R. WEATHERBY Mrs. J. R. Weatherby of the community southwest of Waurika died Thursday morning of this week, after an illness of almost a year, an invalid. She came with her husband to Jefferson County from Texas in 1996 and had resided here since that time. Mrs. Weatherby was 79 years of age and is survived by her husband; two sons, ROLLA of Waurika and C. R. of St. Louis, Missouri; and two daughters, Mrs. N. L. DYER and Mrs. J. G. PORTERFIELD of this county. Joint Birthday at Oscar Honoring their daughter Miss DORIS BEGLEY and son GRANT EASTIN on their 15th birthdays, Mesdames BILL BEGLEY and J. J. EASTIN entertained at the latter's home Thursday evening June 12. Guests were JEWEL DYE, PAULINE DYE, ELDON ROBERSON, JACK RITCHIE, RACHEL PURVIS, TOM DYE, IRENE DYE, LORENE DYE, BLANCHE SPOON, KENNETH HOSLER, R. F. BENTON, FRED SHEPPARD, IMOGENE REED, LEONARD BERTRAM, HAZEL BERTRAM, BILL, KENNETH and DON BEGLEY, MAXINE EASTIN, JUNE HUFF of Maud, FLOY LEBEAU, ANNA LOU STEWART, and CHRISTINE DUNFORD of Grady, JUNION, RUTH and RETA BEGLEY of Nocona. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. ALLEN CALVARY and son GENE; Mr. and Mrs. HENRY BERTRAM, Mr. and Mrs. LERO VAN WARMER, Mr. and Mrs. DYKE BEGLEY and children EMILY and LYNN of Nocona. Drunks Slug City Marshal B. L. TAYLOR, city marshal at Temple, was injured when he was slugged by ROBBIE CLEMENTS who was drunk. Taylor was seized by WILLIAM POWELL then Clements got hold of him. Taylor was taken in a car to the home of deputy marshal BERT MCDONALD in Temple and dumped out. Clements is in jail and Powell still not apprehended. Reunion Mr. and Mrs. P. B. TURNER of the Claypool area were happy over the weekend when all their children, spouses, and grandchildren were at home, except for H. L. BAUCOM and daughter of Barnsdall. The guests included son, GLENN and family, daughter Mrs. H. L. BAUCOM of Barnsdall, Mr. and Mrs. CLAUDE TRIPP and Mr. and Mrs. J. D. HANNA and children. Miss BEATRICE KING was 15 years old Tuesday and it was celebrated with a dinner given by Mrs. M. C. GROSECLOSE. IRA DOLLAR had a birthday surprise Monday. His mother Mrs. J. H. DOLLAR and sister IMA JEAN had a surprise dinner for his birthday. Lewis-Johnston Miss GERTRUDE LEWIS and HENRY JOHNSTON, both of Waurika, were married at the home of Mr. and Mrs. JAMES LEWIS, brother of the bride in Oilton. Rev. C. A. BOSTON of the First Baptist Church read the services. ..(several paragraphs).. Mrs. Johnston received her A.B. degree at Southeaster Teachers College in Durant and majored in home economics at C.I.A. at Denton, Texas, and Greeley, Colorado. She was a successful teacher at Healdton, then Ryan, then Waurika. Mrs. Johnston will teach at the Waurika school next term. Mr. Johnston is from Stephenville, Texas where he attended college. He is with Marathon Oil Co. To compliment Mrs. FINIS BLAY of Hastings, her mother and sister, Mrs. J. F. GUTHRIDGE and Miss ETHEL DEE, gave a variety shower. Mrs. S. B. MCCULLOCH Mrs. S. B. MCCULLOCH succumbed suddenly to a heart attack at Chickasha. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Brown Funeral Home in Chickasha with interment in the city cemetery. .MARY ELLEN MOSER was born at Batesville, Arkansas December 7, 1867 and grew to young womanhood there where she married S. B. MCCULLOCH on Dec. 27, 1885. To them were born six children: RAY of Waurika, HEARL of Ponca City, STANLEY of Los Angeles, Mrs. J. W. TOOMER of Anadarko, Mrs. JEFF DAVIS of Rush Springs and Mrs. J. F. REAGON. (She is survived by her husband, children and 15 grandchildren.) Mrs. McCulloch joined the Presbyterian Church early in life then united with the Christian Church with her husband and their children were raised in this church. They came to Oklahoma at the opening of the Cherokee Strip in 1890, living in Chickasha several months, moving to a farm near Waurika, then lived in Waurika in 1903, moving to Chickasha in 1917. July 3 or 10, 1936 (date smudged) MARY BURGESS Through an oversight, the death of Mrs. MARY BURGESS, 51, one of the city's most highly respected colored women, which occurred June 19, was not reported last week. She died after an illness of long duration during which time she was nursed by FANNIE TAYLOR and other colored women who are never forgetful of those of their people who are ill or in trouble. As a coincidence, Fannie carried for Mary as she was dying and stayed through the first night after death, little knowing that in Amarillo, Texas, friends were performing the same sad office for her