. DULANEY of Temple; three brothers, HARVE DULANEY of Ryan, HERBERT DULANEY of Temple and DELL DULANEY of Comanche; six sisters, Mrs. SAM JOHNSON of Waurika, Mrs. CORA KUYKENDALL of Texas, Mrs. BIRDIE ELLIOTT of Wichita Falls, Mrs. JESSIE LATHAM of Loco, Mrs. EDYTH MEDLOCK of Levelland, Texas and Mr. MAUD CAMPBELL of Lubbock, Texas. BERNARD W. ROBINSON A message from Mrs. W. T. SKINNER to the Waurika News Democrat Thursday morning, told the death of her son-in-law, BERNARD W. ROBINSON, who died Tuesday night at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City of double pneumonia. Mrs. Skinner had been to Oklahoma City 10 days, called there by the illness of her daughter, Mrs. Robinson, who had pneumonia. Mr. Robinson was well at that time and Mrs. Robinson was able to be up. BERNARD W. ROBINSON, 29 years old, is survived by his wife and son BERNARD Jr., his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. ROBINSON, a brother GORDON, and a sister Mrs. PAUL YOUNT, all of Oklahoma City, and another sister Mrs. ROY NICHOLS of Muskogee. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the main chapel of Hahn's Funeral Home by Rev. PAUL WRIGHT of Oklahoma City and Rev. A. F. DUKE of Marlow. Mrs. JOHN THOMPSON After years of illness with tuberculosis, Mrs. JOHN THOMPSON died at the family home near Waurika Sunday night, March 8. Funeral services were held at the Sugden cemetery Monday, conducted by Rev. J. O. WHITWORTH. She was born in Arkansas November 8, 1884. There she married CHARLES MILLER. They moved to Waurika 25 years ago and were in business here for some time. Four boys were born to them: JACK who died May 1932, CHARLES of Los Angeles, California, JOHNNIE of Littlefield, Texas, and HARLEY MILLER of Waurika. There are three grandchildren. Seven years ago she married JOHN THOMPSON, helping him in his business until three years ago when she developed tuberculosis and spent months in hospital at Clinton. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Town Topics Mr. and Mrs. CARLOS MONTANDON of Hastings have a new daughter, born Monday, weighing 8 ½ pounds, and named LINDA LOU. Mr. and Mrs. EARL C. MORRIS and sons PAT and DON ROBERT, were at Roswell, New Mexico where their son EARL MORRIS Jr. had an appendicitis operation. Courtney Items Grandpa SMITH, who has been making his home with his daughter Mrs. DOWDLE, has moved to the home of his son W. N. SMITH for an indefinite stay. HAMM had a message last week about the death of her brother, Rev. W. G. JONES of Los Angeles, California, following an operation for appendicitis. Funeral and interment was at El Paso, Texas Saturday. Rev. Jones lived in Cornish several years ago, a veteran of the Spanish-American War. Survivors are WESLEY JONES of Tucson, Arizona, a daughter Mrs. JOE SEWALLY of San Francisco, California, a brother J. B JONES of Ardmore and sister Mrs. Hamm of Ringling. VIRGIL MCLAIN and Miss STELLA SOPER, both of North Center Point, came to Cornish and were married in the presence of friends as witnesses, by W. C. HOGAN. They will make their home at North Center Point, where the groom is farming. Miss CHRISTINE HUTCHINS and TOM BUSSEY and granddaughter COLLEEN of Ryan visited here. Miss Hutchins lived at the Children's Home 18 years ago and this was her first visit back. ALLEN COPELAND of Barterville, California visited his father J. COPELAND and other relatives. Terral Items by Mrs. J. H. PEALOR Mrs. MARY C. BRYANT Mrs. MARY C. BRYANT was born at Amity, Arkansas March 21, 1856 where she grew to young womanhood. She married Z. G. BRYANT in 1873(?) and to them were born five children. She is survived by two daughters, a son and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She joined the Methodist Church, later the Holiness Church. Miss DONNA ELLIFF returned to Fort Sill after being here for the illness and death of her grandmother, Mrs. Bryant. Miss MARY ELLIFF will remain for a longer visit. Friday, March 20, 1936 WILLIE LUCILE JAMES, 14 months old baby girl of Mr. and Ms. W. M. JAMES, died suddenly, March 14, 1936 at the James home west of Waurika. Interment was in the Waurika cemetery Sunday afternoon. Mrs. J. T. STASEY One of the pioneers, Mrs. JOHN T. STASEY, died Sunday night. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the family home, conducted by Rev. W.A. ROACH of the Presbyterian Church and Rev. C. M. BALL of the Hastings Methodist Church. Interment was at the Waurika cemetery. ANNIE ROBINSON was born in east Texas September 1, 1858. When a young girl, she united with the Methodist Church South. She was married twice, her first husband being CHARLES CRAVEN to whom she wed Dec. 7 1877 at Whitesboro, Texas. Three sons were born to their union, only one ELMER CRAVEN survives. After Mr. Craven's death, she married JOHN T. STASEY in 1886; he died in 1930. In addition to caring for her own family, she assisted in rearing four children of a deceased sister and also a brother's son, SAMMIE ROBINSON, who attended the funeral. Town Topics Mrs. D. E. ACKERMAN was called to Garden City, Kansas last week by the illness and death of her only brother, GEORGE HAZZARD. Funeral services were held Tuesday. Mr. Hazzard's death leaves Mrs. Ackerman along as far as immediate family. Mr. Ackerman and their daughter ELSIE both passed away years ago. Friends of Mr. and Mrs. B. G. RALSTON will be glad to know he is making progress toward getting well at the home of his mother in Waxahachie, Texas. He had three blood transfusions. Mrs. MARSHALL SAMPLES and children drove to Nocona, Texas for her sister, Mrs. E. E. COPELAND, and daughter ANNA MAE who were guests there. Then they visited W. A. SAMPLES and family at Ringling. Mrs. HAZEL LANG and daughter BETTY JO, and Mrs. RUTH WILKINSON and her small son BARRY of Walters visited Mrs. Lang's son, MELVON LANG and family. Mr. and Mrs. LONZO BRANDON were guests of their daughter Mrs. EFFIE PRUITT. Mrs. ELSIE MCDANIELS was taken to a Gainesville hospital for an operation. Mrs. ANNA JONES returned to her home at Wilson; ROY PRUITT and family accompanied her home. She is the daughter of Mrs. ELIZA WALDRUM and a member of the Terral school faculty for nine years. Mr. Simpson spent his boyhood here, son of Mrs. LILIE ASH KEITH of Granbury, Texas. Friday, March 27, 1936 L. C. QUINSEY A true pioneer, L. C. QUINSEY, died at the family home in Waurika, March 20, 1936. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Church of Christ, conducted by Elder HARDY E. BAUGH. Interment was in Waurika. L. C. QUINSEY, son of MOSES and JAYE QUINSEY, was born in North Michigan, January 6, 1869. He came from a line of pioneers, four generations back his maternal forbears having come from Ireland. While a child he moved with his parents to settlements in Nebraska and Colorado where he grew up. About 1890 he drifted to Ardmore, then a town of tents. Here he met and married Miss SUE A. THACKER., who survives him. They were the parents of 11 children, six of whom are living: E. R. QUINSEY, Mrs. CLYDE EDWARDS, Mrs. E. H. RUTLEDGE, EDWARD QUINSEY, all of Waurika; Mrs. ROY BANNISTER of Oklahoma City, and Mrs. E. L. WATSON of Monument, New Mexico, the latter two were unable to attend the funeral, Mrs. Watson returned home after being here. .Since their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Quinsey had lived in this vicinity for many years, except for nine years they spent in New Mexico. They returned a year ago when his health was failing. He joined the Church of Christ in 910. Mrs. JOE OSBORNE Mrs. JOE OSBORNE of Oklahoma City passed away in the St. Anthony Hospital Sunday after an attack of flu. Funeral services were held at Oklahoma City Monday with interment there. Surviving family members are Mr. Osborne, daughter Mrs. MARJORIE PULLEY and her son ERNIE JOE, and Mrs. Osborne's mother, Mrs. KESSLER, all of the home address, 1924 NW 40. Mrs. Osborne was a gracious, talented woman, a reader, a thinker, a writer, and a musician of unusual ability, also one of the best secretaries and all round business woman.. EMILY OSBORNE, who cared for her aged mother, an invalid for years, then opened her home to her aunt, Mrs. FRED BOSZHARDT, of this city, until Mrs. Boszhardt's death. The Osbornes lived in Waurika for a number years, later moving to Oklahoma City. In a letter written by MARJORIE to Mrs. MAUDE LEMONS, she enclosed a poem written by her mother (printed in the obit). A card from AL. L. HAYNES requests his paper be sent to Estherville, Iowa where he will be storekeeper for the Rock Island. The Haynes family left here about a year ago for Dalhart, Texas after living here a number of years. Miss MARY JANE HAYNES will visit relatives at Terrell, Texas until the family is settled in Iowa then will join them. Town Topics Mrs. R. M. SIMMONS and daughter Miss BETTY of Sweetwater, Texas and Mrs. R. L. NEWLAND of Frederick were here briefly, coming for their sister and aunt, Mrs. J. S. MIZE, all going to Oklahoma City to visit Mrs. A. C. FITSCHEN for few days. This is the first anniversary of the death of Miss MATTIE BROADUS, their sister. Mr. and Mrs. M. C. GROSECLOSE drove to Stillwater to get acquainted with the new baby boy at the HERMAN GROSECLOSE home. The baby arrived Saturday, named JAMES