Emma Walker Coates

Emma Walker Coates, 90, of Amarillo, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Memory Gardens Cemetery. 
Arrangements are by N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors.

Ms. Coates was born in the New Mexico Territory. She married John Coates 
Jr. in 1939 in Waurika, Okla. She received her bachelor's degree at 
Central State University in Edmond, Okla. She moved to Amarillo in 1953. 
She received her master's degree from West Texas State University. She was 
a teacher for the Amarillo Independent School District for more than 30 
years. She taught at South Lawn and Will Rogers elementary schools. She 
retired in 1970 and moved to Dallas the same year. She was a member of the 
First Baptist Church in Amarillo before moving to Dallas.

Survivors include a daughter, Martha Bailey of Richardson; a son, John 
Coates III of Dallas; and four grandchildren.