daughter, MARGUERITE TAYLOR GIBSON, who was killed there that night. Mary's funeral was held Sunday afternoon and interment was in the Waurika cemetery. She is survived by her daughter, ODESSA HARDEMAN, a son LEON BURGESS, and granddaughter OTA MAE BURGESS, seven years old, whom Mary has reared. Mary, to whom life had been an unceasing struggle in the past few years against ill health, poverty and other woes, had well filled herown particular niche in life and was good and faithful in small things now may she find peace and well being in the new life. J. T. PRINCE >From Roswell, New Mexico, was the message that J. T. PRINCE, who had left here Thursday morning to visit relatives there, had died suddenly that afternoon. The body was returned here Sunday and funeral services were held at the Church of Christ here Monday afternoon, conducted by pastor, Elder HARDY BAUGH, with interment in city cemetery beside his beloved wife who preceded him in death by a few months. JOSEPH THOMAS PRINCE was born March 29, 1873 in Whitesboro, Texas. He moved with his parents to Montague where he grew to manhood and married Miss LURENA HENDRICKS, Jan. 26, 1893. Married in youth, they spent 43 years together. .They were the parents of four children, one son dying in infancy, the surviving children are J. T. PRINCE and Mrs. RUBY PRINCE LAIRD of Waurika and A. C. PRINCE of Los Angeles, Calif. There are five grandchildren, VIRGINIA MAE, MELBA and MONA RAE PRINCE, and RITA and JOANNE LAIRD. There are a brother S. E. PRINCE and a sister Mrs. E. BOOTH of this community, another sister Mrs. MINNIE LANDRUTH of Hill County, Texas and a half brother H. S. ELEY of Redlands, California. Mr. Prince is another of the pioneers who have crossed life's border line recently. When 17 years old he became an employee of the Matador Land and Cattle Co. and spent three years on the plains between Matador and Roswell, New Mexico, living in a half-dugout for a year by himself, riding range and keeping the company's cattle as nearly intact as possible. He knew all the trails up and down the Peas river. This summer, without his wife, he developed a longing to go back over those trails and persuaded his son, J. W. and family, to make the trip with him. Their destination, the Flying H Ranch owned by A. C. HENDRICK, brother-in-law of Mr. Prince, is 25 miles across with 20,000 sheep and 6,000 cattle. Here all the old ranch customs are observed. The Princes left last Thursday, driving to Roswell in a day. They were welcomed by Mr. Hendrick, age 84, then Mr. Prince was suddenly gone. . The Prince family came to Jefferson County in 1895. Town Topics Mr. and Mrs. WAYNE DUNN and three boys returned from Trenton and Brownsville, Tennessee where they visited his sisters and other relatives. His niece Miss FRANCES MOORE accompanied them here and will visit her uncle BILL MOORE, Rock Island agent at El Reno. ROY VICKERS of Menard, Texas arrived to visit his sister, Mrs. A. G. COLLINS and family. Roy was the first of the brothers and sisters in the JOHN T. VICKERS to arrive for a family reunion to be held at the Collins ranch. It will be the first time the children have been all together since the death of their mother 24 years ago. G. P. FAIR and family, residing on the JOE WOOD'S farm, were called to Gainesville, Texas where his brother LUM FAIR was seriously injured in a car accident. CHICKEN and FANNIE TAYLOR, colored, of this city, mourn the death of their youngest daughter MARGUERITE TAYLOR GIBSON, who was killed June 19 at Amarillo, Texas. They have had many letters and cards of condolences and sympathy from her friends in Amarillo and El Reno where she had lived. Mr. and Mrs. J. T. CAPEHART, daughter Mrs. WINFIELD DAVIS, Mr. Davis, and JIMMIE MATTHEWS of this city, Mrs. R. O. BROWN and brother OTIS CAPEHART of Oklahoma City were called to Georgetown, Texas where Mrs. Capehart's mother was killed in an car accident. July 10, 1936 Reunion A family reunion, first in 24 years, was held by members of the JOHN T. VICKERS family at the ranch home of Mrs. A. C. COLLINS. Guests were Mrs. BOYD KIMMEL and sister, Mrs. EARL HOLCOMBE, Mr. Holcombe and baby of Fort Worth, Mr. and Mrs. BILL VICKERS of Gotebo, ROY VICKERS of Menard, Texas, Mr. and Mrs. DON VICKERS of Anadarko, Mr. and Mrs. JOHN VICKERS and baby of Oklahoma City. Reunion The G. M. BENTON family enjoyed a reunion at Turner Falls, a surprise arranged for Mr. and Mrs. ELMER BENTON and daughter BETTYE JAYNE of Ardmore. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. BENTON and daughters JULIA and BILLIE RUTH, Mr. and Mrs. ERNEST FORSYTHE and family, Mr. and Mrs. BEELER RODEN and son BOBBY CARL, Mr. and Mrs. ELMER BENTON and daughter Bettye Jayne. A nephew GLENN WHEELER of Temple attended. Tarwater-Jackson Mrs. OLA TARWATER and J.M. JACKSON, both of Duncan, were married in the office of the pastor, Rev. ROY HURST, attended by immediate family members. They are both active in the First Baptist Church of Duncan. She taught in Duncan schools for the past nine years, also principal of the junior high. He is in oil business with the Jackson Oil Co. Mrs. ELIZABETH BOUFFARD Mrs. ELIZABETH BOUFFARD was killed in an automobile accident at Georgetown, Texas when returning from town to her home seven miles northwest of town, being driven by her grandson EMIL BOUFFARD.Funeral services were held from the Friedrich Funeral Home Tuesday by Rev. KENNETH POPE with interment at Georgetown. ELIZABETH ISCHY was born in Bern, Switzerland Nov. 5, 1854. At age of 16 she was confirmed in the Lutheran church of Switzerland, a faithful member for many years. She married LOUIS BOUFFARD Feb. 26 1878 in Bern and to them were born three children: HENRY BOUFFARD and Mrs. A. C. TRENTHARDT of Georgetown and Mrs. J. T. CAPEHART of Waurika. In 1885 Mr. Bouffard died, leaving her with three children to rear. Five years later, she brought the family to Georgetown where her father, FREDERICK ISCHY, lived. She bought a farm on North Gabriel River. She is survived by her three children, 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren. E. R. POLLOCK E. R. Pollock, who lived on East F Street, died suddenly from a stroke. Funeral services were held Wednesday evening at the chapel, conducted by Rev. J. O. WHITWORTH, the family's pastor, and interment in the city cemetery. ELISHA ROBINSON POLLOCK was born November 19, 1884 at Cedar Hill, Texas, son of J. J. and MARTHA POLLOCK. The family moved to Sardis, Texas where he was educated in the Sardis school. On January 14, 1912 he married Miss SELMA JOYCE STINSON at Midlothian, Texas and to them were born four children; CLANCY in college at Stillwater, DUAINE employed at Dallas, INEZ who is a student in training at a hospital in Pasadena, Calif., and AARON, the family baby who is nine years old and at home with is mother. The Pollock family came to Oklahoma in 1917 and to Waurika in 1923. Mr. Pollock joined the Methodist church when he was 25 years old. He had not been well for several months. A sister Mrs. M. R. BARNES of Waco, Texas and a brother O. A. POLLOCK of Holdenville came for the funeral. EDNA MAE WOODS GILL Death came to EDNA MAE WOODS GILL, one of Waurika's well respected colored young women, at her home Thursday morning after an illness of six weeks due to a stomach ailment. She was the daughter of ALEX WOODS, her mother dying several years ago. She was 30 years old January 5, 1936 and is survived by her husband MANN GILL, two children; her father, two sisters LULU and JOE WILLIE, and a brother O. D. WOOD. Funeral services were held Thursday and interment was in the Waurika cemetery, by the side of her mother. She had been employed as a cook in many Waurika homes where she had made many friends. Cornish Gleanings by W. C. HOGAN The young people gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. ARTHUR ELLIS in honor of Miss LOIS LACY who will move to Amarillo, Texas. Grady News Miss LIBBIE YATES and WEBSTER ROBERTS surprised the community Saturday when they motored to Waurika and were joined in wedlock. July 17, 1936 M. S. JETER Owner of Bible Printed in 1828 M. S. JETER of Waurika Route 2 brought to the News office an old Bible printed in 1828. The book was handed down to Mr. Jeter by his grandfather, MELVILLE JETER of Montgomery, Alabama, who moved to East Texas. There are a number of pages in the middle to enter family records. . The Bible also contains two other documents, one is copy of the minutes of he Little Hope Primitive Baptist Association held at Panola County, Texas in 1878 and the other is a copy of a patriotic address by Rev. JOSHUA LAWRENCE, a pioneer Baptist preacher at the old church in Tarboro, North Carolina July 4, 1830. A Message from a Former Resident A letter from E. J. HORTON, many years a resident of Fleetwood community, now in Fillmore, California, where he continues his same business, breeding chickens. N. JONES Mr. and Mrs. FRED WEBB and Mr. and Mrs. LUCIEN MERSHON and children were called to Walters last Wednesday to attend the funeral of NATHANIEL JONES, 87 year old citizen. The