H. PEALOR W. L. HILL had a message last week that FULLER HILL of Dallas had passed away. MARTHA and GORDON ABADEAR of Detroit, Michigan are visiting the CEPHUS home. Hastings Items by Mrs. EARL W. STEPHENS Miss BILLIE JOSEPH left for her home at Elk City. She will enter the University next week to work on her master's degree. Mr. and Mrs. CLEMENT WANSON moved to Deer Creek. They will be in school at Edmond this summer. Rev. and Mrs. O. TROY THOMAS drove to Custer City to get their daughter IMOGENE who will visit with them then she will go to Weatherford to work on her master's degree this summer. Miss RUTH CRAVEN will attend school at Edmond this summer. Mr. and Mrs. R. L. WILLIAMSON visited relatives at Holliser. Mrs. C. J. RODDAM and children went to Bristow to be with her mother who is sick. Students arriving home last week were: HARLAN OWENS, CHARLES CARVEN and Miss MAGDALENA CLEMENTS from Stillwater; JACK TAYLOR from Tulsa University; LAROYD BENSON from Connor's College at Warner. Miss GRACE JOHNSON will attend school at Edmond this summer then return to her school at Atlee. Mr. and Mrs. JACK HADDOCK and daughter VIRGINIA LEE and Mr. and Mrs. WHITE drove to Clemscott to attend the funeral of Mr. Haddock's aunt, Mrs. CLEM BROOKS. Miss CYLVANIA DENNIS went to visit her brother and family at Hollister before attending the University at Norman this summer. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. BOYDSTUN and daughters GENEVA, MILDRED, IRENE, and EMMA GENE drove to Oklahoma where the two older girls will go to school. Miss Geneva will enter the teacher college at Edmond and Miss Mildred will enter Draughon's Business college in Oklahoma City. Miss PATSY ALLEN of Temple visited her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. PORTER. Mr. and Mrs. ARCH MCCLARTY had as guests, his mother and sister from Randlett and brother, GEORGE MCCLARTY and wife of Burkburnett and his sister, Mrs. PRICE and Mr. Price of Temple. They came to attend the commencement of their grandson and nephew, CALVIN MCCARTY. The JOE BROOKS family visited his parents, the C. M. BROOKS. Mr. and Mrs. JOE BROOKS will enter school at Edmond. Mr. and Mrs. GUY FITZGERALD tried their fishing luck at the new lakes in the Wichitas. Mr. and Mrs. ALVIN THOMPSON and daughter MARY ELLEN of Irving were guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. K. THOMPSON. Mr. and Mrs. H. G. VALEAU and daughter CHARLOTTE ANN and Mr. and Mrs. LEO PRYOR went to the Quanah Parker Lake where they met Rev. and Mrs. G. F. GLOSSUP of Chattanooga. Friends will be glad to learn that REUBEN BOWERS who suffered a stroke of paralysis is improving. Mr. and Mrs. HOMER EDWARDS and children, Mr. and Mrs. DAN ALLEN of Temple visited Mrs. Edwards' parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. THOMPSON. Mr. and Mrs. LUTHER FITZGERALD and son of Comanche visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. FITZGERALD. Busy Bee Club Members of the Busy Bee club were guests of Mrs. ARCH MCCLARTY. Mrs. FERN BARBER, a former member, rejoined. Mrs. EARL R. DAVIS entertained members. Shower Mrs. LAVERNE FOSTER was the honoree of a stork shower at the home of Mrs. J. W. WALLACE Monday. Mrs. JACK HADDOCK and Mrs. LEE RYALS of Electra, Texas were co-hostesses. Obituary GUY H. MATHER was born October 7, 1883 at Greenwood, Nebraska and died May 23, 1938 at age of 54 years, in a Walters hospital from a ruptured appendix. In 1902 he moved to Hastings, Oklahoma where he made his home. On January 26, 1913, he was united in marriage with Miss MATTIE LEONA JONES. To this union three children were born, one died in infancy. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. MATTIE MATHER, and two daughters Mrs. CARL PRICE and LUCILLE who is at home, a grandson, a sister, Mrs. HELEN E. JONES and a brother, J. L. MATHER of Moore, Oklahoma. Guy was one of Hastings' pioneers, coming here while a youth and Hastings was just being built. He made a host of friends, when he maintained the highway between Hastings and Waurika for many years. Late in life, he united with the Baptist church. Rev. T. F. GLOSSUP was called to assist Rev. TRUITT SHERIFF conduct the funeral services held at the Baptist church Monday afternoon, followed by interment at Hastings cemetery. Friday, June 10, 1938 Cornish Gleanings by W. C. HOGAN J.T. ROACH and Miss QUITA TRIPP, both of the East Mountain Home community, came to Ringling Wednesday of last week and were united in the holy bonds of matrimony in the presence of relatives and friends as witnesses. Rev. O. E. HILL officiated. Mrs. ESTELLA MOORE of Ringling had a major operation at Ardmore last week. Mrs. CECIL LOCKWOOD of the South Center Point community was taken to an Ardmore hospital for a major operation. Mr. and Mrs. R. V. UNDERWOOD and children and LUELLA visited Mrs. Underwood's parents, Mr. and Mrs. CHARLEY EVANS and other relatives at the Boggy Swamp community. Mr. and Mrs. JOHN GONZOLES and daughter PAULINE of Atlee visited their mother, Mrs. MARTHA KIETH and other relatives at Cornish. Mr. and Mrs. SAM PERKINS and children of Healdton visited their mother, Mrs. EMMA UNDERWOOD and other relatives at Cornish. L. B. HODGES and A. C. SWINNEY subscribed for the paper. M. E. Mrs. TOMMIE HUGHES returned from visiting her sister at Sentinel. The M.B.C. club held a meeting with Mrs. LOIS STANGER last Thursday and quilted. The ladies will meet with Mrs. MARY RAMSEY this week. Obit THOMAS DILLARD GOLDSMITH, a pioneer of this county, died at his home near Terral Tuesday of last week and was interred in the Cornish I.O.O.F. cemetery the following day. He was nearing his 77th birthday and had spent about half of his life in the Atlee and Cornish communities. The surviving members of the immediate family are his wife, three sons and four daughters: ELMER GOLDSMITH of Cooper, Texas; CLYDE GOLDSMITH of Amarillo, Texas; ELZA GOLDSMITH of Ringling; Mrs. ALMA KEETON of Lubbock, Texas; Mrs. LIZZIE BRANNUM of Terral; Mrs. BULA AUTREY of East Mountain Home, and Mrs. BULAH WRIGHT of Atlee. Two brothers also survive: MARION GOLDSMITH of Belle, Tennessee and WILLIE GOLDSMITH of Olney, Texas. All his children and one brother attended the funeral which was held at the cemetery by Rev. O. E. HILL of the Zaneis Methodist church. Obit H. F. LOCKWOOD died at his home in the East Claypool community Wednesday of last week and was buried in the Cornish I.O.O.F cemetery the following day. Rev. CHARLES MANN conducted the services. Mr. Lockwood had been in poor health for some time. He was stricken with paralysis six months ago and never fully recovered. He was well and favorably known. Mr. Lockwood became a Christian in early life and lived consistently through to his death. He is survived by his widow and four children, ROBERT and GLENN LOCKWOOD of Orr, Mrs. HELEN LOWERY of the Union Hill community and Mrs. ANN GRAVELY of Waurika; one sister Mrs. SUZIE WIGHAM of South Center Point; two brothers, JOE LOCKWOOD of Wilson and WAYNE LOCKWOOD of Corona, California..All attended his funeral except his brother Wayne. Ryan News by Miss SYLVIA BROWN R. E. WELTY had business at Duncan. Mrs. T. B. SMITH left for Artesia, New Mexico where her mother, Mrs. MARTIN, is very ill. Mrs. ROBERT ARMSTRONG and small son ROBERT CLARK of Jacksonville, Texas visited parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. B. SMITH and Mr. and