All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== Surnames: Originally posted at: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.oklahoma.counties.jefferson/1219/mb.ashx Waurika News Democrat Waurika, Jefferson County, Oklahoma August 7, 1936 THOMAS JEFFERSON PRUITT Thomas Jefferson Pruitt, born August 25, 1868 in Mississippi, died early Monday morning at the home of his son EARL PRUITT in the Courtney Flat community, his final illness due largely to old age and a heart attack. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Hastings arbor and were conducted by Rev. W. D. BOLTON of Waurika. Interment was in the Hastings cemetery by the side of loved ones. Mr. Pruitt came with his parents to Upshur, Texas when he was a year old and grew to manhood there. Here he was married to Miss ELLEN LEWIS, to whom six children were born, only two sons, J. S. PRUITT of Wilson and HUBERT of Mangum, survive. In 1886 Mrs. Pruitt died in Brown County, Texas. Three years later he married Miss ADA DUFFY in Camp County, Texas and they were the parents of nine children, six of whom survive: Mrs. WILLIE RAY, JESSE, EARL, ROY, and ALVOUS of Courtney Flat, and Mrs. JUNIA MULLINS of Oklahoma City. A daughter Mrs. CLARA ROBINSON died at Spur, Texas April 15, 1936; ERNEST PRUITT died at the family home north of Waurika in 1927. The surviving children were all in attendance at their father's funerals. There are also three brothers and a sister living: JESSE and RUBE PRUITT of Pittsburg, Texas and Mrs. MARY TAYLOR of Fort Worth, all of whom attended the funeral. The other brother BILLY PRUITT of Wood County, Texas was unable to be here. Mr. Pruitt had been a resident of Jefferson County for 34 years and the family is an old and respected one. For 40 years, Mr. Pruitt was a member of the Baptist Church, his life consistent with its teachings. Since the death of Mrs. Pruitt, he managed his home, with the assistance of his children until about three months ago when he went to live with various member of his family, spending some time in each of their homes. Town Topics Mrs. L. A. BORDNER left for El Reno to visit before going to Lawrence, Kansas which will be her home. Mr. and Mrs. BORDNER will leave for Colorado Springs for a month's honeymoon. Mrs. R. B. ETTER went to Okeene to visit her daughter, Mrs. BYRON GORDONIERRE and family. She will join Dr. and Mrs. GORDONIERRE and little daughter PATTY on a trip to the Yellowstone National Park. Mr. and Mrs. O. M. BRANSON, who lived on a farm south of Waurika for a number of years but who spent two years at Randlett to be near their children, have moved back and are at 614 East C. Cornish Gleanings by W. C. HOGAN Durham-Hamilton VICTOR HAMILTON and Miss AZLE MAE DURHAM of Ryan were married Tuesday evening in vows read in the home of the bride by Rev. T. A. FOWLER. The popular couple left for a honeymoon in south Texas. A farewell dinner was given in the J. L. MORRIS home in Cornish in honor of the daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. S. N. BAILEY, who are moving to Burkburnett, Texas. Mr. Bailey is employed by Magnolia Petroleum Co. Mrs. MORGAN HOLDER Mrs. Morgan Holder of Ada passed away Wednesday, July 29 in the Waurika hospital, where she had been a patient for only a few days. Funeral services were held Thursday in the Baptist Church in Ringling, conducted by Rev. C. BIGBIE and attended by a large crowd. She was laid to rest in the Ringling hospital beside her father, ANDY HARWELL, who had preceded her in death four years. FRANKIE JEAN HARLOW / HARWELL, youngest daughter of Mrs. ANDY HARWELL, was born in Ringling September 15, 1918 and was 17 years old. She grew to young womanhood and attended the Ringling schools. On June 8, 1936, she married MORGAN HOLDER of Healdton and had made her home in Ada. Frankie Jean joined the Baptist Church six years ago and had been faithful to its teachings. She is survived by her husband, widowed