services were held at the First Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. W. W. ANDERSON, pastor of the Walters Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. J. T. JONES of the Baptist Church. One of the pioneer merchants of Walters, Mr. Jones located "under the hill" when the town was known as McKnight. He was born in Dyersburg, Tennessee July 20, 1848. He left Tennessee when a young man for Arkansas. Except for 12 years abroad, he lived in Arkansas until the opening of this section of Oklahoma where he has resided since 1901. In November 1907, he married Miss MARY E. DUNN of Waurika, who survives him. He became interested in several real enterprises including real estate and oil. BURK DAVIS BURK DAVIS, pioneer resident of Jefferson County, died at his home in the Beam community northeast of Waurika Saturday, July 11, following a lingering illness. He suffered from a stroke of paralysis. Funeral services were conducted at Addington Sunday afternoon by Rev. F. A. HILL Baptist pastor at Waurika, and interment was in Addington cemetery. He was born in Arkansas in 1865 and was 71 years old. He moved to the eastern Oklahoma then moved to Jefferson County 25 years ago. He is survived by his wife and seven children: JOHN DAVIS of Agawam, Okla., Mrs. LILLIE MARTIN of Beeville, Texas, Mrs. RUBY GILLILAND of Aubrey, Texas, Mrs. N. D. PLANT, V. Z. DAVIS, LEWIS DAVIS and JOE DAVIS, all of the Beam community. F. L. DAVIS F. L. DAVIS, 80 years old, whose home was in Ardmore, died Tuesday morning in the home of his son, C. H. DAVIS of Waurika after an illness of two weeks. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the chapel and were conducted by Rev. RALPH A. HILL, pastor of the First Baptist Church here, with interment in city cemetery. Relatives here for the funeral were J. R. MOCK of Oklahoma City, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. RICHARDSON of Chickasha, Mr. and Mrs. BEN OWENS, Mrs. RUBY WALL and Mr. and Mrs. HERBERT CHAPMAN of Ardmore. Mrs. MRYTLE HUFF STOWE Mrs. MRYTLE HUFF STOWE died suddenly of a heart attack Thursday afternoon. It leaves her aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. HUFF, quite along in the world, their only other daughter MARY died 12 years ago. The body was brought to Waurika and funeral services were held at the chapel by Rev. J. O. WHITWORTH. MRYTLE LEE HUFF was born in Hardy County, Kentucky September 7, 1890. At age of 12, she moved with her parents to Oklahoma City. In 1907 she was joined in marriage with HOMER KING and then a son HOMER LEE KING was born, who with his aged grandparents, and Mrs. Stowe's niece, MARY JAUNE CURTIS, mourn her passing. She joined the Methodist Church in 1912. Town Topics Mr. and Mrs. TOMMIE RYALS and his brother LEE RYALS of Waurika joined Hastings relatives in a trip to Montague, Texas to celebrate the 91st birthday of Grandma Ryals. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. SINGLETON, Mr. and Mrs. CLAUD SINGLETON, and family, and Mrs. LEWIS FOSTER went to Sayre to attend the funeral of Mrs. Singleton's only brother, CHARLES MCAMUS, age 70. Mr. McAmus was also the brother of Mrs. A. K. THOMPSON who with Mrs. Singleton are the only survivors of their father's family now. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson and sons EARL and OTHO attended the funeral. Mr. and Mrs. JOHN GILBERT and son ERNEST, who have in Owensville and other Kentucky points since last October, returned to live here. Cornish L. L. STOCKTON LOUIS LAFAYETTE STOCKTON died suddenly last Wednesday at his home in Cornish. He had been in poor health. Funeral and burial were in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Rev. C. CUMBIE(?) of Ringling officiated. Mr. Stockton was born n Van Buren, Arkansas July 18, 1872 and was 63 years old. He moved to Cornish in 1921 with his eight motherless children, his wife dying in 1920. They are: ROY STOCKTON of South Center Point, ELLIOTT, CLYDE, FRANK, and BESSIE STOCKTON of Cornish, LEE and JESSE STOCKTON of Oak Grove community, and MASHALL / MARSHALL of Ringling. A brother E. H. STOCKTON also survives. Mr. Stockton never complained or bothered anyone with his trouble and had more friends and neighbors here than anyone. Seven son, one daughter, and nine grandchildren, and his brother have the sympathy of the community. Texas Items Mr. and Mrs. J. C. JONES and his mother, Mrs. CHARLES JONES, of Olney, Texas, cousins of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. CASSADY, spent Sunday in the Cassady home.