Mrs. R. C. ARMSTRONG and other relatives here. LOUIS STEGER, long time photographer of Ryan, is remodeling his studio, changing it into an apartment. Mr. Steger plans to retire. THOMAS KUYKER was ill. Miss FAY NELL MILLER is attending the university at Norman. Mrs. R. C. ARMSTRONG is suffering from rheumatism. Mrs. LEWIS YOUNG was dismissed from the Ryan hospital and returned home to Duncan. Mr. and Mrs. ED WORRELL went to Oklahoma City to take their sister Mrs. FLOYD DAVIS and her baby GERALDINE to see a baby specialist. LEWIS YOUNG of Duncan was here. Mr. and Mrs. FRED GRAYSON and daughters Misses LOUISE and MARIAN IGAZ of San Francisco, California arrived to visit his cousin, OTTO BOUND then they will visit ARLEIGH GRAYSON and family east of Ryan. The FRED GRAYSONS are on vacation. The JIM DODD residence in southeast Ryan is undergoing some inside improvements. Mr. and Mrs. RILEY KENNEDY of New Mexico are visiting his brother J. R. KENNEDY and family. Miss RUTH CHAFFIN of Ryan presented some of her pupils in a musical recital at her home. Mr. and Mrs. WILMER SEAY, SUE CARROL, and Mr. and Mrs. WAYNE SEAY and CLARA BETH were in Wichita Falls to attend a dance recital at the Knickerbocker studios when both girls had a part in the program. A son was born recently to Mr. and Mrs. JOE KIRBY nee Miss PAULINE VICKERS at Albonnac, Michigan. R. F. GODBEY and daughter MARJORIE were guests of Mr. and Mrs. JACK SHILLINGS at Waurika. Mr. and Mrs. FREEMON HILBERT of Oklahoma City visited her sister, Mrs. L. R. LOVELADY. GEORGE WILLIAMS Jr. returned from attending school at Tyler, Texas. A family picnic was enjoyed last week at Ryan by Mr. and Mrs. RAYMOND MILLER, her brother, JUNIOR KENNEDY of Healdton, and Miss WANDA MCCORKER and Miss ADELL MILLER. Visiting in Duncan were Mesdames CLAUD THORPE, CHARLIE DODD and Rev. W. S. DABNEY. JOHN HENSLEY of Jacksboro, Texas visited his sister Mrs. G. J. KEITH. Mrs. HATTIE ROBISON of Tulsa visited her niece Mrs. A. J. PHAGANS. Mrs. JOHNNIE WEBB of Wichita Falls visited relatives here. Mrs. OSCAR NESMITH and brother OTIS PHAGANS of Ryan were at Chickasha. E. J. SHIELDS was surprised when three of his sisters, Mrs. HARROLD CONNER of Wichita, Kansas, Mrs. WEST IRVIN and Mrs. CLYDE STANTON of Marlow arrived to visit. LUTHER PORTER, an old timer of this county, now of Archer City, Texas, was here. Mr. and Mrs. L. J. BROWN went to Chickasaw after their daughter JANE who attended O.C.W. Miss OUHIVAKE FAULKNER of Claremore accompanied them to Ryan to visit her sister Mrs. M. H. BARRETT. Mrs. JONES BARRETT is enjoying a visit from her mother Mrs. CARROLLTON of Ringgold. Mr. and Mrs. CHARLIE GRANTHAM and daughter MARY VIRGINIA of Wichita Falls visited relatives here. WILLIAM DABNEY is home from dental college at Kansas City. J. M. SAWYERS and son JAMES REEDER went to Fort Worth to bring home Mrs. Sawyers who had visited her mother there. L. L. WEATHERLY and family and GEORGE THURMAN ODOM of Ryan joined the V. C. JOHNSON family and other friends in Duncan then they went to Turner Falls. The Ryan band went to Nocona to take part in a celebration and annual homecoming. Mesdames L.L.WADE, W. T. ANDY, F. U. GREGSTON and OTTO BOUND furnished the cars. Mrs. JACK NESBIT, nee Miss ALTA REED, of Coronado, Colorado, is visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. S. REED and other relatives. Mrs. LINN WARREN of Cleburne, Texas visited her brother, J. R. KENNEDY and family. Mr. and Mrs. RUSSELL WINTON visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. WINTON of near Henrietta. The J. D. THOMPSON family left on vacation in the Kiamichi Mountains. Mrs. J. H. HUFF of San Angelo, Texas came to visit her son R. L. HUFF