mother, a brother HUGH HARWELL of Okmulgee and seven sisters, Mrs. H. B. TORBETT of Okmulgee, Mrs. BRUCE HILL of Pampa, Texas, Mrs. GEORGE FOLSOM and Miss ALMA HARWELL of Ringling, Mrs. BROWN DURRETT of Dallas and Mrs. ROBERT JOSEPH of Waukomis. Her death has been a shock to her family and friends. Hastings by Mrs. EARL STEPHENS Calloway-Ellis Two very popular young people, J. O. ELLIS of this community and Miss VIVIAN CALLOWAY of Addington, were married Wednesday of last week. They are at home in Oklahoma City where he has a position with a radio firm. Mrs. MAUD E. PLASTER The Hastings community was saddened Saturday by news that Mrs. MAUD E. PLASTER, a pioneer in the Southwest, had died in an Oklahoma City hospital. Funeral services were held Sunday at the tabernacle and were conducted by Elder CLAUDE CLEVENGER of the Church of Christ at Hastings. Interment was in the family lot at Hastings. Mrs. PLASTER was born in Montgomery, Missouri, July 15, 1874. She is supervised by four sons, HARRY of Gibbsland, Louisiana, ROY and JOHN of Ada, and JESSE of Minco; a brother ED MCCONNELL of Davis and three sisters, Mrs. ORA RHINEHART of Elmore City, Mrs. ELLA CAPPENBARGER of Davis and Mrs. FLORENCE STEPHENS of Ada. All relatives were at the funeral. Other relatives attending were JACK PLASTER, a nephew and his wife of Oklahoma City; Miss BESSIE STEPHENS, a niece of Ada. Out of town friends were: Mr. and Mrs. HARRY LORD, Mrs. HOWELL and ALTON JOHNSON of Oklahoma City, Mrs. JESSE HODGES of Comanche, Mrs. W. I. BELCHER, Miss MILDRED HODGES, Mr. and Mrs. GEDDY SMITH, Mr. and Mrs. WILIS SMITH, and EDGAR SMITH, all of Byers, Texas; HOWARD HENDERSON of Norman and Mr. and Mrs. C. F. HOUSE of Walters. August 14, 1936 Cornish Gleanings by W. C. Hogan Mrs. W. S. SCIVALLEY of near Wilson was killed in an auto accident near San Francisco, California, Saturday, where the family were on a vacation trip. Mr. Scivalley is in very serious condition in a San Francisco hospital. The body was shipped to Fort Worth for burial. Mr. and Mrs. JEFF LANGFORD of Rankin, Texas are visiting her mother Mrs. SECK SHAW and Mr. Langford's sister Mrs. D. C. CARPENTER of Cornish. BONNIE MARIE SATTERFIELD of Cornish has gone to McQueen to visit. August 21, 1936 Grady News W. B. BAKER, father of Mrs. ANDY GRIFFIN, is very ill at the home of another daughter, Mrs. LEE DORSETT of Ringling. Mrs. DOCK HOLT gave a birthday party for her daughter RUTH who was 13 years old. DWAYNE WOODS The community was saddened by the death of DWAYNE WOODS, 11 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. QUENTON WOODS. He passed away Sunday morning after a lingering illness. He was laid to rest at the Grady cemetery Sunday afternoon with Rev. BIGBIE of Ringing and Rev. DODSON holding the service. He leaves his parents, four sisters and four brothers. He was a nephew of Mrs. ALLEN GOLDEN and Mrs. FRANK ARMSTRONG. AUSTIN and CULLEN WOODS, Mrs. ETHEL PAYNE and Mrs. OMA LEDBETTER from Paducah, Texas and Mrs. GEORGE TEAGUE from Fort Worth were here for the funeral. BUDDIE MORGAN Funeral services were held at the Grady cemetery Wednesday of last week for BUDDIE MORGAN, World War veteran, and a brother of Mr. JOE REID of this community. BUDDIE passed away in the Ryan hospital following a lingering illness. He made his home with his brother at Healdton. Rev. HOLLINS, pastor of the First Methodist church at Ryan, conducted the service. Buddie was well known here where he was reared to manhood. He was born at Spanish Fort, Texas on May 10, 1894. He leaves to mourn his passing, his father S. R. MORGAN of Healdton, three sisters Mrs. HEX PUGH of Muskogee, Mrs. JOE REID of Grady, Miss BESSIE MORGAN of Dallas, Texas; two brothers ROY MORGAN of Healdton and JACK MORGAN of Ringling, and a host of friends. RUFUS STALLINGS RUFUS STALLINGS, age 34 years, prominent farmer and ranchman in the Asphaltum community, died in a hospital at Oklahoma City