EADS, and welcomed by his sister PHOEBE ANN who was a year old this weekend. Mrs. J. O. LEONARD RAY visited his sister Mrs. LENA STRICKLAND and family at Hastings. Mrs. WILLIE RAY was a guest of Grandma THOMAS. Funeral services for Mrs. LETHA HALL were conducted at the Baptist Church Friday afternoon by Rev. SMITH of Marlow. Interment was in the Bourland cemetery. W. ELLIS and Miss ESTELLE PLUMMER of Purcell. Rev. J. J. WARD, who with his wife is believed to be the oldest white resident of Stephens County, will start on a new era of ministry. He preached his first sermon a half century ago near Loco. He was ordained in March 1886. Pioneer Banker of Ryan Dies after Long Illness M. H. BARRETT, Sr. known as RASH BARRETT, president of the People's Bank and Trust Co. of Ryan, one of the largest land owners in the county and one of the most prominent citizens of the state, died Thursday, March 26, after an illness of several weeks. The funeral was Sunday afternoon at the Tabernacle at Ryan, probably the largest crowd ever assembled at a funeral in the country. The services were conducted by Rev. M. F. SULLIVAN of Coalgate, former pastor of the Methodist Church at Ryan, and Mrs. CASSIE BROWN. The 32nd degree Mason funeral service was conducted. (two column obit) Mrs. DALLAS CARTER Mrs. DALLAS CARTER passed away at the family home southeast of Waurika where Mr. and Mrs. Carter made their home this year. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Baptist Church in Hastings, conducted by Rev. G. LYLE SMITH of the Waurika Christian Church. OPHIA WILKINS, daughter of Mrs. CHARLES FULTON, who lives northwest of Waurika, was born October 28, 1910 in Texas. She came here after nearly grown, and married DALLAS CARTER Nov. 4, 1928. To them was born a daughter WANDA FAYE, now five years old, who with her father and Mrs. Fulton, survived of the immediate family. Last week.Last week Mrs. Carter gave birth to a baby son, was born dead.. CLAUD BEAVERS CLAUD BEAVERS, prominent farmer of the Claypool community and member of the school board there, died early Wednesday morning, April 1, at the Waurika hospital, from pneumonia. Mr. Beavers was born August 20, 1904. He is survived by his widow, two children, a boy 10 and a girl 6, his mother Mrs. FRED HOEHN, who lives north of Waurika. Mrs. Beavers is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. JOE MYERS, formerly of here, now at Nocona, Texas. Funeral services were conducted from the Baptist Church in Waurika Thursday, by Mrs. S. E. DICKEY. The body was taken to Nocona for interment. Mrs. J. M. STEWART Mrs. J. M. STEWART died Sunday. Funeral services were held at Terral Tuesday at the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. W. S. LEE, Rev. J. L. JONES and Rev. J. O. WHITWORTH. Interment was in the Terral cemetery. JOSEPHINE BEAVERS, the baby daughter of C. A. and OMA BEAVERS, was born at the ranch home in the E.B. ranch community April 1, 1912. In May 1918 a baby boy, CHARLES to be known as PETE, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Beavers, then two days after his birth, Mrs. Beavers died. The other four children were left to the care of their father and oldest sister, MABEL, now Mrs. ROY CASSADY. JOSEPHINE "JO" attended the country school on the E. B. ranch, then, for high school, she was sent to Edmond, graduated then got her degree from East Central college in 1931. During 1931-32 she taught school at Claypool.In 1932, she became acquainted with J. M. STEWART and they married, lived at Terral. They were the parents of a baby daughter, PATRICIA, who will be three years old in August. Other members of Jo's immediate family are: her father, four sisters and one brother, MABEL, now Mrs. ROY CASSADY of Waurika, EULA now Mrs. JOE BRAZINA; GRACE, now Mrs. AUBRA LEAVELL, RUTH, now Mrs. GEORGE PURTLE and PETE, all of Addington. Town and Country Prof. and Mrs. D.E. PHILLIPS were called to El Reno where his brother SPRUCE PHILLIPS was seriously ill. Then word came from Prof. Phillips' sister< Mrs. ANNA CLARK at Tucson, Arizona, had died. Mr. and Mrs. CHARLES BOYDSTON / BOYDSTUN of Wilmington, California, arrived to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. BOYDSTON at Hastings, when Charles was stricken with appendicitis and taken to Waurika hospital. Prof. CARLOS MONTANDON, music teacher at Hastings high school, brought his high school male quartet to Waurika where they sang at the Baptist revival. Mrs. C. H. GAINES, Mrs. J. S. MIZE, Mrs. H. W. LEMONS, Mrs. J. L. VORTREES, and Mrs. W. T. F. BUSH attended the funeral service of M. H. BARRETT at Ryan then visited Mrs. B. L.