and family. LUCIAN PALMER left to attend school at Norman. Mr. and Mrs. C.M. DEAN of Fleetwood were here. Mr. and Mrs. CLAUDE THORPE, GLEN MAJOR and BUSTER DODD attended the rodeo in Ardmore. Mr. and Mrs. GRADY EPPERSON and Dr. and Mrs. A. H. BARTLING of Waurika went fishing at Lake Murray. The B. F. HUFF family visited in Bowie. R. HATCHER'S father is very ill at Hastings. Mr. Hatcher is 89 years old and has been in bad health for some time. SHIRLEY SHORTES, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. SHORTES, was operated on for appendicitis at Wichita Falls. Friday, June 17, 1938 Mrs. ARGABRIGHT Services for Mrs. JOHN ARGABRIGHT, who passed away at her home at Henrietta, Texas June 9, were held the following day at the First Baptist Church in her home town, by the pastor, Rev. E. L. MOODY, assisted by Rev. PAUL J. MERRILL of the Christian Church. Interment was at Bellvue cemetery. Mrs. ARGABRIGHT was born March 11, 1859 in Arkansas. She moved with her parents to Grayson County, Texas when 8 years old. In 1879 she was married to JOHN ARGABRIGHT and in 1882 moved to Vashti, then to Bellvue in 1907 where she lived until 10 years ago when she moved to Henrietta. She had been a member of the Baptist church since girlhood. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. BLAKE POWERS of Henrietta; two sons, R. C. of Henrietta and W. C. of Antelope. There are 22 grandchildren. One of her children died in infancy, and a son LON ARGABRIGHT died three years ago at Ryan where he had lived a number of years. Small Boy Drowns Little BOBBY LEE BURNS, 5 years old son of L. D. BURNS and his divorce wife, Mrs. NELLIE BURNS, formerly of Waurika, was drowned at a cistern at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. ED CLAY northwest of Duncan Tuesday morning of this week. Bobby Lee and his older brother L. D. Jr. were left by Mrs. Clay to play in the yard while she went to the garden. When she returned, she missed Bobby Lee and a search revealed that a rock had been removed from the cistern rim and the boy had fallen in. The child's mother lives in Duncan and the father has made his home at Ryan recently. Leave for California Mr. and Mrs. J. M. DYER and Mr. and Mrs. E. OSTERHAUS left by automobile for San Francisco to attend the Rotary International Convention. Hastings Items by Mrs. EARL W. STEPHENS Mrs. H. H. SKAGGS of Dallas brought her mother-in-law Mrs. T. H.SKAGGS home Wednesday after she had visited in Dallas. Mrs. Skaggs returned home and took her mother Mrs. MART ANTHONY for a month's visit with her. To complement Mrs. J. A. MARLEY who is moving to Ozona, Texas, the Needle Craft club met at the home of Mrs. R. L. THOMPSON. Mr. and Mrs. H. H. JONES, Mr. and Mrs. NOEL NORMAN and Mrs. E. L.WORRELL of Ryan attended the funeral of R. R. HATCHER at Hastings last week. Obit R. R. HATCHER R. R. HATCHER died Wednesday of last week. With his death, Hastings lost another pioneer. He owned and operated a meat market in the early days, later he sold bakery products and was mail messenger for about 20 years. He had the reputation of never missing a train or being late with the mail. He and his wife devoted much of their spare time to the needy and sick until their health failed. Both have been bedridden for the greater part of two years. ROBERT R. HATCHER was born August 25, 1849 in Ohio. On April 8, 1877 he and Miss SUSA MUNRO / MONROE were married. To this union five children were born. They are, in order of the birth, RUFUS C. HATCHER, CORA (Mrs. MCCOLLUM of Beeville, Texas), LELA (Mrs. ABEL of Monahans, Texas), ROBERT MONROE HATCHER of Ryan and ETHA who passed away November 11, 1898. Mr. Hatcher was converted 12 years ago and