Sunday night, August 16. His death was unexpected. He had been in apparent good health and had gone to Norman to take charge of a filling station for the Sinclair Company. He was suddenly taken ill and rushed to the hospital at Oklahoma City, but died soon after reaching there. He was a son of LEE STALLINGS of Asphaltum. He is survived by his parents, his widow and five children. Funeral services were conducted at Asphaltum Tuesday afternoon by Rev. MCDOWELL, a pioneer Baptist minister. Interment was made in the cemetery at Loco with burial services in charge of the Masonic lodge. Mr. and Mrs. ED HOLZENKAMP of Waurika attended her cousin's funeral. Waurika Gets First Bale Last Thursday The first bale of the 1936 cotton crop was ginned here last Thursday. R. F. WILLIAMS, a negro on the SIMS farm northwest of town, raised the cotton. He brought in 1970 pounds and got a 478 pound bale. He was the premium of free ginning and $20. J. A BENNET of northeast of town brought in the second bale. August 28, 1936 Cousins Born Four Hours Apart At the MAPLES reunion at Sugden last week, there were two new additions, ANNA MAE MAPLES, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. MAPLES of Sugden, and DON MAPLES BECKHAM, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. BECKHAM, nee Miss ORETA MAPLES of Archer City, Texas. They are cousins. TOM FRANK Mrs. O. E. HARLIN'S brother, TOM FRANK, died at Dallas, Texas. From the Dallas Dispatch: Tom Frank, 75, known to every fisherman in Dallas, died at his home near White Rock spillway Saturday. He had suffered from a heart attack. Frank had been a resident of the White Rock neighborhood for 50 years after coming here from Kentucky. He was well known politically and had hoped to see his only child BUCK FRANK elected to political office before he died. Frank had lived on the site of White Rock and saw the dam built there, making the city reservoir 35 years ago. He operated a drink stand there for years and put the first boats on the lake. .His son BUCK FRANK was a machine gunner during the war and took part in major engagements. His mother was VIRGINIA RUPARD, daughter of WILLIAM RUPARD, and relatives the family here number about 900. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. VIRGINIA FRANK, one brother W. A. FRANK of Portland, Oregon, three sisters, Mrs. BETTIE ESTES of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. JOE SMITHAM of New Mexico and Mrs. O. E. HARLIN of Waurika, Oklahoma. Mrs. VIRGIL DAVIS Mrs. Virgil Davis died Tuesday morning. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at the Christian Church in Waurika and will be conducted by Rev. G. LYLE SMITH, pastor, and assisted by Rev. W. D. BOLTON, a close neighbor of the Davis family. Interment will be in the Waurika cemetery. CATHRINE HENDRIX, only daughter of JOHN and ELIZABETH HENDRIX, was born in Boonesville, Missouri July 27, 1872. She grew to young womanhood there and was united in marriage to VIRGIL DAVIS in 1889. To them were born three children, ALETHA, Mrs. E. B. SNYDER of Edmond, ROMIE M. of Dallas and EUNICE, Mrs. EARL PRUET of Muskogee. Mrs. Davis joined the Christian Church at New Franklin, Missouri in early womanhood. She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, three children, and eight adored grandchildren, KATHRYN ANN and ROMIE DAVIS Jr., E. B Jr., JANICE and ELEANOR SNYDER, GENE, MARY KATHRYN, and SARA ANN PRUET; three brothers at Boonesville. Cornish Gleanings by W. C. Hogan Double Wedding A double wedding ceremony was performed Wednesday of last week when Rev. C. BIGBIE united the lives of FOREST TAYLOR and Miss MOLLIE STUART and CARL MCKINNN and Miss PEARL LEE STEWART, all of Wilson. Another obit for J. R. STALLINGS gives this information: RUFUS, son of Mr. and Mrs. LEE STALLINGS, was born on a ranch in Major County and at age of 13, moved with his family to Jefferson County where his father started the Stallings ranch.