joined the Baptist church. Funeral services were conducted at the home Tuesday afternoon by Rev. TRUITT SHERIFF of the Baptist church. Interment was at Hastings cemetery. Death Mrs. TOM ROSS, who died at the Waurika cemetery Monday morning following a major operation, was buried last Tuesday at the Hastings cemetery by the side of a little daughter. Funeral services were conducted at the Church of Christ Monday afternoon. Riverview Mr. and Mrs. BUCK STONE, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. BERRY and Mrs. EVIE STONE went to Frederick to attend the funeral of R. M. WITT, who was well known here, and the father of Mrs. CARL STONE. Mrs. BEATRICE GILLESPIE was the guest of Misses MIDDIE and FAYE STANLEY. Mr. and Mrs. ALVIN OWEN, and daughter BLANCHE, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. BRALY, Miss LOIS WINTON, and ARLINE FROST were Sunday guests of the MILLER KING family. Mr. and Mrs. OLLIE GUINN and son returned to California after visiting relatives here. OLIVER KING returned from California. Mr. and Mrs. GARNET KENDRICK were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. MARK BRIDGES. WILKES KING returned with his daughter Mrs. COY PACE after she visited relatives here. Mr. and Mrs. ROY KING, Mrs. WILKES KING, Mr. and Mrs. EMMET LOKEY, Mr. and Mrs. RAYMER QUALLS, Mr. and Mrs. ROY KEELE and Misses PAULINE and JEAN PORTERFIELD were missed in their Sunday school classes. Friday, June 24, 1938 Local BILLIE JEAN BEAVERS visited her brother OLIN BEAVERS and family at Ada then returned home where she also had fallen on a barbed wire and required ten stitches in her leg. Uncle BILL DIVERS came home from Salina, Kansas where he visited his daughter Mrs. JOE BREDENGERD and family. The Bredengerds are the parents of five boys, two graduated from high school and the youngest is 6. Mr. and Mrs. TRUMAN WALDRON moved back to Great Bend, Kansas after moving to Wichita Falls several weeks ago. Mr. and Mrs. P. W. DENNEY are having a time with carbuncles, he had one and she had three. Mrs. EARL HOLCOMBE, nee Miss THELMA VICKERS, of Fort Worth and Mrs. HOWARD CAIN of this city spent three years at the Academy of Mary the Immaculate at Wichita Falls when they were both girls. They enjoyed a visit at the Cain home. Mrs. Holcombe and the children spent two weeks with her sister Mrs. A. G. COLLINS and family at the ranch home. Mr. and Mrs. H. P. SAMPLES returned to Healdton after a week in Colorado. Mrs. SAMPLES and ALTA CAROLYN visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. E. HEACOCK. Grady News Miss MAUDIE ENGLISH of Oklahoma City visited her aunt Mrs. OLAN REILLY and other relatives here. Mrs. BERT ROBINSON and children and MATTIE JO and DWAYNE STEWART were dinner guests of the LLOYD SAPPINGTON family. MAXINE RICH is ill. Mr. and Mrs. LEON GAMBLE, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. SULLIVAN Jr. of Union Valley were supper guests of the N. T. DUNFORD home. Mr. and Mrs. ROY TRIPP visited the TOBE RICH family. Miss DELLA GOLDEN was a guest of Mr. and Mrs. BRUCE GRIFFIN and daughter RETHA. Mrs. LLOYD SAPPINGTON gave party for her son BILLY FRANK'S 7th birthday. Obit DAVID CROXTON DAVID CROXTON died in a hospital at Hereford, Texas last Friday. His death was caused by a horse falling on him Thursday evening while rounding up cattle on a ranch near Dawn, Texas where he had been working for his friend, DOYCE GRIFFITH. JAMES DAVID CROXTON was born at Nocona, Texas September 27, 1908 and would have been 30 years old his next birthday. He was brought back to Roosevelt to his brother RAY'S home and the funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon and laid to rest at the Roosevelt cemetery. His father, two brothers and a sister preceded him in death. He leaves his mother, Mrs. JIM CROXTON of Tulare, California, five brothers, SCOTT, CHELTA, VEECH, ORAN and RAY. Oran and Ray were the only brothers able to attend the funeral. Since his relatives moved away several years ago, David made his home much of the time with the ZED STEWART and DUNFORD families. WILLIS STONE MATTHEWS Thursday of last week, the body of WILLIS STONE MATTHEWS, father of Mrs. MARSHALL SAMPLES, was taken to the old cemetery at Pontotoc and laid to rest by the side of a daughter, MARY ELIZABETH, who had preceded him in death by several years. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. FRED TUCKER, pastor of the Tishomingo Methodist church with FOREST ARMSTRONG reading the obituary. Mrs. W. D. BODENHAMER of this city sang "Jesus Savior Pilot Me." WILLIS STONE MATTHEWS was born March 27, 1863 at Patriot, Perry County, Tennessee, a son of GRANVILLE and ELIZABETH MATTHEWS. They moved to Texas when he was a small boy and settled at Paris. On June 13, 1888, Mr. Matthews was united in marriage with KITTY JANE BOATRIGHT at Gainesville, Texas and their golden wedding anniversary was celebrated last winter. Mr. and Mrs. Matthews came to Oklahoma in 1890 and settled at Tishomingo where they had a confectionary and café, later moved to Pontotoc where he carried the mail and farmed for two years. Then the family moved to Loco in 1923 where he carried the mail for two years, and from there they went to Ada where he have service as mail messenger for three years. At the end of that time, he developed a bad heart ailment and dropsy and for the past eight years he has been almost an invalid, cared for tenderly, patiently by his devoted wife. Mr. and Mrs. Matthews have been living at Tishomingo and a few weeks ago, they were here for a visit.. Mr. and Mrs. MATTHEWS were the parents of sic children, three of whom died before their father, two infants and daughter Mary Elizabeth who was grown at the time of her passing. There are two daughters, Mrs. SAMPLES, the baby of the family, and Mrs. J. F. COMPTON of Ada, and one son, W. A. S. MATTHEWS of Oklahoma City. There are 12 grandchildren, and a sister Mrs. LAURA HOLLAND of Fort Worth. All the children and grandchildren attended the funeral, and a nephew, HUBERT HOLLAND of Fort Worth, also attended. Friday, July 8, 1938 LUCY CAPPS WILSON LUCY COLLIER CAPPS was born May 1, 1887 near Liberty, Missouri. It was here that she lived until moving with her family, Mr. and Mrs. E.T. CAPPS and EDWARD, her only brother, who preceded her in death, to Waurika, Oklahoma in 1906. She taught school at Waurika for a few years. October 13, 1908 she was united in marriage with L. E. WILSON who survives here. Before going to Britton, Oklahoma to establish the present Wilson home, they lived in Arkansas and in Dallas, Texas. Mrs. Wilson united with the Christian church when she was 16 years. At the time of her passing, she was Sunday school class teacher and an active worker in the Britton P.TA. She died at St. Anthony's hospital in Oklahoma City after having been a patient there one week. The funeral services were held at the Christian church in Britton last Saturday afternoon and interment was at Memorial Park cemetery. Mrs. Wilson is survived by her eight children, JENNIE, BESSIE, RUBY, MINNIE JEAN, NORA MAY, W. E., L. E. Jr. and JOE ALLEN. She is also survived by her mother Mrs. ANNA CAPPS and one grandson. Mrs. LOUESTA CAPPS and JOYCE, LOY STOUT and WILEY WILSON from Wilson attended the funeral. Mr. and Mrs. JOE BALLARD, JOE PORTER of Norman, and HARDIN BALLARD of Oklahoma City also attended. JOE BALLARD is an uncle of Mrs. Wilson.
